I just find it funny how people relate how they don't get tipped for doing their jobs when service-industry people do.
I never got tipped for being shot at for 13+ months...not to mention I have a BSN in nursing which is 2 years more than she put in educationwise and she finds some lame assed excuse for being cheap.
Hell....she obviously gets free health care too...something I pay 200 bucks a month for. Yet I still tip 20-25% on a meal...and up to 50% on a good bar tab.
EESH!!

Who the hell cares....it's about tipping, if you're cheap...you're cheap...for the sake of Christ....she's cheap...she should live with it...I don't give a rat's what you Europeans think.

Tipping isn't really done in Europe. Now if she came to the US and didn't follow our customs of tipping because she doesn't have to back home that's something else. She's not cheap for not tipping where it isn't practiced. I think really her point earlier is that she agrees with a decent wage and no tips since it seems to work fine over there.
GuildRat
05-01-2007, 01:41 PM
It's different in the UK obviously. Waiters get paid minimum wage or more and still get tips, health care is free. This is why I don't tip often. If my patients are gonna start tipping me for setting their IV up (my job that I'm already paid for) then I'll start tipping waiters for serving my food (their job that they're already paid for.)
WOOT!!! minimum wage.....that's what...about 8 pounds per hour of slaving over some snooty Euro-trash? to bring them a meal and a pint?
Nice...remind me to stay right where I am....the good ol US.

Uh... I'd have to be an RN to work as a nurse. There's no way to get a Masters in Nursing without being an RN. It's not related to the type of job I do, it's purely a couple of letters confirming I'm a qualified nurse, registered with the Nursing Council. Perhaps it works differently in the US.

An associates in janitorial services? Seems so.
If you want to label a pre-med program as a degree in custodial arts ... so be it. Thought it's kind of moot since I decided against furthering my degree.
It's sufficient enough that I had to padd my already existing classes with non-credit courses through the hospital's nursing program for four months before I could start earning credit, 8 bucks an hour toward tuition, and 3 bucks an hour toward my pocket while taking on 3 12 hour shifts a week doing the same work RNs do.
You're a fucking idiot if you think an RN, or any level or nursing, is nothing more than IVs and intubation.
In my humble experience....women tend to be cheaper in the tipping department than men do.In your experience as a server/bartdender men tipped you better than women? Heh, very interesting.
If this doesn't apply to you, so be it.It doesn't.
Also, it seems that more women work as bartenders and wait-staff in my neck of the woods. My girlfriend used to bartend so I'm well aware of how men and women tip based on a number of different factors. Women tipping cheaper is not something she experienced very often.

You don't feel you should have to tip them. That's a few bucks you would save yourself everytime you went out to eat, no?No, I feel they should get paid like real people (i.e. more than $2 an hour) so they don't have to rely on this bizarre and pointless system. There's no net change, which means prices aren't going to go up, they're not going to get less money, etc., etc. This has been said at least three thousand and fifty-six times, as a very conservative estimate.
And if they decide to make every customer service job with no benefits to be lower wages with tips, I wouldn't be opposed to it.Then you're alright.

Where as males tend to be more across the board on the tip. .I can't tell you how many times my girlfriend received big tips from male customers because they thought they'd get her phone number at the end of the night or because she smiled and engaged them the entire time they drank at the bar. Males tend to either over-tip or severely under-tip. Across the board women tip on average 15% regardless of the gender of their server.

This is nonsense. We're already paying them considerably more than minimum wage, it's just done in an archaic, bass-ackwards manner. Your concern that the pay will get any worse or that prices will go up is unsubstantiated in reality. The existence of any good service anywhere in a wage-based regime demonstrates how your service concern is also not a necessary result.
You're trying to compare uncomparable markets. You would have a point if it hasn't been proven time and time again that service declines in the food industry when tips are factored out. (see mandatory gratuities)
Aside from that, way to keep pulling a Latrin ...
I often wonder what it is you see when you read posts. My guess is the Tsa`ah-vision version of this post goes like this:
"I love Jesus and believe everything in the Bible. I wish waiters would just get shot in the face for being Godless heathen, but the next best thing is to pay them about 2 bucks an hour (preferably less). Clearly, I've never left the plexiglass dome my parents constructed for me in the basement."Do you tip farmers when you buy produce in the grocery store?
... and keep pulling.
While I do wish there were a better system, it's not likely to happen due to a number of factors, but all of them can be narrowed down into 2 large factors.
1. Cost of business
We don't have national health care and providing health care as an owner/operator of a small business normally puts you into the red.
2. No one aspires to be a member of any waitstaff.
Comparing the tipping habits of Europeans or Canadians to the tipping habits, or even the industry, in the US is far from what would be considered a good comparison.
And just a side thought here ... how in the fuck are you going to tip the farmer?

I call bullshit....I tip on basis of th service I recieve. Great, so you agree that it would be stupid to say something along these lines "Normal cheap-assed mentality for a female.....nuff said" when most women wo aren't interested in the tits and ass of another women are also going to tip based on the service they receive. Glad we could come to an understanding on that one.
Gender of the waitstaff doesn't matter. You're catching on now.
Men get as good a tip as any woman may and moreso in some instances as they don't seem to rely on the ass and tit as much as women do.
So you tip men more in some instances based on the fact that you don't think they are relying on your lack of tits and ass in giving you quality service? Or in other words, :wtf:
Who the fuck cares if a chick has a sweet ass if your beer or drink is empty every frickin time you turn around? Not me for sure. Some guys do, which is why you calling bullshit on something I don't think you've ever personally experienced is laughable. You either have had your testicles removed, or have some sort of hormone deficiency.
If a woman is obviously playing her ass and tits into the tip factor, they're not getting much more out of me ... however, my wife has stomped on my tipping enough to let me know that just because our server had an incredible ass or a better than average rack does not mean I should tip more.

Don't make me quote how she doesn't get tipped for doing her "job"
Read above...
Jesus....
Your comprehension skills are almost non existent. I've never complained about my job. I love it and I don't expect to be tipped for it. I simply stated that I believe people should be paid for doing their job and I don't give them extra for it.
I used the example of my own job, which is as demanding as a waiters job. You can take it which ever way you like but to say I complain about my job is a huge leap from what I actually implied.

Thankfully we don't live in a society where the lowest level of employment isn't reliant on the generosity of whom is being served. While nurses over here do not get paid what they deserve (it’s about 17-19k right?), it is rather well above the minimum wage.
Personally I only tip in restaurants when the food is excellent, or a takeaway delivery noob is quick and can speak English.

This was an interesting thread once...
...anyway, to sum up:
(1) Would it have killed three young professionals to leave another $20? No, but we decided at the time that 25% on food and $10 for a thirty second wine opening ceremony was okay.
(2) Henceforth, I've decided I'm going to keep my current tipping habits on food (2x the tax to start while I'm in Virginia, since there's a 6% meal tax on top of the 5% sales tax, goes up and down with quality of service).
(3) I'm just going to start leaving a tip equivalent to the corking fee for the rare circumstance where I order good wine, if they can't bother sending us a sommelier and Joe Waiter gets relegated the task instead.

The average meal lasts for...maybe an hour? The average tip is...$10-15? (that's being really generous)
And they wait more than one table at a time. Say its 4 tables.. thats $40-60 an hour.
And if you want to argue about the slow times with no customers... just make sure and get a part time job during peak hours.
Faent
05-01-2007, 11:22 PM
Your tip was inappropriate. The government assumes the server made at least a 15% tip on that meal. Your server was taxed on money the government assumed you gave him. In general, tipping under 15% when the service is good means you are a worthless piece of trash. You are not *required* *under certain conditions* to tip more than 15% if you order expensive bottles of wine, however.
If you have the money to tip more appropriately (and it is likely you do, if you're wasting it on that restaurant bought wine), you do not fall under those conditions. If you simply chose not to tip for the service you received because you're a stingy jackass, don't go back. You're a jackass, the staff knows it, and they will treat you (somehow) like the jackass you are.
Finally, you could have bought the same bottle of wine for $100 at a liquor store. And you could have spent $200 at a liquor store to purchase a bottle of wine that would have sold for $350 - $400 at the restaurant. The restaurant will likely charge you a corkage fee (usually $10 - $20) for bringing in your own bottle, but seriously, you'll be drinking better wine for less money. If you're going to spend that kind of money on wine, wouldn't a better bottle be more appealing?

Interesting sub-topic:
Got a new tat today, and the place actually accepted credit cards (I've only ever done cash before, yanno, for the one other tat I have). I got the card swiped, and I see the little thing which says the total, and underneath it has the "Tip" line....
...what the fuck? Tipping a tattoo artist? I capitulated and gave 10% because the money was gonna be taxed whereas I suppose cash deals aren't taxed, but still.
Are you supposed to tip tattoo artists? Is there a pissed tattoo artist in Buffalo who was angry when I stiffed him on a tip but paid for the thing in cash? Does the money for a tip go straight to the artist, or is a percentage skimmed off the top for running the establishment.
Discuss.

Yeah, always always always tip your inker. I give my guy Greg at least 40-50 bucks for each session. It varies from shop to shop what the artists receive of the overall charge, but Greg takes half of the fee for the session. I've been in a few places where it was 70/30 or 60/40 with the shop taking the larger cut. If you take care of them they'll always take care of you. Greg does a lot of my ink on his days off and I never ever have to wait for an appointment.

Tip if they work well, are quick and you are generally pleased with what is going on. otherwise, not so much.
If this was already posted I apologise. It is from the Emily Post Institute.
RESTAURANTS/BARS
Waiter/waitress: 15% of bill (excl. tax) for adequate service; 20% for very good service; no less than 10% for poor service
Headwaiter/captain: often gets a cut of table server's tip; so tip your server extra to reward captain, or tip captain separately
Sommelier, or wine steward: 15% of cost of the bottle
Bartender: 15% to 20% of the tab, with a minimum of 50 cents per soft drink, $1 per alcoholic drink
Coatroom attendant: $1 per coat
Parking valet or garage attendant: $2 to bring your car to you
Washroom attendant: 50 cents to $1
DAILY LIFE
Taxi driver: Varies depending on locality. Assume 15% will be enough; an extra $1 to $2 for help with bags.
Food delivery person:* 10% of the bill (excl. tax), at least $1 for bills up to $10. Should tip 15%-20% for a difficult delivery.
Grocery loader: Check with store policy if tips are accepted. If so, $1 for bringing bags to car; $1.50 to $3 if you have more than 3 bags.
Barber: 15% to 20%, minimum $1, for a haircut. For other services (shampoo, shave or manicure) tip $1 to $2 to service provider.
Hairdresser: 15% to 20%. (It is now acceptable to tip owner, unless he or she says otherwise.)
Shampoo person: $2
Manicurist: 15%
Spa service (e.g., massage): 15% to 20%. If service is provided by owner, no tip.
Staff at coffee/food retailers with tip jars: No tip required. It's completely optional.
Handyman: No tip
Gas attendant: No tip
* Mike Lynn, associate professor of consumer behavior at the Cornell Hotel School suggests tipping pizza delivery folk a minimum of $2 per pizza. His reasoning: Food delivery can be dangerous if delivering to crime-ridden neighborhoods or driving in bad weather, etc. The Web site www.tipthepizzaguy.com suggests the following: 15% for normal service, with a $2 minimum; 20% for excellent service; 10% or less for poor service; at least 10% for orders of $50 or more. Don't assume a delivery charge, if there is one, goes to the pizza deliverer. Ask the person who takes your order.
TRAVEL
Skycap at airport: $1 per bag if you check-in curbside; $2 per bag if skycap takes bags to check-in counter.
Hotel doorman: $1 per bag for help with luggage; $1 per person for hailing a cab
Hotel bellhop: $1 per bag for bringing luggage to your room (but a $2 minimum if you have just one bag)
Hotel housekeeper: $2 to $5* per night
Hotel concierge: $5 for getting you tickets or reservations ($10-plus if they're hard to get). No tip required when you ask for directions.
Cruise: Varies. Ask cruise line about customary gratuities.

I don't suppose anyone here owns/manages a restaurant?
I would be interested to know what it actually costs to run one, and how much profit they make by not paying waiters minimum wage. Whether they would go under or something if they had to.
I've never owned a restaurant but I've done books for them; from 5 star to greasy spoons. Their margins are very slim and the industry is very competitive. Because of this owners/managers are ALWAYS looking for ways to control costs and increase turnover. This means most wait and kitchen staff are paid as little as possible (to control costs) and pressured to get diners in and out as quickly as possible (to increase turnover). It can be a really crappy job no matter what class of restaurant you work in- but because of tips, a waitress or waiter CAN make a decent living.
