For fucks sake, yet another ship collision with a civilian ship. Apparently it may have lost steering control or some such?
(CNN)Ten US Navy sailors are missing after a US Navy guided-missile destroyer collided with an oil tanker east of Singapore early Monday, the fourth accident in Asia waters involving a US warship in 2017.
The Navy's 7th Fleet said the USS John S. McCain collided with the merchant vessel Alnic MC while the destroyer was making its way to a port visit in Singapore. The collision was reported at 5:24 am local time, as the ship was passing near to the Malacca Strait, one of the world's most congested shipping routes.
A Navy official told CNN the McCain was fighting flooding in several places after sustaining damage to its aft port (rear left) side and that it had limited propulsion and electrical power. The Navy said the McCain was currently steaming under its own power to port.

From what I've heard, well, and I've seen a little, is the Navy is moving away from a lot of the formal schooling for its officers and is doing more OJT. Perhaps this isn't quite the way they need to go. I recall when I was on the USS Comstock back in 2009 there were a few Ensigns that were there for training purposes.
While this sounds good in theory, actually training on ships as opposed to classroom and simulated, quality of training will definitely vary by ship.

This is fucked up, wtf are these officers doing ?! Maybe instead of a fucking multi-billion dollar destroyer they should all get past mastering this:

This is the fourth collision in the past year for the Navy. All 4 of those ships are based out of Yokusuka Naval Base in Japan and the last 2 ships involved are part of the Destroyer Squad 15 / 7th fleet. Either their training is completely off or some nation state (China or Russia) is playing with some new cyber weapons.

I would bet more on the training issue. And honestly, sailors on deck or in the bridge with binoculars as well as some active radar should prevent nearly all such collisions. To me this is maleficence and neglect pure and simple. Also, when you get on a ship for a certain position, shouldn't you know that position?

Heads will roll today. Navy is executing a 24 hour operational pause. 7th fleet is about to get kicked in the teeth.

If it took damage to its aft port, then it's pretty likely that the tanker was the give-way vessel and the McCain was the stand-on, right?
Unless whomever was piloting the McCain through the strait did a really shitty overtaking job.
Either way, someone got complacent on the McCain; they were the more nimble vessel.

Captain should be demoted and put on latrine duty. Seriously, how does this happen on a bajillion dollar cutting edge warship even in the congested Malacca straits. I'm seriously afraid how these "officers" will do in actual combat.

Tankers take hours to turn; they are basically on rails like a train. This is the fault of the combat vessel.

I read a news report once about a naval destroyer arguing with another ship about who was supposed to move out of the way. The naval ship was very insistent that the other ship move because it had bigger guns and such but it turned out that the other ship wasn't a ship but a light house. I think it was reported by all the major news outlets.
True story.

It wasn't a true story. It has existed as nothing but a story for about 40 or 50 years.

Oh it's true alright. I saw it on the TV. Or a joke website. One or the other.

I think Greeks were telling that joke in 500 BC.

Well, heads, they are a rollin . . .
Head of 7th Fleet to be removed.

Of course leave it to CNN to show Trump's reply on a hurried question before he had even been briefed. Got to love that blatant bias.
