SAN FRAN MAYOR IN FRESH MEDIA CONTROVERSY
Thurs Apr 5, 2007 15:28:02 ET

San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom, fresh from rehab after being caught in an affair with his former deputy's wife, has caused controversy in San Francisco when he briefly opened his mouth around a local reporter's microphone.

Print, radio and TV reporters at hand for a press conference were 'suprised' and 'amused' when Newsom grabbed the stick and briefly looked to be jokingly performing oral sex.

One local reporter tells the DRUDGE REPORT, "I was surprised he did that. I didn't feel it was appropriate at all."

Prominent local blogger Beth Spotswood (http://bethspotswood.blogspot.com/) immediately wrote, "I think Channel 2 started it when they shoved their microphone so close to Gavin's face that he pretended to blow it."

At ABC7NEWS.com, where the video (http://iteamblog.abc7news.com/2007/04/the_invisible_r.html) can be seen, one commenter wrote, "He's stupid. There's a time and place to joke around, but when you're on camera, you should watch what you say and do if you're an elected official ... Gavin is self-destructing.

Another writes:

"Being a Chicagoan, I am used to many instances of our beloved king Daley brushing reporters questions aside, but this display was incredible. Can't your city do what California did to Gray Davis?"

Developing...

Things must be pretty slow if they're trying to make a story out of this. Especially after watching the video, where he blew the microphone for roughly .25 seconds. They make it sound like he was slobbering all over it and jacking it off or something.

Since when do you go to rehab for sticking a bitch?

Yeah, one could even make the argument he pretend he was going to "eat" the microphone... I prefer to ROFL @ Cincinnati mayor:

Wow.

I think Ray Nagin is still the biggest piece of garbage to rule a city but this guy is funny.

P.S. Marion Barry was funny too.

I have a question: When did "commenters" on "popular blogs" or news websites, become relevent, quotable people with the necessary gravitas to even be considered important enough to put in a report?

Another Drudge Report classic technique.

There's a shocker.

Only an immature person would consider that (pretending to blow a microphone) a rational response to having a microphone shoved in their face.

The precedent is your age.

Actually Spotwood was only stating how she thinks it started. (the microphone blowing).

There was a reporter quoted before that was unnamed that thought it was inappropriate.

And there was a ABC7News commentator who said Mayor Gavin was 'stupid' and that the behavior was not how an elected official should act while on camera.

There's really nothing to agree with concerning Ms. Spotwood's remarks as posted in the written story. However, I do happen to agree with the unnamed reporter that was quoted in the article.

One doesn't have to be young to be immature, but young people tend to be immature. No one said beth Spotswood was 16.....

But I'm both immature and young for saying that I agreed with her, so why is she allowed to have the same views but not be immature or young?

Worst logical argument ever.

Hulkein

You're the one with the logic problems, genius.

She is immature.

You agreeing with an immature person isn't a shocker because you're young.

The end.

Bobmuhthol

If you think she's immature from that one quote you're a pretty big douche bag.

The superend.

Hulkein

I don't know for sure if she is an immature person, but that quote you agreed with is. That's the point.

I should've wrote:

Ahh, so in your agreement [with Ms. Spotwood's account of how the scenario started] you were really saying Gavin is justified in his behavior, or more importantly how its being interpreted.

... Assuming that he was 'at work' as in being interviewed in an official capacity and he let his professionalism slip like that, whether it was an attmept at 'eating' or 'blowing' the microphone; he should have demonstrated more decorum as a response to the microphone's invasion of his facial privacy space. That response, in itself, bespeaks either poor judgement, immaturity, or immature/adolescent humor. None of which belongs in the public speaking portfolio of a public official.

Poor judgment?

The man started marrying homosexual couples on the steps of City Hall despite a CA court ruling he couldn't.

The man isn't known for great judgment.

However, I don't think he was miming blowing the microphone. And I'm guessing the ABC7News reporter to said he was 'stupid' is the same ass who was trying to interview him.

Completely agree with you, I think he was kind of acting like some people would when a kid puts their hand in their face, they act like they're going to bite it, to get the kid to retract.

And I'm guessing the ABC7News reporter to said he was 'stupid' is the same ass who was trying to interview him.

What does that even mean? (edit: oh wait, the to -> who and it makes sense... that one word made the entire sentence look messed up at first glance)

Some of you should stop and really think about what it is you're arguing about. "You're immature because you agree with this person, and I think this person is immature because they said this!"

This thread is only 3 pages long and it's already dumber than the "Liannonuel/Andraste/Ghrim, etc conflict" thread.

For the record though, I agree with Bob, who agrees with Ms. Spotwood, who said "I think Channel 2 started it when they shoved their microphone so close to Gavin's face that he pretended to blow it."

I also agree with Celephais, who said "I think he was kind of acting like some people would when a kid puts their hand in their face, they act like they're going to bite it, to get the kid to retract."

That is all.

So you had no implication of opinion whatsoever of any impropriety or non-impropriety by agreing with Ms. Spotwood's account? You were just agreeing that the reporter simply started the incident by sticking the microphone in Mayor Gavins face?

If thats the case, what is your opinion on his reaction?

<<So you had no implication of opinion whatsoever of any impropriety or non-impropriety by agreing with Ms. Spotwood's account?>>

Pretty much. It's their fault for starting it.

<<If thats the case, what is your opinion on his reaction?>>

My opinion falls more on the reaction of the reporters, and I feel like they care way too much.

No matter how much reporters care, that doesn't change the fact that eating or pretending to blow a microphone is immature/unprofessional.

No matter how unprofessional he was, that doesn't change the fact that there's no need to report about it as if it was breaking news.

I don't disagree with that. That's not what Beth Spotswood said, though.
