After that amazing public meeting among Trump, Schumer and Pelosi, it looks like we are going to have another shutdown this year..

It was just like in that movie Dave (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZARAldXlSyA), except there was no happy bipartisan applause at the end.

Why are you so scared of Mexicans?

Crime and drugs. Trump said it at his public meeting with Pelosi and Schumer today. Pence was there too, but he never got a chance to talk.

THE PRESIDENT: You know what I’ll say: Yes, if we don’t get what we want, one way or the other -- whether it’s through you, through a military, through anything you want to call -- I will shut down the government. Absolutely.

SENATE MINORITY LEADER SCHUMER: Okay. Fair enough. We disagree.

THE PRESIDENT: And I am proud -- and I’ll tell you what --

SENATE MINORITY LEADER SCHUMER: We disagree.

THE PRESIDENT: I am proud to shut down the government for border security, Chuck, because the people of this country don’t want criminals and people that have lots of problems and drugs pouring into our country. So I will take the mantle. I will be the one to shut it down. I’m not going to blame you for it. The last time you shut it down, it didn’t work. I will take the mantle of shutting down.

HOUSE SPEAKER-DESIGNATE PELOSI: That is (inaudible).

THE PRESIDENT: And I’m going to shut it down for border security.

SENATE MINORITY LEADER SCHUMER: But we believe you shouldn’t shut it down.

THE PRESIDENT: Okay. Thank you very much everybody. Thank you.

Good, shut it down. The wall needs to be funded.

Remind us, who did Trump claim was going to pay for the wall hundreds of times during the campaign? Was it the U.S. taxpayer?

And FYI, the wall isn't a conservative idea. It's the reactionary idea of a populist demagogue -- conservative groups oppose it.

Shartbringers says Trump should shut the government down putting hundreds of thousands of Americans out of work if we don't get funding to build a nearly 2000 mile wall along the US border with our ally Mexico.

I ask Shartbringer why he's scared of Mexicans.

The known racist Neveragain asks me how many illegals I have let into my home without background checks.

I ask the known racist Neveragain to explain what that has to do with my asking Shartbringer why he's scared of Mexicans.

You jump in and ask why I'm afraid of Americans? Your participation in this conversation and request is much like yourself. Irrelevant and out of place.

Essential services like police and hospitals aren't shut down. Social security, military payments, and stuff like that is still funded because that comes from a different fund. Pretty sure the IRS keeps working too.

Other than that all federal employees basically get a free paid vacation because once the government starts back up again they'll receive pay for all of the days they were furloughed, the only catch being they have to make do without receiving a paycheck until then.

I think a government shutdown is more psychological to people than anything else because "government shutdown" sounds ominous and they don't understand exactly what it entails

Also parks typically aren't closed during a government shutdown, that was just Obama's doing to make Republicans look bad. Why would a park or a veteran memorial need to be shut down just because the federal government is temporarily shut down? It's a park, it's not Fort Knox.

All unessential employees are asked to go home.

Here's a thought: If we literally have people doing jobs that are classified as "unessential", maybe do away with those jobs?

If a shutdown is necessary to protect the border, then we have no choice. People may have to do without WIC payments, TSA salaries and special prosecutors, but Trump should stand firm as long as necessary to get the wall, even if he has to hold out until the end of his term! It is a necessary sacrifice for the greater good.

The funny thing, it is a federal program, but it is administered by the individual states. It is on the states how they handle the payments incase of Government shutdown. They usually have a pretty large reserve to hold them over, so unless it is an exceedingly long shutdown, they generally aren't effected.

To preface, I think it's stupid that you let yourself get drawn into existential debates about what land ownership is in regards to the social contract. You're also referencing a wall China built to keep nomadic Mongolian tribes from torching their towns and murdering/raping/enslaving their people 1600 years ago as something even in the same universe as today's issues.

Stop that. It doesn't help you at all. Don't let people draw you off topic if you want to convey your points in a manner anyone takes seriously.

To the point, erasing a border and not protecting a border are the same thing. If you're for keeping borders, you're for keeping border protection. Whether that's done with a wall or not is the matter at hand, but if a border exists, protection on that border is necessary.

Oh and one more thing. My opinion on border security is two pronged, like a shitty fork.

1. The border does need increased protection in some form to prevent undocumented immigrants from continuing to cross as they have, creating an issue where there are a large number of undocumented people within the US.

2. The immigration system needs an overhaul to be far more streamlined and far less of a bureaucratic nightmare that takes years to get through.

I say offer current undocumented immigrants work visas that count towards citizenship as part of the naturalization process, much in the way Mexico does. Earmark those now documented immigrants as naturalizing, and funnel the taxes they pay into increased border security. That both documents the large number of undocumented currently living in the US, and lowers the ability for undocumented immigrants to arrive going forward.

Edit to add: Also that's kinda like Mexico paying for a wall, since it is largely Mexican nationals as undocumented immigrants we're talking about.

Want to make Mexico pay for the wall, simple, put a $1-5 tax on all wire transfers to places south of the border and island countries in the Caribbean and put tariffs on incoming goods from those countries equal to the amount needed to pay for welfare and social services from those countries for the illegals here and the cost of housing and deporting them back home. Should pay for the wall in under 2 years.

Tariffs don't work that way. It's a tax on an imported good, paid by the importer, not the exporter in those cases. We don't export enough to them to really put any sort of dent, with the possible exception of Mexico. Or frankly, import. We do exploit some south american countries, mainly for food imports, but taxing either import or export on that just exacerbates the situation for farmers and causes food prices to rise for the consumer, in both countries, which would cause more people to try to hop the border as the economic situation on the whole is worse starting off there. The reason it's a stick with China is because 500 billion worth of exports to the US is significantly dented by forcing US businesses to not deal with China or have to pay tariffs.

Putting tariffs on Mexico or Caribbean nations only taxes US companies/individuals buying from them. And it gives that money to the US Government. I thought you were in favor of small government, not big, bloated supertax government?
