View Full Version : Should we disable rep?

I don't really care about the rep system (in that I mostly get good rep and the red kind is just questioning my sexuality which is beyond reproach) but I've heard lots of horror stories; mostly from women, about the amount of abusive rep they get and how several of them want to quit or how new users have quit because of the disgusting things that get said to them as soon as they sign up and some of our lesser mouth-breathers realize they potentially have a uterus.

I realize this is the internet but I'm thinking it might be better if having an incredibly thick skin for anonymous abuse wasn't a requirement for posting here. I'm not saying you can't share your rape fantasies with whoever you might like, but at least you would have to attach a username to it and come under public scrutiny (or, you know, send them via PM).

Mods can spy rep so just do what Anticor said and report it. Then I'll stop pretending to be Drew rep-raping people.

I'm going to neg rep you my dirty thoughts.

Side note....Rep is retarded, and I would either say turn it off...Or turn on forced usernames.

It amazes me how many pathetic people take rep so serious, they remain anonymous for fear of what I assume is retaliation, against their own awesome green rep..Among other things.

I'd LOVE to see it force usernames personally, but i have my own reasons as to why I'd want that...This way Bob could stop leaving me those I see you from the bushes rep that irk me :(

I'm not a fan of the rep system at all. I can have nasty anonymous things said to me elsewhere on the internet.

I'd like it removed, but whatever. I just don't look at mine; that's easy enough.

Although this makes me think of one of reps good uses, usually the shadiest merchants have big red bars next to their name and no matter how much they protest or say rep doesn't matter, they deserve to have a warning next to their name.

Similar to the Japanese women who get groped on a crowded train but say nothing out of shame, people don't like to admit they are victims because it makes them victims in their minds.

I could see eliminating the comments. There's some value to the pos/neg aspect, (not much), but most of the comments mean very little that couldn't as easily be said in a PM if the person saying it feels that strongly about it.

I don't mind the rep system. Yeah, I get red rep and crazy shit like "go fuck a goat and die" which was my last one. I mostly ignore the red rep these days unless it's particularly funny but that's not too often.

But I think it would be hilarious to suddenly have usernames turned on. Friendships would be questioned.

I agree, but there are also other means as well to make a name known as a true shady bastard.

Case in point, Inspire/Kizun thread.

Not only that, shady merchants will still have neg rep, regardless. The issue mostly on these forums, is half the people that get neg rep, usually get it for really stupid dumb shit.

I really don't see how anonymous rep is any different than someone just making a fake account to abuse someone with. Not saying either should be tolerated or is okay, just seems like we would be trying to solve a problem that isn't really solvable.

It would be interesting if names were suddenly turned on for rep though. I know I've left some mean rep before (nothing as bad as wishing people would die like I've received or the rape comments someone alluded to earlier) and I honestly don't even remember who it was for or what I said. I can just see me logging in one day with a few private messages "What the fuck fucker?!"

Looking back at that death wish rep I received though I never knew who it was but actually rereading the thread it came from it's pretty obvious who it was. All I can say is men/women/whoever it was, what ya gonna do with them?

You make a compelling argument here. And with that I agree it is not cool to anonymously leave extremely offensive messages at someone's door. As a man I sympathize with the women on this board. I get some crazy ass reps so I can only imagine what the openly female posters of this board get.

What we have to ask is does the rep system actually bring any benefit to this PC community? I think Saladface proved that right off the bat when he enticed Kranar to give him 1,000,000 posts so his rep was worth more than everyone else. In fact, a thread was started for people to pos rep each other and went on for a long time.

The questions are much deeper than the mechanics of this board.

Should anonymous have a voice? If so how do you accept or deny that voice? If not how do you accept or deny the voice in your face? And it goes even further than that!

Hey that was me by the way. It was in response to you being rude on my thread, giving me the red rep "QQ Mor", and bringing up old shit. I'll own up to that. In all fairness that may or may not have been you, but I feel the need to retaliate for some reason. You just seemed like the likely person.

As to the rep system as a whole, everyone knows the whole thing is flawed. It's all in good fun. This is a forum after all and people are going to troll, spit hate, and say all sorts of effed up stuff. Take it with a grain of salt.

I like the rep, as it gives me a reason to laugh at yet more idiocy that I might not have otherwise had the pleasure to read.

I do think it should come with a mandatory username. If you feel strongly enough to comment and leave rep, you should be man/woman enough to take whatever backlash comes from your comments.

...new users have quit because of the disgusting things that get said to them as soon as they sign up...

Never thought about that. Nor do I know what adjusting rep will benefit in these regards.

So, people of the PC, when 1% of the time a new poster isn't a bot/manual solicitor, I suggest you immediately make that distinction. And then proceed to whatever Drew was talking about that I didn't was really paying attention to and quote ... about a uterus? I'll lie and say I'm gonna go back and read that.

But yes, placenta.

The difference is the effort it takes. I'd say requiring user names would eliminate a lot of the ridiculous rep and force those who really have nothing better to do to make fake accounts so that they can hide.

Unless of course, there really are that many people here who would actually waste their time to leave stupid comments anonymously.

I don't think anyone knows for sure who Clyder is but the latest guess is from Parkbandit who thinks he's Kranar. I'm having fun assuming Clyder is Kranar.

Either way Clyder is obviously an alt of someone on these forums so if someone takes the time to create a persona alt like Clyder I don't think it's a stretch some people would create alts just to leave 'anonymous' rep.

A clyder is a term used by males to discribe an overweight female, or fat chick (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=fat%20chick), clyders often gather together in groups called clydes. A clyder often has a rather nice slim attractive female friend who is known as the fondel (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=fondel)
Spencer: Shit man this party is filled with clyders.

It wasn't you mentioning the character I play that was rude, it is the fact that you continue to claim that I run around quoting said author in game which is ridiculous. You have no basis for such as accusations. Whether the rep was you or not wouldn't have done anything to change my comment. I just assumed that was you, but doesn't really matter either way. Honestly, it's mostly because it gets you so worked up. You've got this kind of immediate Kelso-esque "OW MY EYE!" reaction to it that's kind of fun for a few seconds. And it wasn't an attempt at intimidation. It was more of an insinuation that you're super-sensitive and you need to work on it.

I think the idea of bad rep and shady merchant/buyer should be separated. Rep can be a popularity contest, and that is what it is I suppose.

My idea would be to perhaps create a sticky of proven bad merchants/buyers that is updated and assessed by a moderator. Or better, a rep system only for when transactions are exchanged. Not sure if that is systematically feasible in a forum though.

Sylvan Dreams
02-15-2012, 10:48 PM
If someone wanted to go through the trouble, you could easily create a good/bad buyers and sellers list. I'm on a few message boards where one designated member maintains this list and updates it weekly.

I'm kind of leaning towards the preference of just removing comments from the rep system altogether. I wonder if that's even possible?

This. I'd really rather have comments than generic "like" buttons.

Second, Drew, you're not doing anyone any favors if you haven't told Anticor who got the offensive rep, along with whatever other information you might have to help him track it down.

Third, is someone here really that much of a sick fuck? I mean, I know we have some assholes, and they can say some pretty shitty things, but leaving rep for a random new girl that's awful enough to traumatize her? I can't even think of what someone could leave in rep that would upset me that much, let alone picture any of the guys here saying it.

I can say from experience that people will leave incredibly horrible/nasty/mean rep, that has nothing to do with the post..posted. I've had some very ugly rep comments left. I think people should be held accountable for thier opinions.

However, this opens up communication between people. OH nooooo back and forth reps between jerk off and dick wad 'cause one said something bad about the other. . . is it a solution or adding to the problem?

I have both good and bad comments. But considering the source of some of them, does it really matter? The skin starts thin, but if you hang around these boards long enough you get the thickness and grain of salt to go with it.

Yes, I would of loved to answer some of the dumber comments made, for example, the person who gave me shit for playing Telsas serving more then one Akarti among other stupid ass comments . . . but that would of opened up communication lines and is it really worth the extra headaches that might of started?

No matter how you do it, there is going to be abuse to the system. Accept, like, user name (Alt/false), and so on, can all be worked around. The solution starts with perhaps warning a new user that they are subject to some other peoples opinions of all types of diversity. . . including haters that just like to hate.

I've changed my mind after reading some of these responses.
Allowing personal attacks to populate and stay in someone's private control panel is just unfair. After hearing some of the accounts I imagine it's not very nice to experience and can be upsetting and off-putting for some users.
I feel most people who brush off the complaints are those (like myself) who don't receive that kind of rep.
And it does make sense to find most people who believe rep should stay are those with the most rep. Since it's clear they must have experienced a ton less negative, anonymous (or not anonymous) hate rep.

I really don't see what is so terrible about the anonymous rep system. If you can't handle the comments, then you can speak to anticor, or remove the post and thus remove the comment so you don't have to see it anymore.

Trying to be more constructive, what if there was instead a way to disable comments that each user had access to, similar to being able to see signatures/avatars?

I'm just saying, there are options to remove the comment without having to change the forum. I probably have some of the nastiest, snottiest reps, but the fact is - they're just words (or pictures in some cases... ew).

I'm not saying that words can't hurt people, or whatever - but I feel like there could be a way to opt out of rep, rather than subjecting the entire board to an overhaul.

A "report comment" button would be nifty - it could hide/delete the comment from the user's CP and send it along to Anticor in one convenient click. Given the fact that the boards and all their features are just generic options from whatever company supplies them however, I doubt we can magic up such a button. Given the fact that the boards and all their features are just generic options from whatever company supplies them however, I doubt we can magic up such a button. I don't get the reluctance to just tell him though. I doubt he'd be slow in figuring out who left the rep and banning them (or whatever other action was appropriate).

I like this solution.

What purpose does rep serve really though other than an opportunity to be an anonymous jerk. If you feel strongly enough about someone's post that you have to comment, post it in the thread and face the consequences.

I've left positive anonymous rep on several occasions. I've left comments for friends that are private, rude to someone else in the thread, or otherwise not fit for public consumption. I've left silly, off-topic comments that would just derail the thread. I've left completely unrelated rep, just because I thought of something I wanted to tell the person and clicking the rep button is easier than sending a PM. I've left an awful lot of empty green rep just to satisfy the stupid restriction about repping 20 people before going back to someone you left rep for previously. I've left a few anonymous negative comments, but far more often than not, if I care enough to click the red button I care enough to leave my name and/or post. It's the positive stuff that usually gets dumped in rep boxes. I also get absolutely hilarious rep from other people, a lot. I get a kick out of goofy things that wouldn't have been possible without the rep system (like the anonymous manicorn repper). There is far more to the system than an opportunity to be an anonymous jerk. I'd be pretty upset if it disappeared.

The rep system does nothing to tell anybody anything. All it has become is a semi-anonymous system to send somebody (usually negative) messages.

What would be far more useful (IMO) is a voting system per thread and per post with a simple up/down vote. That message is then given a colored background or header that signifies a post's 'popularity' along with the number of up & down votes for that post.

You are given a total "rep" score red or green based on the total number of up/down votes you receive. And that's displayed in the same place, but as a total number.

Of course I realize that I've just described Reddit, and if I had my druthers we'd just send everybody who posts here to /r/GSPlayers or /r/GemstoneIV/ (http://www.reddit.com/r/GemstoneIV/) or something and be done with vBulletin. I'm sure that's just a pipe-dream, but it'd be nice.

Think we're concerned about the shooter, not the gun here. I think that person has a great point to make. If the rep system was always signed, I think it'd mean more.

Anyone can "anonymously" give credit or discredit someone. However no one understands how credible that source is because its "anonymous". Now if that person has a positive rep from you saying -- "Great Transaction, would do business again. -AnticorRifling" that would definitely carry more value in my book because the rep has a source.

I think you're confusing the rep system with public feedback on ebay. No one sees rep, unless you choose to repost a comment someone left you. The comments are private, so who they come from is totally irrelevant in the sense you described above. Only their content matters, and that only to you personally. The red/green boxes next to your name are public, but those are affected by who left the rep. People with higher rep have more clout, and thus more effect on the boxes.

Either way I'm not losing sleep over it and if tearing others down is how you build yourself up, have at it. To each his own.

Though a more important question, and this is one for the mods I guess.

Is the weighting equal for positive and negative rep? It seemed to me my first neg rep hit was a hard one even though I had had positive rep before that. It would kind of suck if one red mark cancels out two green marks..etc, etc.

Anyone know?

The number of points you give for positive rep is affected by how long you've been a member, your post count, and how many points you currently have for rep. People did some research into it in the beginning, but I don't remember what the results were exactly. Post count and current rep count for far more than length of time - Celephais with his artificially inflated million posts has a huge e-wang to swing around.

The number of points you take away for negative rep is half the number you'd give for positive. What happened to you was likely a few green reps from people with little rep themselves, then one negative comment from someone with a lot more rep/more posts.

I have to side with the no change people. Is it frustrating that there are people who do not sign their rep? Yes. At the end of the day does it really matter? No.

As much grief as I get on this board its a wonder my rep is solid green. Then again, I couldn't give two shits about some people's opinions.

I am an art school student of Corcoran in DC. Our classes included regular critiques. We were all given projects that we of course tried our hardest to come up with the best and brightest ideas we could imagine. Then we took turns displaying these ideas to our entire class.

If you are going to be bold and submit your opinions/self/work to the public you need to be prepared to take the criticism that comes with it good and bad.

In class you could see the person criticizing you and confront them face to face... but there was no cause for retaliation because the activity was encouraged as a learning experience. That you were put before a group of critics gave the people in that group a certain amount of anonymity.

I know I am better for that experience.

Am I better from the neg rep I get here? Fuck no. Neg repper who don't sign are haters and haters never win!

It just sounds like you all stand toe-to-toe like boxers, circle each other, and just punch and that's it. Or you guys are acting like this is Fight Club where you beat each other up but have the honor of not disabling or crippling someone. If half those people simple broke the other guys arm or crushed their knee, they wouldn't be all bruised and black and blue as it would have been an easy fight, lol. Anyhow, does anyone wanna describe themselves in a simulated fight?

Well with me, there's no trading blow for blow. I don't fight like a boxer. I tend to rush in right away to disable the person's ability to throw punches since that's the most common way of fighting. If the person is lucky, they'll get one hit in when I rush but they usually don't since they react slow or I deflect the hit. I tend to rush in with my head tilted down (kind of like Cesaer Chavez) so the only way to hit me would be a hook as you would have to have lightning reflexes to get an uppercut off and any other type of hit would hurt like hell hitting my head and not my face. So that's mainly for protection.

And as I rush in, I have my hands moving around in a slapping motion (kind of like Steven Seagal does) as it's a defensive form for any oncoming blows which makes it even harder to get a hook off. You simply slap away the punch so they either miss big time and fly past or when it does hit, it's slides off like a boxer's vaselined up body. Also with the slapping and swiping motions, depending on the distance between the both of us, it gives me a chance to make a grab to grip the wrist of the hand that's throwing the punch in which case I lock up their wrist or whole arm and can then throw a few blows to their face or stomach for some one-armed fighting, force the guy down to the ground, break the arm if I hate the guy, or release and kick him in the butt to send him running forward head-first to the ground (to get a laugh, heh). Or if we're closer, I move in behind them and I lock up both their arms and wrap one of my legs around one of theirs to take them down so they fall face down, and then I go to town on them.

And then for a guy much bigger than me, I simply just kick them in the knee so it bends inwards and breaks. Or if they reacted to it, it won't break but it'll still hurt and make them come down in a half-buckle. And once they lower their body from the hit, I make a swiping, angled hook so my knuckle connects to their temple which will usually knock them out and if not, I do it again.

But of course, that's all just an example of what usually happens. Things are/can be different depending on various factors but that's how a fight usually is with me since most people tend to fight the same way.

So what's a fight normally like for everyone else? Do you mainly box like little homies and kick people once they're down, look for the nearest blunt/sharp object to use, do you rush in and wrestle or grapple, know an offensive/defensive discipline, go berserk and just start swinging madly, lol, or what? lol

lol

Alternate response: this is why I couldn't go out with you to smoke, because of the brimming urge to mete out berserk violence on any and all challengers. Also because smoke makes me cry.

Finally, Jay, M&G was the place that had soccer on, right? I liked that place a lot better than the other place.

I say keep the rep system. I have/do sign most of my neg reps and my positive ones. Ones I leave without it usually has to do with someone who has complained in the past that they get too many anon reps.

There are other ways to track merchant feedback, such as the heatware link in my signature. It just requires people to use a different system.

I don't know what Anticor has access to such as the hosting platform or if its just admin like access to the tools of Vbulletin, but to really make changes for rep to be more functional it would require an admin that is active and willing to make upgrades/updates.

I don't think we have one right now.

At least someone's getting rude rep in this thread. I really expected at least one of my posts saying, "people can't really be leaving rep that bad" would get someone to accept the challenge. Nope. Not a single red box, and my Friday entertainment is ruined.

Okay... I now understand how someone could be so disturbed by a rep that they'd flee the PC. I'm seriously considering fleeing my own house, given the source of the rep.

No way. It's far too entertaining to turn off. Rep serves no real purpose effectively, but the entertainment factor of the "respond to reps" thread is reason enough to keep it.

I don't really care about the rep system .... but I've heard lots of horror stories;

To be perfectly honest, the comments that stem from genuine interactions - be they good bad or indifferent - are often valuable. It's the people who use it as an opportunity to make abusive comments, often in acronym form, for no other reason - presumably - than boredom, antisocial tendancies or some innate inidiocy, who lesson the beneficial impact of the rep system.

Luckily I got the heads up about the system soon after joinging PC, so after reading the first 'stfu' and 'die in a fire' comment, (charming...quite charming) I just stopped looking at it. :nono:

I continue to make positive comments myself though. It's a great way of saying thankyou to some fantastic folk, although that could just as easily be achieved in the thread I guess. To date, I've not had cause to post any negative comments. (I really don't have the energy for retaliatory negative comments. My lifes far too short for that crap)

My vote? Retain the system. Why throw the baby out with the bathwater?

I know I'm probably going to get badrepped here because I seem to have a rep stalker that goes out of his or her way to be a jackass. Most of my red rep comes from people who just have some stupid reason to hate me, it has nothing to do with how I merchant. A great amount of people who HAVE bought things from me are often pleased with the interaction, and all the hater red rep kinda makes me look like a shoddy merchant when I'm not.
