Europe is banning octopus farming because of ethical concerns. Is bacon next? Will the USA follow suit?

The authors said they were "convinced that high-welfare octopus farming was impossible" and the government "could consider a ban on imported farmed octopus" in future.

"We have an example of an organism that has evolved to have an intelligence that is extremely comparable to ours." Their problem-solving abilities, playfulness and curiosity are very similar to those of humans, says Dr Vinther - and yet they're otherworldly.

"This is potentially how it would look if we were ever going to meet an intelligent alien from a different planet."

If we ever find aliens -- and before anybody starts something, I'm referring to aliens on another planet, not illegal aliens -- I hope they're delicious.

Factory farming on land has evolved differently around the world. Pigs, for example, have been shown to be intelligent - so what's the difference between a factory-farmed pig producing a bacon sandwich, and a factory-farmed octopus being put in the common Spanish dish Pulpo a la Gallega?

The conservationists argue the sentience of many farmed animals wasn't known when the intensive systems were set up, and the mistakes of the past shouldn't be repeated.

I'll skip the soup with tentacles floating in it, but for different reasons.

Personally I think Octopi are fun to eat but not necessarily tasty. Like squid, they're fun to eat cause they're weird. But I could definitely be happier with chicken or fish in terms of a good proteins to center a meal around.

I wouldn't eat dog, and I wouldn't eat dolphin. I guess I could see adding Octopi to the list for the reason(s) above but it wouldn't be a hard line for me like dog. If someone tried to sneak me a blackened Octopi leg I'd prolly still nom on it.

This sounds like more of an admission that factory farming is the only way to feed large populations. Or there is too much money involved. Or people want cheap steaks.

Idako (baby octopus) is one of my favorite sushi nigiri orders. Delicious. Takoyaki as well.

Some people think Fallen, some people think others. He used to pretend to be Colbert and pretend to be a Republican but now he is mainly just a moron.

Ok, I would not actually eat one but this popped into my head while reading.

For a while a lot of us thought it was Latrin. Then someone briefly got mod powers a couple years ago and I can't remember who the fuck it was (Alastir?), supposedly compared the IP addresses and came to the conclusion that Fallen = ClydeR.

Yeah, Alastir did.

I'm only quoting you for context, not because I'm talking to you. Because you're stupid.

The problem with most places like this isn't the fact that the animal gets killed in the end, but their living conditions are typically extremely shitty resulting in basically a life of torture, and I doubt much is being done to enforce whatever regulations are in place that's supposed to prevent that kind of shit. At least here. Places like China give absolutely zero fucks.

And yeah the more intelligent the animal in question is, the worse it is obviously. I don't know shit about octupii but pigs are pretty intelligent, and cows seem to have some sort of clue what's happening too.

If there's one thing I agree with vegans on, it's that kind of shit.

We'll probably be capable of filling up grocery stores everywhere with lab grown meat within the next 10-20 years. The technology exists already, even if not perfected yet. Whether it actually happens or not though will depend on how bad the politics and lobbying and all that scumbag shit goes.

Then we'll be bitching about Big Farma instead of Big Pharma.
