View Full Version : Cher backs effort to modify soldiers' helmets
Hey, I'm elated to see civilians with the resources to step up and assist our armed forces... but this, I dunnno. [/humor]
NEW YORK (AP) -- Cher, who opposes the war in Iraq but supports the troops, says using her celebrity to promote effective helmets for U.S. soldiers is rewarding -- and "the right thing to do."
Last week, she attended a hearing in Washington on whether to modify helmets for soldiers in Iraq. The entertainer has donated more than $130,000 to the group Operation Helmet, which pays about $100 to modify the inside of soldiers' helmets to make them better able to absorb shock from a bomb blast.

I heard a broadcast of a talkshow/newsshow that she called in to express her support for this actually. Lets hope that she manages to give it the support and recognition it needs.

Sounded like a good idea when they did the show on it for CNN, before the Cher angle came into view.
Some aspects of the military already are making it standard and some have not so it is not some crazy idea that Cher thought up or anything.

The concept was developed by a friend of a father of one of the soldiers, from how I understood it. The soldier had called his father (ex -military himself) and asked him to look into getting them safer helmets. The father contacted a friend of his who developed a small pad that is inserted into the helmet to absorb shock. Cher simply supported it as a 'worthy' cause I would imagine.

I'm pretty impressed by the helmets as they are... I remember early in the fighting reading an article about a royal marine who had been shot in his helmet:

I told my father about it and he told me about a friend of his who had been shot in the head in Vietnam, he had just assumed he was dead because his face was covered in blood, turned out his helmet saved him and he just got knocked out by the shot. The army tried to take his helmet back and he said no way in hell, has it over his mantle.
That's pretty amazing stuff to me... although yeah I imagine they dont' do much against blasts.

Uhm yeah the kevlar helmets are by FAR the most superior in the world. The problem is the bombs are causing alot of concussional type wounds.. also can be alleviated to a certain degree by not strapping the helmet on.
That is, by far, the most frightening less-than-a-minute MS-Paint alteration I dun' did witness.

1. Because I find Cher immensely popular to make fun of, and have found her fun to make fun of since I watched her show on TV back in the 70's.
2. Because I was a)making fun of Cher and her hair, and how funny it would look super imposed onto helmets for our army guys, and b) also found it post worthy to mention that civillians are pitching in to help upgrade the equipment our boys are using overseas, not only helmets, as mentioned in this article, but also buying kevlar vests, and food stuffs.
