Chirac was also supposed to be pro American. I wouldn't believe it.

And Sarkozy not really the leading candidate. He's the candidate from the leading party, I believe.

OMG I'll be so happy if Segolene Royal wins! A woman AND a socialist. Couldn't really get much better for our neighbors.

Chirac is/was the last Gaullist.

Gaullists are not pro-American. They are French-first in everything.

Sarkozy, who is the leading candidate, is of the same party, but differs politically from Chirac in various ways and expected to be more likely to express/support the American viewpoint in geopolitics (such as France would not had been so "difficult" pre-Iraq).

But............Sarkozy's not going to win.

Edited to add: especially how he reacted to the riots in Paris - the black African community will unite against him at the very least, if not the whole immigrant community.

I have to say, I love Bob, who has yet to leave high school (and possibly Pepperell) has such a strong negative opinion of Royal. :P

I'm a democratic socialist myself, so it's pretty obvious where my hopes lie.

Thats debatable TheE he is already ahead in the polls of likely voters. Maybe the french people have given up on the socialist state?

how much is he ahead? I haven't read the figures lately, but I always heard the majority was not very large. If 51-52% of people are willing to vote for him, I don't think you can say the french have given up their ideology. It would be like saying everyone in America is a conservative because bush got 51% of the vote; personally, I feel it was silly to run a woman in a country that has traditionally been so male oriented. We shall see.

I love how supporting the Iraq War is somehow a litmus test for pro Americanness.
