View Full Version : Do your elected representatives serve your interests?

Yep. Another political topic. PC polls are never scientific. For example, only people with computers that have internet access can vote. Of those that have both, there is no way to confirm or deny that those who do vote have the right to vote in this country.

What the hell. Why not?

Whats the point? What are the opinions of the 733ts with the comps and connects?

Mine do. I've signed up to Megavote (http://www.congress.org/congressorg/megavote/) so I can see how they vote on what issues. For the most part (though not always) Senators Schumer and Clinton have my approval as does my House Rep (McCarthy). Glad I live in NY.

Everyone should sign up for that if they want to know how their reps actually represent them.

The internet is what the people need and thank mankind that we have it. It’s become an avenue to information that transcends the the darkened alleys of corporate ideologues.

Ironic you should have posted this. I have been considering posting about local politicians who are corrupt.

Heh. Couldn't we all, ES? There have been several catfights over Raven in the past! Unfortunately, not one of us females seems to have what it takes. :(

I'm happy with my senators and Representative.(Senators Kennedy and Kerry and Representative Lynch)

They also vote very much the way I do, 97% of the time.

lol you must be a real dyed in the wool Democrat to find these 2 vote the way you want 97% of the time. I don't think I have ever found a politician who votes the way I want with such a high %.

No offence intended

I am very much a Democrat, yes.

I guess that's not much of a surprise.

You mindless sheep you.....the internet was started by the military and they still control it. They use it to spy on citizens and brain wash us. Blogs are nothing more than Military propaganda designed to distract us, so we end up chasing our own tails half the time.

The red pill Backlash take the red pill!!!!!!!

The Internet is really good for advertising. Apart from my President and a Senator, my elected officials serve my interests pretty well.

Show me one elected official that makes everyone in their district happy with their vote.

Great.. he/she may be of the same party as you are and you might agree with him/her, but there are always other people in the other party that are not happy with his/her vote.

It's a stupid poll since no one can possibly make everyone happy.

:yeahthat:

Just to reiterate: Despite what you may have been taught in school or hear on tv, the US is NOT a democracy. We are a democratic republic.

The people do not vote directly on each piece of legislation. If you want your particular voice heard on every issue then this is what you advocate.

Rather we are a system where the many voices select a few to speak for them in a clear and concise fashion.

In my humble opinion, a pure democracy is doomed to failure from the start (much like socialism...) because the tyranny of the majority would be far stronger than in any other system. Minority votes nationwide would carry little if any weight because they are weighed directly against the majority votes. IE: The majority always wins.

Some elected officials follow what their constituents wish directly, by listening to those who call, write, or speak at functions.

Some elected officials think that they should vote their own interests regardless of the wishes of their constituentcy because they 'know' better. There's a term for this but I cant remember it off hand.

And some elected officials think they are voting their constituents views because they were elected by those same people. But they do this without consulting direct feedback on each particular issue that is being voted upon.

And then some officials just never show up for voting period, unless it involves vote trading, pork barrel politiks, or gives them an opportunity to get in front of a media camera.

Personally, I don't see why this is a "stupid" poll.

Backlash is asking if your elected officials views/voting match your own.

As for PB's "It's a stupid poll since no one can possibly make everyone happy. " speech, I must have missed the part in the poll that asked if your elected official makes everyone happy.

So far all i've seen from the right side of the fence is someone taking a subtle poke at a die hard democrat and tons of nay sayers slamming this thread. I haven't seen any republicans have opinions of their elected officials.

Instead of jumping on the "OMG another Backlash political thread, lets pwn him" bandwagon, why don't you either contribute or stop being retarded. I'm not saying don't post, I'm just saying don't be retarded.

Thanks to Raven for pointing some of us towards megavote. Since it's a US government website I assume there's some kind of assurance that it's not bias (for those who dispute links).

I've looked at Allen(R) and Warner(R)(John, not Mark Warner) and their record and I (not very suprisingly) don't agree with a decent portion of their votes.

Well right now my reps are pissing me off simply because of the eminent domain crap going on.

I'll be voting for the green party during the next election here because I'm sick of how they're not fixing our town. I'm upset that they're not letting go of this plan to evict people and move on.

It makes me sad that New London, the town I've grown to love as my home, is now considered "that place that takes people's houses". :(

I checked it for my reps and was pretty good with them for NC. Our governor just flat out rocks. The funny thing is, even though I didn't vote for him, Senator Burr actually seems to try to work on issues that happen to people in North Carolina. He's done a lot of real strong local efforts. Elizabeth Dole, in turn, doesn't really seem to give a damn.

"Do your elected representatives serve your interests?" is the question.

Half of the people will probably say no and the other half will say yes. Hell, in my state alone, there is one Senator that votes mostly my views and then one Senator that votes mostly not my views. In the House, he rarely ever votes with my view.

Now.. what does this actually mean? People affiliate themselves with one of the two parties in the US because they represent most of their views and opinions. If your 'party' doesn't win that particular position.. then it stands to reason that they generally won't vote your views. If they win, then they generally will vote your views.

So, tell me the importance of this poll again?

Well, it's got people talking about their situations. And it's good to see people's opinions, albeit (as you've stated) naive.

Ok, you got me. Its just to piss you off, PB.

Last night I just got to thinking about how disconnected we have become from our elected officials.

We both agree that this two-party system is in dire need of reform. These days those two options are just not enough to cover the vast amount of views the people of this country have.

I might speculate that those in the system want the system to remain this way because it works in their favor. It works in their favor because not only does it give people less options, it homogenizes the issues and concentrates power.

For example, who represents the people who are pro-life and anti-war? In this system those views are almost considered diametrically opposed, but only because of the way the system is set up. Like PB said, you align yourself with one of two groups hoping that MOST of your views are acted upon.

We need more options these days. I think it would do both parties some good to get some competition for many reasons.

Parkbandit

Unfortunately, the 2 parties are so well entrenched into the US Government landscape, there is no way another one will be allowed to become popular. Granted, the Republicans and Democrats hate each other.. but if another upstart party were to come along, they would work together until it was destroyed.

For whatever reason, I've never felt the need to discuss politics. And I still don't.

I'm just pointing out that "733ts" is completely incorrect. 1337 is the correct spelling, so by your alteration, it should have been 133ts.

Therefore, by default, I disagree with whatever Backlash says.

Now that I've had a chance to look at my representatives for my district, I'd say I'm satisfied with how the majority of the votes turned out. And I did sign up for the notification of future votes, handy thing this internet is Gore or no Gore.

I see a brand new system for $199 every weekend in the paper. Add onto that Net Zero for dial up and we are talking less than a dollar a day.
