Conservative commentator Megyn Kelly threw a fit on Twitter during Sunday’s NFC championship game over a single word uttered by the announcers: “Doctor,” as in “Dr. Jill Biden.”
The first lady grew up in the Philadelphia area and was at the game to cheer on her Eagles as the team defeated the San Francisco 49ers to earn a trip to the Super Bowl.
The announcers used the title when they spotted her in the crowd, causing Kelly to rage-tweet:
Announcers for this Eagles-49ers game just spotted the First Lady in a box and of course call her “Dr. Jill Biden.” Wonder if she realizes what a wannabe she looks like insisting on this fake title. Get a real MD or just work on your self-esteem.

Should you call people with a PhD "Doctor" if they're not a medical doctor?

It's a long standing tradition regarding the degree and should not be discarded. It's part of why the title of a Medical Doctor is MD not just Doctor.

If wearing military garb and claiming military status, rank and awards called "Stolen Valor" touting unverified degrees could be called "Stolen Intelligence".

Completing a doctorate degree can be one of the most difficult accomplishments a person can achieve. While undergrad is sometimes little more than glorified high school, degrees beyond the bachelor's level can be rigorous and super time intensive. Jill isn't a medical doctor, which is how most people encounter the title, but she has achieved a mastery of her field. Her title acknowledges that she is among the top scholars in her profession and the courtesy should be extended.

I mean it's a doctorate in education. So it may or may not have been hard. Like people can also get doctorates in musicology, or human resources, or mass media or drama education. Either way, I don't really care, I can imagine in private settings she goes by Jill, just like everyone else.
I work with 6 different doctorates in statistics and mathematics, none of them asks to be called Doctor, one uses it in his signature block, the rest just use it to earn more money.
Sincerely, SHM, PhD

True, but do you walk around calling one another by your first names? I think that possibly the only reason she, or anyone holding that title, is addressed with it is that in almost any school setting it's the norm is to address the teacher/admin with a title. Dr. has been used in every system I've worked in.
As far as her degree, I know for my Master's in Education Admin I took semesters of school law courses, statistics classes and did endless projects dealing with student population, learning trends, testing, achievements, etc. Apply those things to more advanced educational core classes in curriculum, scheduling, case studies and staffing/HR kinds of things-all while still teaching- and I was a very tired and cranky person with far too much in my head! I can only imagine the rigor of the PhD, but it's definitely nothing close to a cakewalk.
Just my two cents!

For sure we call each other by first names. Only in academia do I imagine anyone thinks it's important to put doctor in front of their names, because... academia. I have serious prejudice against academia, because they are in a bubble and have no idea what the real world is like.

There are much bigger issues to worry about than if Jill Biden should be called Doctor.

If you’ve ever attended college you’d know Dr is for more than just MDs.
