White nationalism-fueled violence is on the rise, but FBI is slow to call it domestic terrorism

When the feds choose not to classify attacks carried out by white nationalists as domestic terrorism, investigations into these crimes are stripped of resources.


The massacre that left at least 22 people dead and two dozen wounded Saturday in a city that hugs the U.S.-Mexico border will be treated as a domestic terrorism case, but many acts of white nationalism-fueled violence are not classified as such, stoking concerns that the government is not doing all it could to address an increasingly dangerous national security threat.

"There's no domestic terrorism law — we just treat it as either a hate crime or some other sort of criminal charge," said Clint Watts, a senior fellow at the Foreign Policy Research Institute. But white supremacists "are following an ideology the same way that other violent extremists that the U.S. designates as terrorists follow ideologies."


Investigators believe the man suspected of gunning down 22 people at an El Paso, Texas, Walmart Saturday posted an anti-immigrant screed on an anonymous extremist message board, citing the Christchurch, New Zealand, mosque shooter who left 51 dead in March, as an inspiration.


In April, a man suspected of opening fire at a San Diego synagogue, killing one person, also posted a note online that was almost identical to one written by the Christchurch shooter. The note, which was full of anti-Semitic language and lauded white supremacy, named the Christchurch shooter and the man accused of fatally shooting 11 people inside a Pittsburgh synagogue as inspirations for the attack.


And less than a week before Saturday's shooting, a 19-year-old man, suspected of killing three people at a Gilroy, California, food festival before killing himself, left a note on Instagram instructing followers to read a 19th-century white nationalist book.


Those attacks followed six worshipers killed at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin in 2012; three people gunned down at Jewish community center in Kansas in 2013; and nine slain at a black church in South Carolina in 2015.


Extremist-related murders spiked 35 percent from 2017 to 2018, "making them responsible for more deaths than in any year since 1995," according to the Anti-Defamation League (ADL). Last year, every one of those extremist-related murders was carried out by a right-wing extremist.


Meanwhile, white supremacist propaganda distribution nearly tripled from 2017 to 2018, according to the ADL, which also documented a rise in racist rallies and demonstrations.


According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, 2018 was also the fourth straight year of hate group growth, culminating in a 30 percent increase overall, "roughly coinciding" with President Donald Trump’s campaign and presidency.

The Justice Department is documenting the same trends. Hate crimes in the country increased by 17 percent from 2016 to 2017, marking the third straight year of a spike in hate crimes, according to an FBI report released last November. More than half of the hate crimes reported in 2017 were motivated by racial or ethnic bias, while anti-Semitic hate crimes jumped by 37 percent.

A 21-year-old attacker was no match for a 79-year-old north side man living with Parkinson’s. Mike Masterson was able to fight back and help police make an arrest.

Mike Masterson said he was jogging around 5 a.m. near the 2800 block of North Lake Shore Drive on Sept. 29 when police say 21-year-old Rokas Ablacinskas struck him in the back of the head with his fist.

Masterson, a career bartender, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s a couple of years ago. He said he makes a point to stay active, but when he was attacked by the 21-year-old, all that kept running through his head was this is “not how it was going to end.”

Masterson recalled the terrifying moments he was attacked by Ablacinskas in Lincoln Park.

“He kept saying ‘I’m going to kill you, I’m going to kill you,’” Masterson recollected. “My face is all scratched up. I got a lot of black and blue, but you should see the other guy.”

“He punched me in the face. I punched back,” Masterson said. “As soon as I got on top of him, I pushed his arms down, I got up, and started running. I went down to Diversey.”

The 79-year-old made it about one block in front an apartment building.

“He caught up with me because I run slow,” he said, stating the brawl continued until police arrived. “I’m 79, but I’m not a punk. I can handle myself a little bit. I can do 50 push ups.”

On Dec. 3, 2018, ICE lodged a detainer with the Cook County Jail on Rokas Ablacinskas, a 22-year-old citizen of Lithuania, following his arrest for attempted murder, aggravated battery of a victim over the age of 60 and aggravated battery in a public place. Without notifying ICE, the Cook County Jail released Ablacinskas Sept. 17, 2019, and he remains at large in the community.

Trump Administration First In History To Label A White Supremacist Group Terrorists

The Trump administration is now the first U.S. administration to label a white supremacist group a terrorist organization. The move, The New York Times notes, “could cut against criticism that the Trump administration has played down the threat of white nationalist violence for political reasons.” The group also happens to be pro-Russia.


The State Department’s counterterrorism coordinator, Ambassador Nathan Sales, underscored in a statement to the Times Monday that by naming a white nationalist group a “specially designated global terrorist organization,” the Trump administration is doing something “unprecedented.”

“These designations are unprecedented,” said Sales, as reported by the Times Monday. “This is the first time the United States has ever designated white supremacists as terrorists, and this illustrates how seriously this administration takes the white supremacist terrorist threat. We are doing things no previous administration has done to counter this threat.”

“The State Department’s designation for the organization, the Russian Imperial Movement, sets up the Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control to block any American property or assets belonging to the group,” the Times explains. “It will also bar Americans from financial dealings with the organization and make it easier to ban its members from traveling to the United States.” Three of the group’s leaders — Stanislav Anatolyevich Vorobyev, Denis Valliullovich Gariev and Nikolay Nikolayevich Trushchalov — are being labeled individually as terrorists, officials told the Times, a designation that includes additional sanctions.

Officials told the Times that the group is not believed to be sponsored by the Russian government, but that its actions have been “tolerated” by President Vladimir V. Putin and it has “helped advance the Russian government’s external goals by recruiting Russian fighters to aid pro-Russia separatists in eastern Ukraine.” The organization has also supported neo-Nazi organizations in Scandinavia, which follows a larger Russian government strategy of “sow[ing] chaos in Western democracies,” the paper adds.
