Federal labor leaders were ready when President Trump froze government hiring Monday. It was a campaign promise they criticized before the election and did so again shortly after he made good on the pledge.
“President Trump’s action will disrupt government programs and services that benefit everyone and actually increase taxpayer costs by forcing agencies to hire more expensive contractors to do work that civilian government employees are already doing for far less,” said American Federation of Government Employees President J. David Cox Sr. “This hiring freeze will mean longer lines at Social Security offices, fewer workplace safety inspections, less oversight of environmental polluters, and greater risk to our nation’s food supply and clean water systems.”

Most Presidents do this when they come into office for a time.

My wife is applying to the VA to backfill a pharmacy position due to retirements. Will she be affected? Keep in mind the VA has done several hiring freezes before anyone says "HURR DERR U SUPPORTED TRUMP NOW UR PAYING FOR IT!!"

Yes, she'll be effected. It is going to be temporary, though.

Using WAPO and Huffington post are probably not the best sources for unbiased news.
The dude here is basically saying the sky is falling because the Federal government needs to constantly grow. I really like the fear mongering at the end, OMG! your food and water is going to be poison now!

Is the VA and the military separate from one another? I'm asking because I don't know, I do know this excluded military.

I just used the first article that came up. Something to start the discussion.

Yeah, she'll have to redo it all. They'll close the vacancy and when they reopen it, it'll be a new vacancy.

Oh, I know. Fuck I wouldn't even know who to call an unbiased news source at this point. That's what has me worried more than anything.

There has never been an unbiased news source.

Pseudo job security for me, I guess? And yep, it just means more contractors.

The VA is its own department and has its own budget. By nature they do deal with the military a lot (records and such) and they hire a good amount of veterans. Some positions are actually vet only (some counseling positions can only be filled by vets who fill certain requirements).

I thought you worked on military base? Or does your funding come from elsewhere?

I work as a contractor on a military base. Our funding comes from a variety of sources. There are contractors, military, and government employees on post. With no new temp/perm positions opening up, it means more reliance on existing personnel and no new contractors until bids have been put in and what not.

I asked because the military is exempt from this. So not sure if this effects military research.

In a way it could, indirectly. Again it's good for contractors. If the military needs to do research for geospatial matters and NGA doesn't have the resources due to the freeze to go on loan contract scientists will fill that void.

The contract excluded the “military, public safety, and public health,” but during a signing in the Oval Office Trump only mentioned the military.
Depending on how that's interpreted, you're right that it should have a minor impact on where I work.
