Just when I think it can't get any better, Pelosi names Barbara Lee to the Appropriations Committee. Karl Rove must be pulling her strings.

Barbara Lee Named to House Appropriations Committee
(Washington, DC) – Today, Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-Oakland) was named to the House Appropriations Committee, which controls the federal purse strings and is widely viewed as one of the most powerful committees in Congress.

"I thank Speaker-elect Pelosi and my colleagues for the opportunity to serve on this important committee. I look forward to working with Chairman Obey and my colleagues on the committee to help set the nation's spending priorities and ensure our spending truly reflects our nation's values.

"I also look forward to working with my fellow Californians on the committee to ensure that our state is getting the federal resources it deserves.

"This committee assignment puts me in a better position than ever to continue to fight for and serve the people of California's 9th Congressional District."

Lee will be only one of five California Democrats and three Democrats from Northern California on the Appropriations Committee. Subcommittee positions will be decided in January.

Holy shit! I wonder if she's going to recommend moving DC to the west coast next?!?

Way to go Pelosi!

If you want to be taken seriously ... maybe rethink your choice of a biographical source. You could have thrown up a Fox news link and been laughed at less.

That being said, I really doubt there's going to be much change in the way things are done on capitol hill other than clipping Bush's nuts and cementing the rest of his presidency in the lame duck category.

If this is just a hint of what's to come the next 2 years. I have a feeling the left wing of the PC will become very quiet.

In their defense.. it's not only Democrats that are ignorant on foreign affairs.. there are plenty of ignorant Republicans.

There are plenty of idiots on the Republican side too. Let's try to keep kind of on topic here.

Can you explain why she is bad? I'm afraid I haven't heard of her. In addition, a good discussion on it wouldn't hurt.

I found this little caveat at the bottom of the site page very enlightening:

Found this interesting from the source:

On Patriot Act: "The roving wiretaps allowed in this bill would permit federal agents to eavesdrop on every computer in use in a public or university library," apparently unaware that federal agents still have to present a case to a FISA court for permission.

While that's true on the Patriot Act, there's certainly other situations where the administration has taken it upon themselves to bypass FISA and eavesdrop without any warrants. I would say that she was justified on this score.

Let's face it, Appropriations is the place where anyone appointed is going to do the least damage for the next 6 months. Because the federal budget spending is going to be done under a continuing resolution w/o any earmarks for next year, anyone on Appropriations has been effectively neutered for the 2007 budget. And if earmark reform is done as has been promised, then Appropriations members will not be that powerful as they once were.

I don't know who she is, and I'd really like to know.:P

I actually picked this source with you in mind Tsa'ah, it was worded simple enough for you to understand.

Anyway I think you are right about not much changing for the next two years. I think Bush will keep the government gridlocked and give the democrats enough rope to hang themselves, and McCain will take the White House in '08.

FACTS?

It says Huey Newton is her chief of staff.

Besides being Murdered by the police in the 1970's I don't think that's really possibly.

No, actually it says Huey Newton was the "Minister of Defense" for the Black Panthers. Apparently you are as illiterate as he was.

PB, I want to know what the poster has to say about her without posting a site about them.

Personal opinion, before I go look it up on the internet.;)

I actually really want to know the reasons for the post and the talk about why he doesn't like her.

I dislike the fact that she is one of 4 Californians appointed by Pelosi (who is also from CA) on the appropriations comittee. Granted they still must be voted on by the Democratic Caucaus...

[Corrected from earlier 5 mentioned as sourced by http://democraticleader.house.gov/press/releases.cfm?pressReleaseID=1965 ]

Seems that copy/pasting of that list is causing some havoc with the boards so you'll have to hit the link to see who's appointed. :(

Clearly his opinion of her is bad since he posted the initial thread and then posted a link to a satire of her. Just look at her extreme liberal voting record to start with.

It's not that tough to figure out.

In her defense.. she hasn't 'taken over' yet. I personally can't wait for the first 100 hours of her new reign to see what she accomplishes.

The new min wage is a forgone conclusion.. too many Republicans are scared shitless they will lose their seats if they vote against such a warm fuzzy new law that they will go along with it.

Speaking of minimum wage, I wonder if she's going to give the illegals working at her vineyard a pay raise.

It appears that Pelosi and husband own two vineyards in Napa Valley. The only thing I've been able to uncover about the hiring of illegal aliens to work these vineyards is an accusation by some female radio talk show host in San Francisco. There doesn't seem to be any real proof of this, one way or the other.

The vineyards do hire non-union employees; however, according to California law, they have to. The employees themselves must unionize. The vineyards can't apply to hire only union employees by California law.

It also appears that most of the vineyard workers in the Napa valley are paid very well - more than those in the Sonoma Valley. In fact, a good portion of them are paid more than union workers make according to an ABC investigation into the matter of non-union workers being hired by Pelosi's vineyards, and others in the area.

Found some pretty interesting material with a bit of research. It'll be even more interesting to watch as this story unfolds.

Since when do you need proof in politics? Accusations have been pretty effective for the Democrats so far.

Anyway, thanks for clearing that up. I was just trying to make sure her illegals were being paid enough. Since Democrats are such stand-up individuals, I'm sure she will do the right thing.
