Biden = Racist?

I don't see the big deal personally.. and maybe the media is trying to get someone like Biden out of the race early as we all know he has zero chance to get the nomination..

Biden gave an interview to The New York Observer newspaper describing Senator Obama as "the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy."


I don't get it.

Without reading the interview taking a statement out of context like that would come across as offensive because by stating that you're generally saying that you expect all main stream african-americans to be poorly spoken, dumb, dirty, and ugly.

But although I havn't read/heard the interview I'd assume he was refering to african-americans in the political lime light or presidential hopefuls and not your average main stream african-americans.

The furor was about the "clean" thing, as if African Americans were normally in a state of filthiness.

He has since said on the Daily Show (I find it weird that a person would go on the Daily Show to retract a statement and apologize, but maybe he was already scheduled) that he meant to say "fresh", in that he had fresh ideas (Obama).

I guess... I took that as more of a compliment of Obama and not as a slight against anyone. If I were to see a guy, well dressed and clean cut.. able to speak effectively.. I would describe him much the same way. Race really doesn't play a part in it.

But hey.. watching the Dems fight over stupid shit is entertaining.. so let them go at it imo.
