View Full Version : Gavin Newsom Copies Texas Abortion Law, But for Guns

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) signed a law on Friday modeled after Texas’s anti-abortion law SB 8 — the Texas law which uses private lawsuits to target abortion providers. But there’s one important difference between the two state laws: California’s new law sends these litigious bounty hunters against gun dealers who sell certain guns, including assault weapons and weapons with no serial number.
It’s a high-stakes gambit that will test whether the Supreme Court actually meant what it said in Whole Woman’s Health v. Jackson (2021), which held that because of SB 8’s unique style of enforcement, it was immune from meaningful judicial review — and thus would take effect despite very strong arguments that the law was unconstitutional at the time.

What should the Supreme Court do?

His law is allowing people to sue gun dealers that break already established laws. Every weapon it lists is illegal to own, except for those with specific licenses from the BATFE.
Any gun dealer selling the weapons this bill covers would already be arrestable by the federal government or by laws that already cover the state.

What should the Supreme Court do?
Nothing that can be done. The conservatives can ring their hands over a state taking steps to protect it's citizens by fortifying existing gun laws, but after allowing Texas to start offering bounties over abortions, to stop California from doing the same over illegal weapons would be an appalling conflict.

The Supreme Court can absolutely do things if a case gets appealed to their level. The Texas law is defunct at this point anyways.
They can also argue the 2nd Amendment protects gun sellers as much as owners, as completely drop all of California's existing laws. I don't think it is wise for Newsom to try and make this fight with the court's current makeup.

It's a fight worth having. If one state wants to issue bounties for abortions it's made illegal by state law, then another state can and will issue bounties for actions made illegal by their state laws. If the Supreme Court elects to take up the case, I'm sure LOT of people would be interested in the justification they try to use protecting Conservative interests and rejecting Democratic.

Newsom has made it such that anyone that gets shot with a firearm for any reason, the subjects in his state can sue the gun manufacturer for damages and the state of California will help them do so. I think it’s very likely to be struck down in the courts if challenged, but in the meantime it is the nail in the coffin for gun manufacturers to do any business whatsoever in that state.
I’m already witnessing discussions in the gun community & industry to bar any firearms sales not just to private citizens but the California government as well. Let’s see how Newsom likes it when the police in his state and his own private security doesn’t have access to purchase firearms or ammunition.

I could care less what the wackos in Kalifornia do, that seething cesspool will implode soon enough from their own unfunded liabilities, that being said, the difference between the two issues is that one is protected under a constitutional amendment and the other is not.
The irony is that it will never accomplish what mr gel hair says it will as criminals do not obtain their firearms through a legal purchase. This is kalifornia trying to find a way to let thousands of people file frivolous lawsuits against firearm manufacturers.

I know you have absolutely no idea about firearms or your own backward ass laws, but allow me to educate you. Prior to all of this California maintains a state list of DOJ approved firearms. Take a guess of how many firearms have been added to that roster since 2001. While you poor peasant subjects are only allowed to purchase Gen3 Glocks, your police & everybody living in a free state can buy the latest Gen5 Glocks. Those are simply too dangerous for you as a subject to own Seran. Don’t worry though…criminals of course are obeying these laws & you can always trust your government to “protect” you. This is among a myriad of other absolutely dumb Comifornications designed to keep you in your place as an obedient little sheep.
It’s all good though and glad it makes you happy. Do me a favor though… Remain in Comifornia in the bed you made and stay the hell out of Texas. Only your supreme leader is allowed to eat unmasked at the French Laundry, gets to send his kids to private school exempt from those absurd government re-education camps, and can vacation in Montana on the taxpayer’s dime.

So police will be unable to purchase firearms, because they have access to models that civilians don't. That makes sense if you also assume that we live in bizarro world and the gun industry stops wanting to make money by selling to government agencies.

The gun community is kinda close knit and they understand hypocrisy. Barrett and many others stopped selling to LE in California many years ago and still does not to this day. We’ll see what happens. https://www.gunowners.org/op0304/

The 'gun community' is nuts. But certain gun retailers stopped selling to New York, but the idea that state and local agencies in California, the most populous and prosperous state in the nation wouldn't be able to obtain handguns, rifles or shotguns for their officers is nuts.

Yeah still not buying it. If you were a Fudd (that’s a derogatory term used for a person that hunts with something like an old 12 gauge or .22 rifle but supports gun control…usually a boomer but not always), you would have at least a very basic education in firearms. Your previous posts make it clear that you lack any knowledge or experience whatsoever on the subject, so I call bullshit.
And I legit shoot a minimum 250 rounds a month (1 long range day), so unless you are genociding wabbit populations... I’m more of a collector but I like to keep my shooting skills sharp.

This reminds me of the time Backlash claimed he owned a gun.. then found out he needs to be against guns and we never.heard.from.him.about.his.gun.again.
If you own a gun, then the system obviously is flawed because you are the type of person we enact gun laws to prevent gun ownership.

Not to nitpick a great quote, but there are a fair number of handguns that are now more powerful than the .44 Mag, most notably the .50 AE comes to mind. And then you can get one of these!

I believe Dirty Harry may have been incorrect even at the time he said it. His was also using a S&W Model 29, but same caliber. Immortan Joe in Mad Max: Fury Road did have a Colt Anaconda though.

Desert Eagles, especially the .50, are pieces of shit for any usage outside of just having one.
And btw, if you are going for something in .50, you might as well get .500 S&W, it is far more powerful.
If they remade Dirty Harry today, they'd probably give him this...

I shot a S&W 500 once, and once was enough for me. Im actually not really much of a revolver guy, but this Anaconda just looked so big & beautiful. I think .44 magnum is the most powerful of the still kinda practical calibers.

Honestly, revolvers aren't really super practical for police/combat situations at all anymore. 6 rounds vs some that can hold over 18 rounds and fire a lot faster and with far less recoil. Revolvers are mostly fun guns or "prestige" weapons. Yeah, they can fuck you up, but I'd rather rock a .45 or a 9mm semi-automatic pistol. And this isn't to excuse the Desert Eagle. Those are ridiculously heavy and bulky for a pistol. You might as well have a rifle if you are lugging that around.
Also, I want this one.

Totally agree.
The FN five-seven is awesome, a joy to shoot, and its high velocity round has several cool advantages. The problem you will find though for use as a practical carry gun…ammo is hard to find and it’s very expensive when you do. If that’s not a big deal for you it’s a great firearm, but just know that going in. Also the second generation of those are much improved. That caliber was dying a slow death until Ruger copied the FN five-seven pistol (can’t remember what Ruger called theirs) and breathed new life into it. I hope 5.7x28 round continues to become more mainstream.

Dang that stinks you can’t get the good stuff. They did the same to surplus 7n6 5.45x39 even though it’s really not armor penetrating. Any bullet going fast enough can defeat level iiia soft armor. When it comes to penetrating body armor velocity is king. With the level iv hard plates you need both velocity and a heavy tungsten core.

All it really is, it that the round on a regular 5.7 has rifle ballistics and easily penetrates soft armor, which is what most cops use. Any rifle can penetrate that, but pistol rounds typically can't.
The rounds you can buy are subsonic or hollow point, neither of which will penetrate soft armor effectively.
Of course, even the lowest level NIJ certified plates can stop any of the 5.7 rounds.

The Python is what I was looking at first, but the Anaconda won my heart for a few reasons. I already have a 357 magnum (my dad’s old S&W Model 19). The new Colt snake guns are amazing. The old Anaconda’s were built on the trooper markiii coil mainspring design and were nowhere near the hand fitted quality of the old Pythons. However these new production Anacondas share the same leaf spring design as the new Pythons, and are truly just a bigger beefier version. The trigger is so smooth in double action and the finish is amazing. Both the new Python & Anaconda are great, but I opted for the biggest baddest snake Colt ever made.
The only other Colt I own is an original army issued SAA that’s a family heirloom. I don’t shoot that one because of the age, value, and black power Cowboy shooting is just not my thing.
