Trump's lawyers have told him that the law is "100 percent" on Trump's side that he won't have to release his tax returns to Congress. I heard several people on teevee cite the law, and I found it (http://uscode.house.gov/view.xhtml?req=(title:26%20section:6103%20edition: prelim)%20OR%20(granuleid:USC-prelim-title26-section6103)&f=treesort&edition=prelim&num=0&jumpTo=true). It's pasted below.
Here is how I predict it will play out. The IRS will have to release Trump's tax returns to the Congressional committee that requested them. Because the returns are specific to a particular taxpayer, it will be in an "executive session," which means closed door hearing of the committee. The fight will become about whether or not Trump has to leave a copy of the returns with the committee or if his lawyers can give the committee the returns to review for an hour in the executive session and then take them away. In addition, there is a problematic part at the end of the quoted law below about whistleblowers.
(f) Disclosure to Committees of Congress
(1) Committee on Ways and Means, Committee on Finance, and Joint Committee on Taxation
Upon written request from the chairman of the Committee on Ways and Means of the House of Representatives, the chairman of the Committee on Finance of the Senate, or the chairman of the Joint Committee on Taxation, the Secretary shall furnish such committee with any return or return information specified in such request, except that any return or return information which can be associated with, or otherwise identify, directly or indirectly, a particular taxpayer shall be furnished to such committee only when sitting in closed executive session unless such taxpayer otherwise consents in writing to such disclosure.
(2) Chief of Staff of Joint Committee on Taxation
Upon written request by the Chief of Staff of the Joint Committee on Taxation, the Secretary shall furnish him with any return or return information specified in such request. Such Chief of Staff may submit such return or return information to any committee described in paragraph (1), except that any return or return information which can be associated with, or otherwise identify, directly or indirectly, a particular taxpayer shall be furnished to such committee only when sitting in closed executive session unless such taxpayer otherwise consents in writing to such disclosure.
(3) Other committees
Pursuant to an action by, and upon written request by the chairman of, a committee of the Senate or the House of Representatives (other than a committee specified in paragraph (1)) specially authorized to inspect any return or return information by a resolution of the Senate or the House of Representatives or, in the case of a joint committee (other than the joint committee specified in paragraph (1)) by concurrent resolution, the Secretary shall furnish such committee, or a duly authorized and designated subcommittee thereof, sitting in closed executive session, with any return or return information which such resolution authorizes the committee or subcommittee to inspect. Any resolution described in this paragraph shall specify the purpose for which the return or return information is to be furnished and that such information cannot reasonably be obtained from any other source.
(4) Agents of committees and submission of information to Senate or House of Representatives
(A) Committees described in paragraph (1)
Any committee described in paragraph (1) or the Chief of Staff of the Joint Committee on Taxation shall have the authority, acting directly, or by or through such examiners or agents as the chairman of such committee or such chief of staff may designate or appoint, to inspect returns and return information at such time and in such manner as may be determined by such chairman or chief of staff. Any return or return information obtained by or on behalf of such committee pursuant to the provisions of this subsection may be submitted by the committee to the Senate or the House of Representatives, or to both. The Joint Committee on Taxation may also submit such return or return information to any other committee described in paragraph (1), except that any return or return information which can be associated with, or otherwise identify, directly or indirectly, a particular taxpayer shall be furnished to such committee only when sitting in closed executive session unless such taxpayer otherwise consents in writing to such disclosure.
(B) Other committees
Any committee or subcommittee described in paragraph (3) shall have the right, acting directly, or by or through no more than four examiners or agents, designated or appointed in writing in equal numbers by the chairman and ranking minority member of such committee or subcommittee, to inspect returns and return information at such time and in such manner as may be determined by such chairman and ranking minority member. Any return or return information obtained by or on behalf of such committee or subcommittee pursuant to the provisions of this subsection may be submitted by the committee to the Senate or the House of Representatives, or to both, except that any return or return information which can be associated with, or otherwise identify, directly or indirectly, a particular taxpayer, shall be furnished to the Senate or the House of Representatives only when sitting in closed executive session unless such taxpayer otherwise consents in writing to such disclosure.
(5) Disclosure by whistleblower
Any person who otherwise has or had access to any return or return information under this section may disclose such return or return information to a committee referred to in paragraph (1) or any individual authorized to receive or inspect information under paragraph (4)(A) if such person believes such return or return information may relate to possible misconduct, maladministration, or taxpayer abuse.

What I want to know, if you want to see tax returns, why only POTUS, why not EVERY ELECTED OFFICIAL ANYWHERE. How about that, maybe then you can explain to me how someone making 174K a year is worth 120 million dollars, that is Nancy Pelosis current estimated wealth.
I am going to be generous here and say that she earned her current speaker salary for her entire 31 years in congress and she put every penny she made into savings, and she earned a 10% return annually over the entire 31 years that she never spent a penny to live on, her adjusted net worth should only be about: $7,552,686.39. That's rough of course.
So before we go and worry about the returns of someone that made his money BEFORE he was an elected official, lets first look at people that amassed HUGE sums of money WHILE elected officials.

I understand the privacy issue. Past presidents have done so as a gesture, not because they had to. Trump said he would and didn't. Much like how all the other promises he made during his campaign have never materialized.

"Gestures" mean shit. Unless there is a law requiring a candidate to disclose his tax returns, then stop crying about it.
Trump has disclosed all the financial information that he is required to by law, which amounts to more information that you will get from his tax returns.
You're just upset because:
Trump won the election
Tax cuts
Growing economy
Wage increases
Deregulation
Obamacare mandate gone
Judges confirmed, especially Kavanaugh
No more NAFTA

Etc....
And I get it. But again, what specific information do you hope to gain by looking at Trump's tax returns and how does it pertain to being the President?

On the flip side of the coin. What have the democrats done in the past 8 years besides make up fictional boogie man tales, fuck up health insurance and try to steal a national election?
Trump has done better than I think anyone really expected. Personally I think his admin needs to focus on leveraging the economy against a coming downturn. Long term trends point to a pretty predictable down slide in 2-3 years.
Watched part of Yang's interview with Rogan the other night. He at least comes off as an intelligent person and seems to at least acknowledge that he has an understanding of how automation will quickly impact our society over the coming decade/s. Sadly, I don't think he will do some of the things that need to happen so we can adapt to those coming changes. I would totally support a $1,000 monthly "universal income" if it came along with a "homestead/small business act" and the privatizing of federal land........

During the debates, he admitted to paying very little in taxes "Because I'm smart". So not sure what else they hope to learn besides something he's already admitted. They just want to point out publicly, for the thousandth time, that he didn't and hasn't released them. That's all.

It shall furnish unless it can identify a particular person, in which case it can only be in a closed session, or if the person consents to it being in an open session. The back part is all about protecting privacy basically. If Trump doesn't want the public to see his tax returns, then the public will never see his tax returns. The Committee will.

Doesn't matter, Trump will probably take this to the courts before giving his tax returns to the committee. Privacy of tax returns are taken very seriously in this country and for good reason; they contain a lot of personal information including social security number, location of properties, wealth, etc, and since people for the most part voluntarily pay their taxes the last thing the government wants to do is to start releasing people's tax returns for no good reason and risk fucking everything up. This is why there are serious laws about tax returns and who can even view tax returns or the returns of certain individuals. Just think about what a hero an IRS employee would be to the entire left if they released all of Trump's tax returns, but that hasn't happened yet because we're talking serious prison time here for anyone who did that, not to mention his tax returns were probably only accessible to a few number of people to begin with and probably even fewer people once he started running for president.
Now sure, if Congress has a good reason for wanting to see Trump's returns then that's fine, but realistically their reason is "WE LOST IN 2016 AND IT'S NOT FAIR!!!" Not exactly a good reason. Sure they say it's because they think Trump has committed a crime and lied about his wealth and all of that bullshit, all based on the testimony of convicted liar Cohen. Does Congress really think the courts are going to be so stupid as to believe they are going to find evidence of crimes being committed when the IRS couldn't even though they have indeed been constantly auditing Trump's returns for several years in a row now. Sure the liberal courts will eat that shit up willingly with a spoon, but no way SCOTUS is.

Which is why the law has a privacy clause in it. He won't beat this in court, the law is over 80 years old.
The fact though, the only branch that can enforce anything is the Executive Branch. The IRS can drag their feet forever, say shit is lost, etc. The FBI has completely blown off subpoenas on more than one occasion.

Yeah but I don't think anyone has had any real reason to challenge it before. I think this law was created for one very specific scenario at the time and hasn't been used since, much less used to aid in a political attack.
Democrats will probably back off before it gets that far because they realize they will probably lose some of their powers if they push this too far.

It was created because two people were feuding over tax returns and one of them was the Secretary of the Treasury who had the power to look all up in them tax returns, but the other guy couldn't see his. So Congress put an end to that right quick.
The creation of the law was for just as petty reasons as there are right now.

Don't forget the 2020 election. The Democrats know that Trump has a good chance to win a second term (you wouldn't know that by listening to most news networks or late night comedy shows, but it's true). Democrats are looking for anything they can find to try to prevent that from happening.

That is already done and in far greater depth as each nominee is required BY LAW to fill out and submit.
Here's the thing though.. they don't care about that. They want to attempt to find something, anything in the tax returns that will embarrass the President.

It doesn't take legitimate concerns for stupid people to make loud noises about things. Trump's tax returns are probably fine, because if they weren't the IRS would flip the fuck out. Obama's birth certificate being released didn't stop idiots from poring over it to call it a fake for an entire decade. One piece of paper. 10 years of idiocy. Imagine how much stupid bullshit would come from what could be like a 300 page document, considering all of Trump's businesses.

The New York Times somehow obtained transcripts of Trump's tax returns for 1985 through 1994. The IRS releases anonymous statistics each year regarding high income taxpayers. Comparing Trump's tax information to the anonymous statistics shows that during that time period, Trump lost more money than any other person in the country.
https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2019/05/07/us/politics/donald-trump-taxes.html
The information came from someone who was legally entitled to have it. But you can bet that person wasn't legally entitled to give it to the Times. Will Trump try to find that person? Well, if it is fake news, then no crime was committed because, as we all know very well, it is not a crime to lie to the public and press. But if the leaked transcripts are true, then it was a crime.
What is a "transcript", you probably want to know. The IRS explains it at https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/how-to-get-tax-transcripts-and-copies-of-tax-returns-from-the-irs

Trump's tax returns from the 80s and 90s don't show what you're claiming. They show massive losses - extreme losses to the point where he claimed he lost more money than any other American during this time frame.
How does that translate to him paying more taxes than anyone else?

Actually the stupid argument is the one being made by democrats who want him removed from the 2020 ballots for not producing his tax returns which is not required at all and never has been.
I can without a doubt state that Trump has paid more in taxes than the vast majority of Americans. Just his property taxes alone dwarf that of the average citizen. But hey, 25 years ago............................................... ........................Clinton was banging the intern on the resolute desk.
