I'm going to make a plea here, to the old players who have long since retired from Gemstone IV, due to various reasons, including disagreements with the GM's or otherwise.

Due to Covid, Gemstone IV has lost nearly 30% of it's userbase over the last 2 years. Weekend levels have dropped to the 400's during peak hours.

We really need you guys to start up some Free Accounts and to raise the population up by at least 50-200.

Also, if you are going to be playing from a Phone Browser, then I highly recommend Opera.

I've tried multiple Browsers and so far Opera has the smoothest interface and is easiest on the eyes.

For those who left over argumentative reasons, please think about putting those aside so that we can honor the dead who have passed and so that we can at least make an attempt to put the game back to the levels that they themselves were resoonsible for creating.

If you go with Opera, I recommend scaling the Text back to it's tiniest setting available in the Settings option. Also, Opera has a unique Text option called "Text Wrapping". Make sure to switch that on as well in order to consolidate the words of the backround descriptions, etc.

Personally I also choose one of the Darker themes and colors for my browser screen. It's almost as if Opera was made for text based gaming. I was very impressed by the difference it makes with the game when logging in through the main official website.

Then all you have to do is zoom in on the screen with your two thumbs by pulling them away from each other from the center of the screen, and then center it with the Gboard open, and then you can start typing in commands and you will be good to go.

Just make sure to leave the Gboard up and open, or you will have to keep popping it back up.

very helpful thread. I had left the game a few years back for argumentative reasons but have returned recently on my phone (as I am sure most users - 87% - play in 2023). I had been using the Brave browser but after your recommendation I have switched to Opera and it is smoother and the high contrast allows me to follow the flow of the game better. I do not know what you suggest regarding honoring the dead but I believe after the losses we face it is a good thing to consider. thank you.

I highly doubt that those responsible for creating Gemstone would approve where Gemstone is today. I will honor them by not playing.

I tried. I’m not sure if it is me or the game, but after the nostalgia quickly wore off I just couldn’t get into it. It feels like the only reason the game exists is for end-game content & paid events.

Edit: If they make something like a ladder season with everyone starting at level 0, I’ll do it.

As you all know, it has been tradition for Parents to pass this game onto their Children for decades.

The reason for this, is because Children of Parents who play this game have a natural Genetically Presdispositioned set of DNA within them which allows them to quickly adapt to the game's mechanics and environment.

I myself passed this game onto my Daughter, who started playing it at 7 years old. Which I personally find rather exceptional, because I didn't start playing Gemstone until I was 13 years old, and I defiitely would not have been able to grasp it at the young age of 7.

At late night I normally see it drop into the 200's.

However, the good news is, that after this thread was made, I did see a significant increase in activity.

GS already has ASCII art in the game. Just not for most things, probably because no one actually gives a fuck.

The main advantages that MUD's have over virtually all other games is two things. The fact that they can be played from virtually any device, including Tablets, Computers, Cell Phones, even gaming systems with Browsers. I once logged into Gemstone from an Xbox 360.

The second advantage is that their multiplayer is always solid. It's not limited like other games. It can have thousands of people in game at any time. Good luck doing that from most any console.

Most of them take up zero memory on your system and they also require zero updates or downloads.

For this reason MUD's will never die.

However, they do need to be retrofitted and updated. Adding graphics is a simple part of that process.

The reason I chose ASCII Art for backgrounds and cityscapes and descriptions is because it doesn't take away anything from the keyboard interface in the game. It doesn't force anyone to have to use a mouse which would take away Gemstone's current ability to be played from almost anything gaming wise.

ASCII Art wouldn't slow down the game. It wouldn't interfere with the code, and it still looks professionally done.

For Gemstone IV I think ASCII Art is a perfect upgrade.

If anything, it will allow them to test out graphics with the game, before they might be able to go in a different direction.

I spend every single day promoting Gemstone IV. To the point where I do that more than I play the actual game. I never thought promoting would be as fun as it is, but it's that one person I reach who says, "Cool." That makes it all worth it.

A few years ago Gemstone 4 had a 3 month boost in their membership, where they themselves on their site claimed that they had almost reached 1990 levels of players in their game.

A little tip while you guys are using Opera Browser to play the game with from your phone.

Whenever the game lags or slows down or freezes, just hit the back button on your phone and it will take you out of the game and back to your character log in screen.

Then, just log in with your character again and it will refresh the game and everything will be fast and smooth again.

It's a much faster method than opening and closing windows.

Just make sure not to hit the back button too many times on your phone or it will take you too far back.

Oh and sometimes depending on what you are doing or where you are at in the game you might have to tap the back button more than once to get to the character log in screen. It's just the way that cookie crumbles.

There's a ;hardcore Lich script for it, but I have no idea how it works, since I never bothered with any of it.

Oh, yeah I didn’t mean hardcore as in 1 death means you are done. I don’t really get that appeal either. In a game like Gemstone where death is a mathematical certainty (at some point in time) in most hunting areas, those people are nuts. More power to them though.

I mean like a new instance of Gemstone where there is no legacy player base. Everyone has to start by rolling a new character. The ladder season lasts only so long, like say a year, at which point your character moves from that ladder server into the Prime server with the general population. Imagine at the start of the season everyone is hunting rats together. Nobody has access to 10x sick weighted gear. It’s a competition for the top players who can achieve the highest level / most fame by the end of it, and a unique experience for everyone.

GM's forever have said that it is balanced enough that anyone can cap with regular 4x gear. Hard core yes was about not getting dead but also about testing that. Hardcore was ftp too though so outside of a 100k budget nobody had much to work with. As far as I know the honor system did hold up for the people that participated. If the winner ever got his money I'm not sure. Ardkor clearly won it maybe he will tell us.

GS should just copy Diablo 3 seasons, except keep the sick gear in, but just have it all be random drops. It's all going to reset after a few months anyway, so even if someone finds the greatest IWIN sword in the history of gaming, they're only going to have it for a short time. And if someone actually wants to spend $5k buying it from someone else, they're still only going to have it for a few months, which makes them extra stupid.

Go the extra mile and get rid of exp absorption too and just make it all instant or at least greatly accelerated. Mess with different things each season, add/remove new mechanics, etc. Balance doesn't matter when the world resets every few months, and they can add/remove features for each season.

And throw in leaderboards for 98747328942370 different things.

Only problem is Simu figuring out how to exploit that to rip people off for thousands of dollars, which would be pretty much impossible, which is why something like this would never happen.

And also because it would require actual real dev instead people sitting around working on dumb retarded shit all day long that like 3 people are into.

Honest to God I have an interview schedueled for Tuesday at 7:00 AM with a Publicist and I am currently making plans to write a How To Book on how to play Gemstone IV.

This initial interview is going to be more of a fact finding mission for myself in which I am going to take as many notes as pissible for how to get started on the Book as well as how much it's going to cost to get it Published and Printed, etc.

If the Book only reaches 100 People in it's Lifespan, then maybe at least 1 of those People will give Gemstone IV a try.

I am fully committed to the project either way. So I am chomping at the bit to get this done.

I've always wanted to write a Book, I used to write stories all the time and I would have the Artists in my class do the Illustrations.

I've never been passionate about one subject to Write about until now though. I also don't believe in coincidence. So I know that timing is everything.

As far as what spurred me on to Write a Gemstone IV how to guide, I would say if I had to sum it all up in one word, then it would be Frustration.

Frustration on multiple levels. Not the least of which is that such an amazing and wonderful game, that has such depth and an interconnectivity that no other Game even comes close to possessing, continues to go unnoticed and unexperienced by the World's Population. After nearly 50 years of it's existence. It just has an unnerving sadness about it.

I have tried everything else I could to promote this game. 2 Social Media Pages, I've tried sending it to practically every single gaming group on Facebook, and I have been kicked off Facebook twice for doing so. lol. Sharing 50 posts at a time to all the groups. I promote it every day on my Messenger Chat Program. Yet still, it doesn't feel like I have done enough.

After this Book is done and Published, and on a shelf somewhere, then my ultimate hope for the Game is that I will have contributed all that I could to it's survival and to it's Future. However long that may be.

Gemstone IV is the only game where when someone has laughed at my post about it and said, "It's just another silly game out there which I have way more important things to be concerned with', I have actually been able to come back at them with a literal plea, where I respond with, "No Sir/Mam, it isn't just a game in any way, shape, or form. On a side note, I kid you guys not, I had a real conversation yesterday with the real Alexis Fawx, the Porn Star.

As luck would have it, she somehow got on my Friends List. On Facebook. I have absolutely no clue how either. lol.

I am a Christian so I told her that I do my best to distance myself from Porn.

She laughed at the fact that I didn't know her age and that, "Surely I must not be a real fan then." I laughed about that too and said, "I don't know stories just faces." After which I also admitted to her that I had definitely seen a few scenes of hers. lol

I also met Brittany Sky in person too. By chance again. In which case we locked eyes for a moment which was pretty cool.

In the case with Roxy, I can tell you guys that she was just as horny as she would later become, and that when I saw her for the first time, she was sitting on this black dude's lap and calling him Daddy. She looked to be around 16 or 17 at the time.

That dude Jason was literally crazy though. You'd see him doing back flips all over the place and whenever we would enter the Cafeteria for lunch he would literally be holding himself up on the ceiling and he would drop down out of nowhere and surprise everybody.

Throw in every city gang that you can imagine and indeed, it was truly a circus.
