This will be worse than Covid.
The bird flu has proven scary enough with its occasional spreads from birds to mammals of all sorts, but the study published in Eurosurveillance calls the latest devastation of mink sicknesses and deaths especially concerning. “Our findings also indicate that an onward transmission of the virus to other minks may have taken place in the affected farm,” the study authors write.
That raises the alarm that humans could be next. “This outbreak signals the very real potential for the emergence of mammal-to-mammal transmission,” Michelle Wille, a University of Sydney researcher, tells CBC News.
“It could have deadly consequences,” Isaac Bogoch, an infectious disease specialists, tells CBC News. “This is an infection that has epidemic and pandemic potential. I don’t know if people recognize how big a deal this is.”
Well, that’s comforting.
The H5N1 avian influenza is notorious for a near 100-percent mortality rate in birds. While mammals aren’t catching the virus at the same rate as birds, they aren’t immune to the effects: bird flu has a global WHO mortality rate of greater than 50 percent for humans.

Under Trump, the U.S. objectively performed worse during the COVID pandemic than most other developed nations. Nobody should want a less mentally competent Trump to repeat that disaster when faced with a deadlier virus, like the bird flu.

In the weeks and months to come, when dairy farmworkers or others culling infected poultry flocks develop influenza-like symptoms, what ails them could be a common cold, Covid-19, regular influenza, or a bird flu virus. Spotting a new flu virus before it starts to transmit more easily among humans and stopping that spread — if it’s possible — could make the difference between a close call and something no one wants, another pandemic.

H5N1 bird flu has been identified in a pig in the United States for the first time, the US Department of Agriculture said Wednesday.

H5N1 is a type of influenza that’s rare in humans but is highly contagious and deadly in several species of animals, including poultry and dairy cattle, raising fears that it could mutate and become a virus that preys on people, too.
Scientists have been concerned that H5N1 might spread to pigs, which are considered “mixing bowl” species for flu viruses because they carry the same kind of receptors on cells in their lungs as humans and birds.
Meanwhile,..
Donald Trump said Friday that if he wins the presidency, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will “have a big role in health care.”
“He's going to have a big role in health care, a very big role. He knows it better than anybody,” Trump said during a campaign stop in Dearborn, Michigan.

CNN — A patient in Louisiana has been hospitalized with a severe case of H5N1 bird flu, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said, the first such case in the United States.
The agency said Wednesday that the person was exposed to sick and dead birds in backyard flocks; this is the first US bird flu case linked to a backyard flock.
“It is believed that the patient that was reported by Louisiana had exposure to sick or dead birds on their property. These are not commercial poultry, and there was no exposure to dairy cows or their related products,” said Dr. Demetre Daskalakis, director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases at the CDC.

I'm sure Donald Trump and RFK, Jr. will have it under control in no time, since Dr. Fauci won't be in Trump's way.
This virus, D1.1, is the same type found in recent human cases in Canada and Washington state and detected in wild birds and poultry in the United States. It’s different from B3.13, the type detected in dairy cows, some poultry outbreaks and other cases in humans across the United States.

After thinking about it, I would add the suggestion that anybody with chickens should consider getting rid of them for a year or so, just until we see how this shakes out. There is no reason to delay taking that precaution.

The Trump administration has intervened in the release of important studies on the bird flu, as an outbreak escalates across the United States.
One of the studies would reveal whether veterinarians who treat cattle have been unknowingly infected by the bird flu virus. Another report documents cases in which people carrying the virus might have infected their pet cats.
The studies were slated to appear in the official journal of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. The distinguished journal has been published without interruption since 1952.

Just realized Clyder started this thread almost exactly 2 years ago, half way through Biden's term, warning us all that bird flu was spreading like wildfire throughout the US and chickens everywhere were getting infected.
Now here we are, 2 years later and Trump hasn't even been in office for a month yet and Clyder is all like "Why are egg prices so high? Why hasn't Trump cured all of the chickens yet?"

I'm waiting for Latrin to post before I make any decision on Bird Flu.
