Comedian Colbert joins race for White House
By Howard Kurtz
Washington Post
Article Launched: 10/17/2007 01:33:10 AM PDT

WASHINGTON - It has become something of a cliche: politicians launching their electoral campaigns on late-night talk shows, in a calculated attempt at hipness.

But a late-night comic announcing his presidential candidacy on a late-night talk show - now that is a hall-of-mirrors maneuver worthy of Stephen Colbert. The man known to viewers for his portrayal of a fulminating right-wing blowhard said on Comedy Central on Tuesday night that he will be a candidate in his native South Carolina.

Asked if he plans to give up his show, Colbert said: "Do you think I'm a fool? Now that I'm a candidate, you people are going to be gunning for me, like you do for everybody." Not only will the program enable him to bite back at the press, he pointed out, but "you know what it pays to be a presidential candidate? Not well."

As for the inconvenient truth that he hasn't lived in the Palmetto State for years, the host of "The Colbert Report" went negative, daring the other candidates to match his appeal back home: "John Edwards left South Carolina when he was 1 year old. He had his chance. Saying his parents moved him - that's the easy answer."

Colbert told Jon Stewart on "The Daily Show" that he planned to announce soon on a more prestigious program - and minutes later, on his own show, said he was taking the plunge, triggering a big balloon drop.

Colbert, who in real life is a Democrat, said he would file papers to run in both parties' primaries.

He seems to have an unorthodox fundraising strategy: "I'd really like to get some corporate sponsorship. Some sort of salty snack."

Yeah, I watched this last night. Hilarious.

Didn't Robin Williams make a movie like this?

I personally think he's probably not running in ALL the primaries because he's seriously concerned he'd be a Ross Perot to the Dems. That's just what I'd be thinking.

Me too, I think "eclipsed" is a bit... dramatic. In my opinion it would be like saying David Letterman's public profile eclipsed Johnny Carson's after he got his own show. Honestly.

It would be Stewart playing the straight man, and Colbert flying off the handle.

"And don't think you're off the hook, voters, you're the ones who made this bed. Now you're the ones who are going to have to move over so a gay couple can sleep in it. Tomorrow you're all going to wake up in a brave new world, a world where the Constitution gets trampled by an army of terrorist clones, created in a stem-cell research lab run by homosexual doctors who sterilize their instruments over burning American flags. Where tax-and-spend Democrats take all your hard-earned money and use it to buy electric cars for National Public Radio, and teach evolution to illegal immigrants. Oh, and everybody's high! You know what, I've had it! You people don't deserve a Republican majority! I quit!"

That was pretty much one of the best clips from television, ever.

I still laugh my ass off when I see it. Best quotes:

"How old are you...? And you wear a bow-tie."

"You're... partisan.. um.. hacks."

"You're on CNN-- the show that leads into ME is puppets making prank phone calls!"

"Noo I'm not going to be your monkey."

"You're as big a dick on your show as on any other show."

I don't think he could seriously run because of his TV show. (As far as I know) He can't have his own 'personal forum' while the other candidates do not, specifically one that he is paid to have.

Nah, he actually explained that on his show. He can run, as long as he doesn't use his show to campaign.

On his show, he explained, though, that he could choose to exclusively cover his campaign as "news", and then editorialize it. It was actually awesomely humorous.

Not de facto, no. It all depends on how he uses the show. Rush Limbaugh could technically run for President and still have his radio show.

All candidates, to some degree, have a pulpit within which to speak, already. For example, Bill Richardson is Governor of NM, he can campaign all he wants, but he cannot use his office as Governor to promote that campaign. That's why a person's political staff can't be on their campaign staff. I know someone who works in Hillary's Senate office, and I tried to use her as a connection to get a job on the campaign, and she explained very clearly to me that she had nothing to do with the campaign, and couldn't help me in any way.

COLUMBIA, South Carolina (CNN) — The South Carolina Democratic Party voted Thursday to keep comedian Stephen Colbert's name off the Democratic Primary ballot, according to Executive Director Joe Werner.

This essentially means that Colbert’s short lived White House run in the Palmetto State will come to an end, because he has said that he would not try to be placed on the Republican Party primary ballot.

And according to polls that would put him with 13% of US citizens, which is far better then the current 0% he is polling at.

I personally do not believe in alien ships visiting earth to anally probe white trash and disect cows, but people believe in stranger things, I suppose ("angels" giving golden tablets filled with stories of visits by the sons of deities to the USA comes to mind) .

What bothered me most about the whole Kucinich/UFO debate fiasco was not the fact that he said he saw one, but that he did it so badly. He had weeks since Shirley MacClaine's book exposed the "UFO incident", and his campaign obviously had not prepared him for the question?

Not presidential.

I would prefer a president that can prepare, knows they should be prepared, and that has advisors and a staff to help them do so.

Yea.. I never understood why people who say they saw a UFO are considered wackos.. but people who believe an alien entity came to this area of the cosmos, made the planet Earth and created all life on it are considered 'normal'.
