I’ve been searching over as many medical/hospital sites as I can find, and the vast majority says it doesn’t help, only a few say it has shown to help with minor improvements but the side effects outweigh any of the benefits.

I think for his age, his health is about average for an American. He's overweight but I wouldn't call him obese, and has high cholesterol and some added risk of heart attack. That's pretty normal, or maybe even slightly better than average health for a 74 year old. I think he'll have the same chance of survival as any other man in his age bracket.

Assuming he survives, (which will happen unless he rolls a natural 1), he'll have to decide if his survival is a great victory or not.
