View Full Version : How Many Reparation Payments Did You Make on Juneteenth?

In the absence of broad financial restitution to the descendants of slaves and Black Americans, some people are taking to Twitter to ask for reparations — and transacting through Venmo and Cash App.

Why it matters: The significant wealth gap in the U.S. between Black and white Americans is the direct result of slavery and systemic racism. Reparations as a potential solution to close that gap is highly divisive, but in motion.

The police killing of George Floyd and subsequent global social movement, along with the creation of Juneteenth as a federal holiday, has helped propel the conversation online.

By the numbers: There have been more than 91,000 tweets which mention “cashapp reparations,” “venmo reparations,” or “venmo cashapp reparations,” according to an Axios analysis of data from Keyhole, since the start of the year.

I sent one payment for every slave I have ever owned.

I don't believe that any currency can pay the restitution for the crimes of slavery in the U.S., that's why I have always been in favor of the restitution being paid by land ownership. The federal government suddenly changes it's tune when they can't just print on pieces of paper.

Are you doing your part?

Yes. I am encouraging individual responsibility by not making any reparation payments for an institution which myself, my parents, my grandparents, and my great grandparents had zero participation.

Chances are no one in your family tree participated in American slavery. My ancestors immigrated to this country well after slavery had ended.

That's one of the issue with cash reparations, we would be punishing families who were either not even here yet or families that sacrificed their own family members to fight against the Democrat Confederacy.

I did this as well.

And since my ancestors came here from Italy in the early 1900s well after slavery ended, I got a pretty good deal.

Does buying Jamaican food count?

Only if it's African-Jamaican-American food.

I never thought I'd see the day, but I actually miss time4fun's brand of crazy. The people trying to replace her are just too absurd.

It is pretty bad when anyone at all can make time4fun seem reasonable in comparison, but here we are.

You know damn well that reclaiming her RC belt isn't going to be easy at all, if not impossible at this point. Reported to Backlash.

Reparations refer to social/governmental/philanthropical programs and policies intended to compensate victims of war or serious human rights abuses. The UN has a whole policy and guidance on how (and when) it's supposed to be applied.

Reparations for slavery in the US CAN involve direct payment, but that's not what people are generally arguing for. And it's not from private citizens.

Removal of Confederate monuments is one example of reparations. Government programs to help improve access to education or home ownership would be another example.

Your silly question is like asking someone who wants to see taxes lowered how much of their taxes they refused to pay last year.

It's eliding social policy and individual behavior.
