View Full Version : Alabama to Prosecute Those Who Help Women Travel to Obtain Abortions

Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall said the state can prosecute people who help women travel out of state for abortions in response to a lawsuit filed by a pro-abortion rights group and owners of women’s clinics.
More... (https://www.al.com/news/2023/08/alabama-can-prosecute-those-who-help-women-travel-for-abortion-attorney-general-says.html)
“Though abortion may be legal elsewhere, it is plainly illegal pursuant to Ala. Code § 13A-4-4 for Plaintiffs to conspire with others to procure abortions that would be illegal in Alabama,” according to Marshall’s motion. “The criminal conduct is the agreement (the conspiracy) itself, which is conduct that occurs in Alabama that Alabama has every right to prosecute. Thus, the legality of abortion in other States is irrelevant to whether Alabama can prosecute a conspiracy formed in Alabama.”
The First Amendment does not cover speech related to breaking the law, according to Marshall’s motion.
“While Plaintiffs’ clients may be allowed under Alabama law to obtain abortions outside Alabama, Plaintiffs are ‘plainly [not] allow[ed]’ under Ala. Code § 13A-4-4 to conspire in Alabama to help procure abortions.”
Here is the statute that AL AG Marshall cited..
A conspiracy formed in this state to do an act beyond the state, which, if done in this state, would be a criminal offense, is indictable and punishable in this state in all respects as if such conspiracy had been to do such act in this state.
It's amazing how issues come in groups. The recent criminal indictments relating to J6 are mostly conspiracy cases. Alabama is using a criminal conspiracy theory to try to keep women from traveling, unless they travel alone, to another state to obtain an abortion. By the end of this year, we'll all be experts on conspiracy law.

Mmm......
This is a tough one, on the basis of "A conspiracy formed in this state to do an act beyond the state, which, if done in this state, would be a criminal offense".
Be interesting to see how this plays out, and it has further reaching effects than abortion.

This is digusting.
Prosecuting people who help get women a clean, safe abortion?
What the hell.
You know, when I was younger, I used to think that the world was a relatively stable place. But as I've grown, I've realized what a shit hole it truly is. I just can't figure out if it's getting worse, or if it has always been this bad.
But honest to God. I am a citizen of the United States (not living in the United States) and quite honestly, I am sick to my teeth.
Go ahead and elect the main star of The Apprentice one more time. See how much further the world spits on you...

True. You'd think it would have come up before in the context of other crimes. Surely, the AL Attorney General, who knew this particular statue by its code number, researched whether or not the statute had been interpreted before.

It's so terrible that the state wants to prevent people that live there from conspiring to break it's law in order to murder a baby for no good reason.
The world has never been really stable. The most stable it has ever been was immediately after WWII when the US had the troops and weapons to smack down anyone and everyone was tired of war.
No one should give a fuck what the rest of the world thinks of the US since they don't give a fuck what we think of them. They already mock us at every turn in their media and politically. So, why should we give a fuck? We shouldn't. I would rather the world respect us from a position of strength and dominance rather than our current administration's policy of begging and cow towing to foreign leaders and woke ideology.
Abortion is the simplest issue ever, don't fuck without protection, don't murder your fucking baby.

Not much new can be said on this last paragraph.
There are situations where even with protection pregnancy can occur.
As for the US not giving a "fuck" about what the rest of the world thinks? Well, good for you.
As for the US being "respected" from a position of Strength and Dominance. Well, you'll see how far that gets you.
You know, I really don't give a shit.
I used to watch The Apprentice. It was relatively entertaining. Until that fat, ugly, beef-eating addict-looking douchebag came into the boardroom and reaked up the intelligence of the room and eventually made the series crash due to poor ratings.
I mean, can it get any more idiotic? Go away Mr. T. Trump. You are not wanted, anywhere.
Does it get simpler than that?
Also, I really don't care.

Why are you mad that Trump eats beef though?
You really are one of those soy fueled vegans aren't you? The other option is that you hate beef now simply because Trump eats it. Which would be even more hilarious and I give either a 50/50 chance of being the case.

Well, let's objectively look at the issues.
Under Trump with the rest of the world on edge due to a position of strength, we didn't have new wars, we didn't abandon Americans to die in a foreign land, we didn't supply billiuons in military equipment to terrorists, we didn't send pallets of cash to Iran, we have a great economy and unemployment was the lowest ever for minorities.
But you don't care about that so yeah, take your soy slurping racist ass and crawl back into the hole you slithered out of.

If you are referring to the Black unemployment rate, it hit a low point in 2019, but that record was beaten during the Biden administration. If you pick the very best monthly unemployment number for every minority group during the Trump administration, you'll have difficulty finding one that was not beaten during the Biden administration. And if you want to look at averages over the full presidential term, instead of picking the best month, then it's not even close.

You are out of touch with polling on Biden’s performance on the economy. A low unemployment rate is great, but it doesn’t help when wages are not keeping up with inflation on the cost of living & consumer goods. Everyone feels that pain when they fill up their gas tank, gets a loan from the bank, or simply taking their kids to get a meal at Chic-Fil-A. We can debate all day long but consistent poll data on Biden’s approval rating paints a far different picture.

The person to whom I was responding said he wanted to at the issue "objectively," which is why I responded objectively. The historical unemployment rate is an objective fact that will not change. Public opinion polls, which are designed to measure subjective information, will change between now and election day, as will the real economy.

Fair enough. Wages & inflation is objective data. You are right the economy will change between now and Election Day. As I have said before, if we are in a recession between now and then Biden will lose. If somehow the economy doesn’t go into a full blown recession, defying all predictions by reputable investment bankers and economists, he may win.
Speaking of subjective opinions and poll data, you must be one of those rare hardcore minority extreme Biden-sucking Democrats that wants him to run for re-election. https://www.axios.com/2023/09/07/poll-biden-2024-second-term-democrat-voters-cnn

Yes, sometime in the past they took out the cost of food, fuel, and I think housing from the calculation. Ya know, the THREE things that we spend the highest percentage of our wages on are no longer factored into inflation. Riddle me that Batman!! It was done because without them the COLA every year for SSA and military retirements, as well as the annual increase for active duty is lower.
As for the abortion thing, I guess it is pretty simple, how would you feel if someone assisted your children in going out of state to a religious camp without your permission. If they are adults, it is there business, I am very libertarian when it comes to things like that. I hate abortion but it does not involve me so I stay out of it.

Unemployment rate is not the same as unemployment since it's a synthetic number. More minority people were employed under Trump than ever before. Facts don't care about your copium.

The same can be said for the majority of Presidents, since the population increases over time. Are you sure you want objective truth, as you said? I'm starting to suspect that you prefer it slanted. Here's another similar, and absolutely objectively true, Trump achievement that I think you will enjoy. Trump was President number 45. No President in history before him ever had such a high number. It was huge! Biggest presidential number ever at that time.

False.
Sorry Clyde, you are wrong:
Keeping inflation low has been a key concern of the Federal Reserve System (the Fed) for most of its 100-year history. In pursuit of this policy, the Fed focuses on core inflation, inflation that excludes volatile components, often (though not exclusively) seen as food and energy prices.
Go here and read it, or not, I do not care.

Your position has drifted. You initially said the measure of inflation had changed to remove the effects of housing, food and energy prices, and you said that COLA computations were being made without regard to housing, food and energy prices. That was false. Now, you are saying that the Fed concentrates on other matters in its attempt to control inflation. That may be true, but it does not make validate your original statement about inflation indexes and COLA computations.

Clyde I am not going to get into a debate with you about this, but in the interest of clarity I said food and energy and I think housing, turns out it is only food and energy. If you would like I can dig out from a gov website where it says that COLA and military pay rate increases are tied to inflation, but you know what, even were I to do that, you would disagree so I will not bother.
I will concede that military pay rates are not directly tied to inflation, but influenced by it, they are directly tied to how little congress can get away with increasing it every year, a point which is coming back to haunt the country given the severe decline in retention/enlistment/application rates.

First, it's ClydeR, you are wasting your time.
Second, I highly doubt that pay is the primary driver of the failing military enrollment currently. I would place failed policies, likelihood of war, social engineering BS and the current public perception pushed by the media much higher on the list of issues.

I agree that all of those are contributing factors, that being said more money and not destroying the retirement system would go a long way to making people more open to the possibility. And while we are at it, how about not screwing with retired health benefits too.
The powers that be have been paying lip service to supporting the military for years now, and not just this administration. After a period where the military was appreciated and the actions of the government reflected that we are now in a period where that no longer seems to be the case and public opinion, while not terrible, is not what it once was. Those of us that served do not put up with all the bullshit for adulations or to get rich, but a little appreciation and a fair wage go a long way to enticing and keeping people.
Ok, I will stop derailing the thread and get off of my soapbox now.
