TAIPEI, July 17 (Reuters) - Taiwan should pay the U.S. for its defence as it does not give the country anything, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump told Bloomberg Businessweek, sending shares of Taiwanese chip manufacturer TSMC lower on Wednesday.
"I know the people very well, respect them greatly. They did take about 100% of our chip business. I think, Taiwan should pay us for defence," Trump said in interview on June 25 that was published on Tuesday.
"You know, we're no different than an insurance company. Taiwan doesn't give us anything."

Contrary to popular belief, the U.S. does not have a defense treaty with Taiwan requiring the U.S. to defend Taiwan, as explained in the below linked paper from the Brooking Institution.
Another anomaly is the absence of an American treaty commitment to come to Taiwan’s defense if it were ever attacked. Such a treaty, the U.S.-ROC mutual defense treaty, existed from 1954 to 1979, but the Carter administration terminated it as a condition for establishing relations with the PRC. But the United States has sustained a political commitment to Taiwan, under the rubric of the Taiwan Relations Act, which was enacted in 1979.1 Substantively, moreover, the security relationship with Taiwan and its military is broad and deep. The United States seeks to enhance Taiwan’s military capabilities through substantial arms sales, fortified by ongoing contacts between the two defense establishments.

What would it mean if Taiwan paid the U.S. for defense, which Trump likened to paying for an insurance policy? Would that mean the U.S. will be obligated to go to war with China when, not if, China forcibly takes control of Taiwan?
Also, I am disappointed that Trump has started pronouncing defense with a c. He's faking a European accent.
