Donald Trump's fixation with tariffs has become an obsession — a policy panacea he claims will fuel a manufacturing boom, lower grocery prices, cut the deficit, stop wars, pay for tax breaks and even solve the child care crisis.
"Tariffs are the greatest thing ever invented," the former president declared at a town hall in Michigan last week.

Would tariffs do any of the things Trump claims?
Do you know which other President was a big fan of tariffs? Herbert Hoover. Hoover signed a huge tariff law in 1930. In 1932, presidential candidate Franklin Roosevelt campaigned on a promise to lower tariffs, which he mostly succeeded in doing after being elected.

They'd successfully cause inflation they are explode as a result of pass through of the added cost to businesses. Given Trump was on video visibly drooling on himself and bragging about creating the highest tax increases in history, it's safe to say he's well aware he's screwing the people. Again.

Hey, so remember way back in 2018 when Trump issued tariffs (with at that time bipartisan support) against China? No? Look it up. That dipshit Trump though, right?
Except…the Biden administration continued those same tariffs. He could have repealed them with executive order, but he didn’t. Why is that? In fact, Biden just expanded them…. https://amp.cnn.com/cnn/2024/09/13/politics/china-tariffs-biden-trump

The 2018 tariffs were targeted to importers of specific products or from specific countries. Trump's new tariff proposal is global, applying to every import from every country.

I suppose you're confused about how foreign policy works, reinforced by your thoughts on Trump giving Afghanistan to terrorists. What do you think happens if foreign adversaries are shown that American policy and stability is only as consistent as the length of a single president's term? Do you think the loss of face caused by the immediate reversal of US policy the moment Trump was deposed would be helpful to longterm negotiations? Nah. Trump's threatening to double down on a detrimental position he took despite the countless warnings of economists about the results, and only you MAGA assholes and Trump himself believe it's a smart move

Do you honestly think that the rest of the world doesn't already think USA policy is as fickle as the occupant in the Whitehouse? If you do, then you are even dumber than I thought. It's a real reason we have a lot of trouble in the world, our policy shifts greatly, we forget allies and abandon our supporters and so people just hide and out wait us because we are a nation of short sighted children who lack the guts to really do things like stamp out cartels, human trafficking, radical Islam and so on. It took the British more than 36 years to end the African slave trade. It only took Hillary under a year to bring it back. Americans like to talk tough and we hit hard when we want too but we don't have the stamina to stay in a nasty fight for the long haul these days.
And Tariffs will be a negotiation starting point. The only people that don't understand that are the racist, anti-Semite, abelist pieces of shit like you that support murdering babies and the mass rape of Jewish women because "It's complicated".

Ok. Publicly confess that Trump’s 2018 tariffs on China was a good thing that was continued & expanded by the Biden administration. Tariffs are an economic tool with positive & negative consequences which has its uses.
Once you do that and we establish a baseline, we can discuss the impacts of proposing (a negotiation point) of a 10% global tariff since we are by far the largest importer in the world.

I think a lot of people have forgotten the purpose of tariffs. Yes, the cost is passed on to consumers. It is designed to make foreign made stuff more expensive so that consumers favor domestic made products and support domestic companies.

Economic populism drives inflation, reduces product diversity, promotes retaliatory tariffs and trade-wars; all of which fucks domestic consumers. Increasing corporate profits hardly seems like a worthy outcome.

I think a lot of people have forgotten that 100's of thousands of Americans gave their lives to end the Democrat institution of slavery and continuing to import goods made by slaves is a slap in the face of the lives sacrificed to end the scourge of slavery in this country.

Because it will incentivize those companies to start building their shit over here instead of exporting it from their own country.
Which also creates more jobs in the US, which is 100% of the reason why you can't understand any of this. Because anything involving a job is completly foreign to you and is like holy water to a vampire.

Because, as everyone knows, in the year 2024 the sale of all goods follow the same dynamics as walnut trees.
Because that's all we really sell, digital items and services are functionally identical, and, of course, there are no other factors involved in a market other than "supply" and "demand" because 7th grade is as far as Neveragain ever got in school.
