Presidential contender Marco Rubio isn't laughing at all the chatter about his shiny black boots, saying the country should be focused instead on serious issues such as terrorism.

He told The Des Moines Register on Wednesday he was unaware of all the news headlines and passionate online debates this week about his footwear dubbed "high-heeled booties" on Tuesday by a rival's campaign aide.

Rubio shrugged and shook his head when the Register asked what he makes of all the attention on the fact that he was spotted Monday on the campaign trail, where rugged cowboy boots are more the norm, wearing ankle-height shoes with what appeared to be two-inch heels.

Marco Rubio's Republican rivals literally are hot on his heels, this time taking shots at the Florida senator for wearing shiny, black boots -- with a pumped-up heel -- that apparently only a fashionista can appreciate.

Rival campaigns including those of Carly Fiorina and Ted Cruz have teased him on Twitter over the boots, while fashion and political writers have spared no groan-worthy pun in describing them. Some have dubbed the craze over his fashion-forward choice "Bootgazi" or "shoegate."

Vanity Fair called it "statement footwear," while Cruz's communications director Rick Tyler tweeted: "A Vote for Marco Rubio Is a Vote for Men's High-Heeled Booties."

At a campaign stop in New Hampshire on Monday, Rubio appeared wearing incredibly fashionable, incredibly well-heeled black leather ankle boots that are sure to feed those rumors about his extravagant spending habits. The boots which we think are either these Giorgio Brutini boots or these Margiela ones look a lot like a pair favored by Styles, albeit with slightly less pilgrim flair.

Conveniently, that style is called a Cuban heel, because Marco Rubio is on-brand from head to toe (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cuban_heel).

"Let me get this right. ISIS is cutting people's heads off, setting people on fire in cages, Saudi Arabia and Iran on the verge of a war, the Chinese are landing airplanes on islands that they built and say belong to them and what are international waters and in some ways territorial waters, our economy is flat-lined, the stock market is falling apart, but boy are we getting a lot of coverage about a pair of boots," he said Thursday, grinning. "This is craziness. Have people lost their minds?"

Rubio was responding to a member of the audience who said he is still undecided during his rally in New Hampshire. The audience member said he was glad the Florida senator made "a better shoe choice today." (Rubio was not wearing the infamous boots.)

This is what I've been waiting on..
Trump weighed in on #bootiegate (https://twitter.com/hashtag/bootiegate). Trump went easy on Rubio.


"Well, I can't quite, I don't, you won't see me wearing them," Trump said on the The Howie Carr Show. "I don't know what to think of those boots."

"It helps to be tall," added Trump. "I don't know, they're big heels. They're big heels. I mean, those heels were really up there. But you know, it's almost like, it doesn't matter too much. Probably he would have been better off not going that route. Would you say? I noticed he's taken a lot of hits. I just hope it works out fine for him."
