QUITO, Ecuador - A leftist economist who called for Ecuador to cut ties with international lenders appeared to have easily won the presidency of this poor, politically unstable Andean nation, strengthening South America's tilt to the left.

Partial returns from Sunday's voting showed that Rafael Correa — who has worried Washington with calls to limit foreign debt payments — would join left-leaning leaders in Bolivia, Brazil, Argentina, Chile and Venezuela, where he is friends with anti-U.S. President Hugo Chavez.

Their coalition is almost as strong as Montreals now.

It'll be fun to watch whatever little economy they have suffer/collapse.

If he doesn't pay the US back.. I say we send about 6 guys from the Bronx down there and kick the entire countries ass until they do.

Let's see how well socialism does down there. I'm willing to bet it will be about as successful as it has been everywhere else it's been tried.

So, we only need Xyelin to check in with his opinion, and then we'll be done, right?

Ganalon, I meant Ganalon. ;)

I confuse you lot up. It's to be expected, you all spout the same talking points over and over again.

To be honest, I've yet to receive my talking points from Fox News yet.. so mine were off the cuff.

You complain that we give you the same talking points over and over again.. but we're responding to the same type of posts, over and over again.

It's a vicious cycle.

I think Evo Morales is having a tough time of it in Bolivia at the moment. Its been almost a year? Only time will tell if Equador’s living standards get better or worse.

Its not surprising to me to see this wave in our hemisphere’s neighbors. What is surprising is that for the most part we don’t consider them our greatest allies no matter what economic system they adopt.

I really don't. Socialism is just a joke, especially in a country that was founded in the way America was. "Work hard and you're forced to give your money away!" Sorry, it doesn't work that way here. I also realize this thread isn't about America, just my comments on socialism where it affects me.

I'm glad Ecuador electing a left-wing candidate makes you so happy. Didn't Mexico just elect a right-winger?

Considering what else is happening around the globe, Ecuador's events are pretty small on my radar right now.

Some small facts:

1. Smaller than the state of Nevada with a population of 13m.
2. 95% Roman Catholic
3. The only thing significant about this country is that 51% of 2005 oil exports came to the US. In my opinion their economy needs us more than we need them. Perhaps they can go way left and replace US with China and not feel any effect on their GDP.

So what I really am saying is, the US has greater things to be concerned about. This rates just above Pam Anderson kicking Kid Rock to the curb.

Careful, you put me in your mouth like that and you have to swallow.
