TheEschaton
10-13-2007, 11:41 PM
Cal got it on their 6 with 86 seconds left on the clock. Drove all the way to the 12, had first down with 12 seconds left.
They tried to go for the win, the redshirt freshman QB, in for their starter, was flushed out of the pocket, ran it up the middle, and got tackled....time ran out, OSU wins.
Edit: This is when they could have just kicked it on first down from the 19 (for a 29 yard field goal) for the tie to send it to OT).

I prefer college sports to professional ... but when it comes to football it makes my eyes bleed.
It's understandable when an undefeated team isn't declared the champion because they didn't have any competition, but consistently ranked undefeated teams getting passed over by a team with 1-2 losses is a joke.
Put in a post season and let's have some play-offs.

Makkah
10-14-2007, 01:32 AM
Yea... hate to say it, playoffs will never come. It seems like an awesome idea to move each bowl to a certain playoff game, but moving collegiate athletes to 4+ extra games just makes the NCAA cringe with injury possibilities and, yea, money loss.
Solkern

Without playoffs, makes the regular season mean much much much more, then any other sport with a playoff, as you could possibly play "sub par" and still win the championship

I disagree that money would be lost with a playoff system
Solkern
10-14-2007, 02:07 AM
The BCS has a TV deal through 2009 and the Rose Bowl has one through 2013, so we will probably have to wait until at least then. I do not think we will see one until the non-BCS bowls start to dry up and go away. I am not talking about bowls like the New Orleans Bowl or the Las Vegas Bowl, but more like the Capital One (formerly Citrus) or Outback bowls. Right now, there is no incentive for the big schools to create one. They get just about all their bowl-eligible teams into postseason football. There is not a playoff format that will put eight SEC teams (for example) into the postseason.
Also, right now, they have this big pile of money from the BCS that they share among themselves. If there is a playoff, the pile of money might be bigger, but the wealth would get shared more evenly. Why would the big schools go for that?
There are several economic and political challenges to creating a playoff besides the one I just mentioned. The biggest political roadblock is that university presidents do not want one. Since the presidents run the NCAA, it is going to be a pretty hard sell to get one going. There has been no indication that the presidents are softening on this issue.
I think it is more likely that we will go back to the old system, where the Big Ten and Pac 10 champions played in the Rose Bowl no matter what, than see the creation of any sort of true playoff
Why a college football playoff wouldn't work
Would gut, if not destroy, the traditional bowl system, which allows 56 teams almost half those in NCAA Division I-A to stamp their seasons a success by reaching the postseason.
Could diminish interest in the regular season. College football's is the most meaningful and drama-filled in sports. With no playoff and only two teams qualifying for a final shot at the national championship, there is so little margin for error that every game from late August to early December is vital.
The college game would become even more commercialized and professionalized.
A 16-team, four-round playoff would be during many final exams and extend the season into the second semester. Players would be harder-pressed to be students.

Exactly, it's incredibly simple. This results in a total of 3 more games than we have now. Two semi's, and one championship. Four teams play one extra game per season. Two teams play 2 extra games.

I'm going to laugh my ass off if USF plays OSU in the title game. It's not like OSU has much chance losing against the joke teams they play for the rest of the season. USF has a pretty good chance of beating who they play. BC's got a tough game this weekened against VT. If they lose that one...I'd say LSU still has a big shot at jumping into the BCS title game.

The problem with the SEC as great as it is. The teams in the conference always play each other at a high level and end up killing the shot at an SEC team winning the title (Yes, I realize Florida won it last year).

I'll concede that OSU had a week schedule, (this was supposed to be a rebuilding year) They've blown out every team they've played. I don't know if they're good enough to run the table but they certainly have a defense good enough to give them a chance.

10-15-2007, 02:41 PM
The Big X is garbage this year. OSU will likely run the table then get taken behind the woodshed by LSU in the NC game. If USF ends up in winning it all, SEC reps will grow a backbone and try to force a playoff or some kind of +1 format in the next few years.

If USF runs the table I'd be VERY impressed. I think OSU can go undefeated simply because they have a good defense and they don't really play anyone. But being #1 nowadays seems like a curse. That being said..OSU vs Michigan can be a game no matter how bad either team is. Look at Auburn vs. Florida..anything can happen.
I know one thing..USF's recruiting team has to be in their glory. Having these young Florida studs seeing this team in a national title hunt definately helps them pull kids towards USF instead of shittyass Miami and maybe even FSU. Good for them. It's nice to see a program come so far in what? 11 years? I'm very impressed.

The Big East teams may match up well against Big X school because of the BIg X's problem with interior speed, but teams in the SEC would DRAG them. If you believe WV, Rutgers, or USF could play Auburn, UF, UGA, LSU, SC, and UT and come out with less than 3 losses, you're crazy as hell.

YEAH! So amped right now! What a great game, Kirby Freeman looked like ass the entire time after he came in for Wright and then he goes 3/3 on REALLY hard passes for the go-ahead, getting his ribs broke in the process. I knew this would be a rebuilding year, I'm totally satisfied now. We beat FSU and we get to look forward to Robert Marve or Jacory Harris at QB next year! It's too bad Marve got hurt and had to redshirt, otherwise we would probably play him the last 2 or 3 games a la Kenny Dorsey.

It was a very obvious dirty block at that. However lots of dirty goes on in football....
Uhm not saying I did this or anything but I've "heard" of lineman taking a shit pre game.... not wiping their asses and dipping into their sweaty ass poop souped crack on occasion and putting the hands into the face/lips of the opposing lineman on the snap.
Just saying that's something I heard once.
No shit.
In HS shit like that happens all the time. Inexperience .... whatever. By the time a person gets to college they develop an understanding that a person's ability to play is finite and such things break an unspoken agreement between any team meeting on the gridiron.
That went beyond a douche move and I hope someday things like this become an ejectable foul.
It reminded me of the Green block on Johnson and me wondering why Johnson was getting shit for his reaction rather than the Texans carting Green off the field in search of a wood chipper.
A cut block is a legal move though, a chop block is not. There are plenty of legal moves in the NFL that can harm someone permanently. Just ask the guy who hit Kevin Everett. I won't condemn Trent Green or Navy for using a completely legal move, but that chop block on Dorsey was grotesquely uncalled for (I didn't see if he got pushed into him, but from the replay I saw it seemed he didn't).

Wild damn finish. BC beats the Hokies 3 times on Thursday. The only team. Big time botched holding call on the last play though.
Yeah def. a hold, no doubt about it, but the refs didn't want to call another one. You gotta put Matt Ryan as the Heisman #1 after that performance, coming back and winning when you have a bad game is the real mark of a great player.
BC still looks pretty awful, but they haven't lost yet so you gotta give 'em that credit.

25 of 52 isn't very Heisman looking. I'll give him credit for the comeback though. VT made some bad defensive calls at the end of that game though. I personally wouldn't have sat in the prevent on the first TD drive like that after what they were doing worked REALLY well all night.
Edited to add: Yeah they're undefeated. They get credit for that. But god was this a piss poor showing for them. If VT had an offense worth mentioning in this game it woulda been a blowout.

Whatever man, that comeback was amazing. And I agree, the sign of a great player is coming back to fucking win it. Did you see him after the second TD? He was puking on the sidelines, that's how quick the adrenaline crashed.

Well of course you're not gonna admit the million blown holds on the left DE of VT. He was dominating 80% of the game, and then he just magically gets stopped (read: held).
Good game, BC deserves to be where they're at (for record alone)... for now. Fortunately, teams like BC and ASU won't last the whole season. Saving grace is that they're gonna be losing so late in the season, they won't get a chance to get back up.
TheEschaton

Errr, combination of the fact that he wasn't "dominating" and was probably tired at the end of the game?
Seriously, he made 2 (as I counted) good plays in the first half, and he was "dominating". Then, another one on the drive before the first TD drive. And then he didn't do anything else.
To be honest, though, I was so giddy and crazed during that last TD drive, I wouldn't have known if he was holding, cause I didn't see most of the drive, I was eyes-closed, praying.
As for us losing late in the season - it was generally accepted that V-tech was our hardest game left. We have FSU, Miami, Clemson, and someone else left now, none of whom have been overly impressive this year.
It's amazing that a homer has problems with the calls against his team. I can't blame you, I would probably punch the referee who called "pass interference" on Glenn Sharpe back in 2002 if I saw him today. Anyway, you guys got terribly lucky with the calls, tons of deserving holds weren't called and your QB was playing great, sometimes that's what it takes. On the other hand I wouldn't look past FSU, UM or Clemson. None are having great years but to discount three programs with that kind of history would be a foolish move. Big programs like those can win anytime any Saturday. If you gave me the choice of playing UTEP or Nebraska I'd take UTEP every time even though Nebraska is the worse team on paper.

It?ll work out in the end.
BC has gotten to the number 2 by proxy ranking and has now shown they deserve a top 5 ranking. Prior to this, they had beaten such national powerhouses as St. Mary?s pre-school for the blind + deaf, Um Ass, and Western Canada Elderly Complex. Now they have a win over a legitimate top 25 team on the road.
Ohio State on the other hand, still hasn?t beaten a single team worth a damn, and does not have a single good challenge on the schedule. The Big 10 is so bad this year it almost defies belief.
The team to beat so far has STILL gotta be LSU, OU, and Oregon.
Then again, I will always be in favor of a team with 1 loss that played 5 or 6 legitimate opponents over a team with no losses who played nobody.
Now, before the comparisons start between the BC win and the LSU win, it?s not really fair to compare the two so directly, due to weather conditions, where it was played, when in the season it was played, etc, but watching the game did make a few things pretty clear to me.
1) BC?s run defense is ranked so high because they haven?t played a single even halfway decent rushing attack.
2) BC?s offensive line is not very good, and a top flight D-line (which VT isn?t), would absolutely blow them off the line of scrimmage.
3) BC?s receivers are slow
4) Matt Ryan is better than he played last night, has much better than expected armstrength, but he can be confused by changing looks in the secondary.
5) BC has a suspect secondary.
6) BC?s linebackers are the heart and soul of the defense, and they are solid tacklers.

How about the last phantom roughing the kicker on the final punt by BC? 15 yards for...nothing? I loved the punter falling over..arching his back...and then grabbing the wrong leg. The only thing he forgot to do was to thank the Academy. You can piss on all the bad calls against BC, there were just as many that went the other way. Thats the problem with being whats commonly called "a fanboy" for your team. It's always this and that happened against us. At least look at the entire picture. Trust me, I know. I did it a lot in the Miami loss to OSU.

Magically stopped? That lineman was magically tackled by two of the BC o-linemen. And yeah, if they do take a loss somewhere in the next few weeks they won't be able to recover. I doubt they'd get a BCS nod anyway..just basing that off of schedule strength. Remember why Florida got in last season.

No I'm looking for the official.. not the media.
Um..
Big East commissioner Mike Tranghese called Louisville athletic director Tom Jurich on Sunday, saying the referees erred during a disputed punt return for the touchdown by the Huskies early in the third quarter.
Tranghese told Jurich the officials had made a "terrible" mistake. Tranghese took action against the referee who missed the call, but wouldn't elaborate on the penalty.

Uhm.. which is the media. I think I've been clear about LOOKING FOR where the NCAA officially releases these statements.
I've never complained about the USF/RUT game so need to get butt hurt. (which you obviously are being defensive.)
If you watched the same game then you should just be happy that you guys stole that game. That wasn't the only bad call. Just the only one that made talk on national television/radio (not in rutgers favor either).
Other than that it was straight up a great game.. hell the call made the game more entertaining. I know you haven't forgotten I'm a fan of RU.
However of the three we're talking about BC/RU/USF ... USF is by far the best team at this point. I don't see how anyone that claims to know about football can argue that.
I'm being defensive because you came and made a claim to suit your argument using the RU/USF game and the officiating but as of yet you've yet to be able to back it up.

OSU, BC and Arizona state are numbers 1, 2 and 4 in the BCS standings and all are undefeated. Let's look at the rest of their games.
The Buckeyes visit No. 25 Penn State on Saturday, then get home dates against Illinois and Wisconsin before traveling to No. 20 Michigan.
All of the Eagles remaining games are against potential bowl teams as they host Florida State next week and Miami at the end of the season, with road trips to Maryland and Clemson in between.
No. 4 Arizona State is hosting No. 21 California before running a gauntlet comprised of No. 5 Oregon and UCLA on the road and No. 12 USC at home before finishing with Arizona.
( I copied and pasted the previous three sentences from an article in the Advocate this morning )
I really don't see any of the three finishing unbeaten, especially Arizona St. and BC.
