On the one hand, I'm an idiot for accidentally learning all my ranger spells at once. On the other hand, I'm AWESOME for learning all my ranger spells at once! Below is a (long) series of thorns cast with 202 ranger spells and 101 summoning lore, with one or two fury casts at the bottom (I'll get some more of those later). These are pretty much unedited, meaning I didn't cut out the "bad" thorns to make it look better, just a few that were cast at already prone, near-death targets. This was just the first run, so stay tuned for more posts.

Some things I've noticed about spike thorn:

The generic damage (the first number of each damage cycle) can vary widely; the same cast can have one cycle that does 10 damage and another that does 30. Crit damage, however, occurs within a very narrow range. For any given cast of 616, the crit rank of any two cycles will not differ by more than 2. In other words, there's an initial roll to determine the base crit rank for that cast, then for each cycle, the inflicted crit rank = base crit rank +/-1.

Furthermore, spike thorn handles crit damage differently than your standard combat puncture crits. The vast majority of the time, crit damage = crit rank * 5. I've never seen any crit damage below that, but I have seen crit damage above it. What determines whether or not extra crit damage is done I have yet to investigate. This is better damage than standard puncture crits. Interestingly, rank 9 crits to the chest or back, which should be 45 damage for spike thorn according the the formula, in fact do 50 damage--the standard damage for combat puncture crits.

If I think of anything else, I'll add it.

This was actually the big bummer of this training path. It turns out the benefits of both 613 and 618 are capped at level, so my DS isn't anywhere near what I had hoped.

What is it though, and do you plan on fixskilling to get some MnS or are you going to stay all ranger base? I am very interested in this idea.

I don't know off hand, but I think now is a very poor time to use my DS as a standard. At the same time I made the points available for 202 spell ranks, I also fixskilled to an archery build. A mediocre archery build. I had to drop a lot of things, including some dodge, to get enough points for the spells. I will say that I get something like 63 DS from 613 and 102 dodge ranks from 618.

As for spells, yes, I plan to fixskill back into 30 or 40 minor spirit spells while leaving the rest in the ranger circle. But I'm pretty sure I'll remain 2x spells, at least for a while.

If you want some help testing, I can send you just about unlimited mana and provide spells from cleric and mage if you want to do some longer tests.

Thanks. I think I'm good, though. I've been getting a good 50 spike thorn samples from each hunt and could probably do more. Surprisingly, mana hasn't been an issue with 1x HP, 30 SMC, 163 stamina and a few stamina recovery enhancives for sigil of power. I've also found 3 second aimed shots with a longbow to be an effective way to finish off those I don't want to waste another thorn on.

What I'd really like is Nelemar to be empty of PCs so I could just go wild with 635.

Ladrial was a Sister of the Blight, and wanted to turn the lands into a wasteland to grow her flowers. She was the one that caused those huge invasions of diseased and slimy shit a few back. It was an off-shoot of the Nature's Fury release.

While we're on the topic, could someone explain why ranger TD is so much lower than say, minor spirit TD? Is there just some kind of huge pushdown or something?

Yeah, exactly that. The planners figured that if they made ranger CS spells go against your average spirit TD, it'd be totally pointless to give us a CS spell in the first place. There's a 10 level pushdown or something.

With all that summoning lore you could make some awesome rods. Though thats kind of pointless now that its hard to fill base rods anyways. Was thinking you could make 120 rods with 4 charges.

Darn tootin'. The wizards I've had imbed for me haven't had any problems with ranger rods. I hear 120 is very difficult, though. If you or another really experienced sorcerer is on Teras, I'd love to do an imbed session with you. I'll provide the rods and mana.

Actually, I ran the numbers for this yesterday and realized that even if I optimized my spells for ranger CS, it would only rise by 4.


Primary spell circle bonus: (round normally)
Ranks up to level: 1CS/rank
Ranks 1-20 above level: .75CS/rank
Ranks 21-60 above level: .5CS/rank
Ranks 61-100 above level: .25CS/rank
Ranks 101 -? above level: .125CS/rank

Secondary circle bonuses:
Ranks up to 2/3 level: .33333CS/rank (round up)
Ranks above 2/3 level: .1CS/rank

Obviously, you'd want to do the main circle up to 160. However, for those last 42 ranks we're looking at 42*0.25=10.5 vs. 42*0.33=13.86. The difference is quite trivial.

That being said, I do plan to fixskill into 30 or 40 minor spirit ranks.

What was the reason to not use a runestaff? Use the extra TP for harness power and summoning lore and maybe have a better DS? Whats your magical ranks/level at now?

I had a few reasons for trying ranged along with the pure build. For one, I wanted to see what all the hullabaloo was about, since I've been complaining about archery for a while now. Two, I can fire an aimed longbow shot in 3 seconds, self-spelled. Three, I didn't want to be entirely reliant on spells and mana supply to hunt, particularly as someone who does a lot of warcamps. Four, ranged is actually incredibly TP efficient, especially when compared to magical skill training costs for rangers. But most importantly, I did it because I could.

I'm currently at 4.89 magical ranks per level.

That's an incredible TD to have against ranger CS. Although not surprising Mekthros had it, that guy scroll tanked like nobodies business. He probably put you to shame Evarin.

That's his spiritual TD. When rangers cast 635 on players it will use spiritual TD.

Similarly, when bards cast 1030 on players, it uses elemental TD.

Only creatures have their TD modified.

It is what it is.

You should drop that CM, Droit. What are you getting that is worthwhile with that many spells and archery? Those TPs could be better used elsewhere. Like Dodge.

I do CARRY every spell but I don't wear always them. Mekthros had the nasty habit of having everyone trying to kill him, though. I still don't believe I can wear every spell I own in a spellburst environment. You still pop yourself.

What's the min for disarm? That might be the way to go. If you want to prone something, spike it. The generic CMAN defense for just training in CM is terrible. Unless you're training in a maneuver it takes like +10 ranks to add 1 point to your defense. Makes a difference when you're fully 2xed, but like .4x? Not much.

Helps a bit for maneuvers, I suppose, but you have Mobility.

You point about CM defense is the whole point in why he is training in those skills. The only way to be protected against disarm is to have 4 or 5 disarm ranks. Also executioners in the Temple sweep and likewise you would need 4 or 5 ranks to defend that most of the time.

It's 45 points to master most CMs for rangers, hence the 90 ranks. I don't think I'll be getting rid of em, either, because I honestly need all the defense I can get. DS can be gained from other methods, but CM defense boosters are very limited. Mobility may help a bunch with critter maneuvers, but it only adds +5 CM defense.

with his 470 CS, he actually has more of a warding margin vs. creatures than I do with a maxed Bardic CS of 522.

It's not by much, about 10 points or so depending on the creature, but I'm optimized for CS and have +50 from 425 and +30 Aura bonus whereas he doesn't have a WIS modifier being a giantman and only has +25.

That's an interesting point ... Droit, round up +30 in WIS enhancives, or +10 with a quartz orb and Owl, and you can hit +500. You could even theoretically hit +520, with maxed Wis.

I'm thinking about what to get on my AG badge. I'm considering some combination of the following: +5 WIS bonus, +10 ranged bonus, +10 mana recovery, +10 dodge bonus, +10 stamina recovery. Are there some obvious ones I'm missing?

I would definitely get the +5 wisdom bonus, but I do think the stamina/mana recoveries go higher than +10. If they don't, then I DO know you can get more to the overall stat in general.

The +20 to your mana/stamina is what I meant. I don't think +20 to mana is worth it, but +20 to stamina as a GoS'r is probably a damn good deal.

I would get +5 Wis Bonus, +20 Stamina, +10 Stamina recovery.

But then again I am a wracking junkie, so it only makes sense I would try to max out the benefits to Wracking Lite.

Min/Maxing is fun, but I really think for this build to be all around viable it is best to go with 130/672. The CS lost can be regained via Enhancives to the ranger's prime stats.

140 is pointless. Ruby amulets can be duped AND charged. All you're getting is a bit more DS and duration from 102/120. Not worth it to lose out on all that rangerly goodness. 130 and 125 are nice spells though.

I agree. I really wanted to test the full potential of spike thorn, but I don't think I'm nearly as viable as I could be right now. Sometime in the near future, I plan to use a fixskill to rearrange a few spells and skills. I think what I'll do is to drop ranger spells to 160 and pick up 30 minor spirit. The TPs from the remaining 12 spells will be used to put me back into augmented chain, learn 25 ranks of dodge, and bump my perception by a few ranks. Doing this will boost my DS and overall survivability by a ton.

But just as a note, my CS should stay the same even though I'm losing 12 total spell ranks, thanks to the way secondary circles affect primary circle CS.

If you're aiming to be a caster ranger you should consider staying in leather or brig. I had Barachado very spell heavy and even the hindrance of Brig annoyed me when I spell-hunted.

Yep. Surprisingly, mana hasn't been an issue at all. Sigil of power is proving to be an excellent way to maintain a steady stream of mana throughout an entire hunt. Wearing only 1 stamina recovery enhancive, I regen 52 stamina per minute. That's equivalent to increasing my mana regeneration by +50. I also put up sigil of concentration before I go out, so it's effectively +55 mana regen. I can maintain that with only +5 stamina recovery. If I'm really running low, I can wear up to +40 or +50 stamina recovery, in which case I will be recovering about 130 stamina per minute, which converts to 130 mana per pulse. It helps that my thorns are about 75% fatal on anything but elementals and defenders, too.

Now that I've had my fun, it's time to start thinking about my final build. Pasted below are my current skills, with my planned skills in bold. Basically, I'm going to drop ranger to 160, pump minor spirit to 30 and use the TPs from the last 12 spells to get back into augmented chain, bring dodging to 1x, get a few ranks of MIU, and learn as much perception as I can with the remainder. Any thoughts?

People killed her every so often (Calean did it at least 5 times), but she just came back to life. The storyline eventually ended when people found her "roots" and destroyed them. I don't think there was any prize for it, other than fun RP. I didn't make the end of it, though, so I couldn't tell you.

I never saw anyone kill her personally. Bitch was a hard target. Most the time you would cast at her and your spell would just fizzle against a green barrier or something.

So I was thinking of popping my ranger over to a pure build with my current fixskills before the new one. Looking for opinions:

Armor? Currently have 70 ranks for my 7x hcp augmented chain. I do have some 7x brig that will hopefully get improved at CCF, is the drop down in asg worthwhile?

Weapon? I think my best options are to keep 2x ranged, or to go 1x shield/brawl. Shield/brawl would presumably offer more DS, at the expense of not being able to reliably use a weapon. Voln fu would still be viable though (not that there are any dead at my level range anyway).

Dodge? Phantom ranks from 618, 911, and otherwise being spelltanked up the wazoo leads me to think I could afford to drop this all together. I'll be hunting in defensive anyway, and be using a shield(?).

Some things to keep in mind:
I MA like a motherfucker (wizard/bard/cleric/ranger team) so mana won't be an issue. Also, I don't really need a weapon to finish things off. level 63.

Possible build:
35 armor - brig
1x shield
1x brawl
24 pt
30 AS
30 MIU
63 HP
24 smc
1x summoning lore
20 MnS
88 ranger
15 climbing
10 swimming
30 perception

This leaves me with 5 ptp with my current TP allocation.

Key points being 1x summoning lore and +25 ranger ranks.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

My first thought is that you'll be gimping yourself defensively. Losing 1x dodge and 1x worth of parrying adds up to a lot of DS. Keep in mind that DS bonus from 613 and dodge ranks from 618 are capped at level. A wizard spellup + dims isn't going to compensate for that. I'd try to stay .5-.75x in dodge at the very least. I don't know how ranged DS is calculated well enough to tell you how 1x shield/brawl DS will compare to 2x ranged DS.

Also, I don't recommend dropping your armor to brig. The hits you take will hurt a lot more than you're used to, especially with a lower DS. I tried it and switched back to aug chain as soon as I could. Of course, TPs are a lot tighter for you, so you might have to.

All that being said, it's worth a shot. MAing will definitely make things a ton easier, though I don't think he'd be viable on his own. My gut feeling is that you're still a bit too low-level to go pure ranger, but I'd love to see you prove me wrong.

MAing with a bard and cleric your AS/DS should be awesome. Don't forget about 307 310 Droit. You should have a weapon IMO if you hunt with a bard and cleric. Take advantage of 307 1007 AS boosts.

307 caps at what, +15 DS? Dropping 63 ranks of dodge loses you ~70 DS in guarded stance (assuming average stats and a medium shield). Being 1x weapon skill at that level vs. being 2x loses you another ~40 DS in guarded. That's a lot of DS.

Good stuff, thanks for the input. What's a good target level for spell ranks that I should aim for? Would I be ok with 1x ranger ranks? +10? Dropping spell ranks obviously frees up tons of points. If I do go with a weapon I'd probably go to edged since it's cheaper than brawling. I've got a sexy 7x bastard axe I could finally put to use. I do love my chain, too. How about summoning lore? Do I really need to 1x? 60 ranks would net me a 50% chance at a second strike, that would seem like a decent goal (at 20ptp a rank, that saves me 80ptp, or another spell rank). 60% chance at a 2nd extra cycle for 635, too.

With that, we have:
70 armor
1x shield
2x edged
24 ptp
.5x dodge
30 AS/MIU
1x hp
24 SMC
20 MnS
70 Ranger
60 Summoning lore
15 climbing
10 swimming
.5x survival

My only concern here is that I have no room for CM, and it's a small concern at that. Between 606/509/307/1007 I should be fine. Not to mention the 7x weapon, and 211/215 when I need it.

DS isn't really a concern, as it stands like level can't even touch me 99% of the time. And I'll be gaining 120, which I didn't have before, and using a shield. It's either .5x dodging, or 8 more spell ranks, though, and I figure the benefit from dodge will outweigh those spell ranks.

Thoughts on v2?

That looks much better, defensively. I think that'd work well. Your AS will be mediocre for just open attacking with a one handed weapon, but you should only be using it to finish off things that are near death anyway.

I could go pull some shots of thorn and fury (my natural CS is 470, by the way), but I already have some posted. Just to describe my experience with thorn, I'd say I kill dissemblers, sirens, executioners, radicals, and combatants with 1 cast of 616 the majority of the time (75%+). Defenders invariably take 2 casts. Sentries usually take 2 casts, though maybe 10-20% of the time I one-shot them. For elementals, I usually use my bow with a couple casts of 616.

Yeah, I was amazed at how much easier sentries died when I added 35 ranks of ranger spells. They don't die as quickly as your casts, but pretty darn close. With an extra 64 spell ranks, we only get an extra 10 CS? Ew.

I really wish we could double lores.

I would love to know how the NPC had such a high ranger CS tho! Is that even possible for us?

A dark elf or forest gnome ranger with 160 Ranger spells and 42 MnS (optimized) would have a ranger CS of 478 or 479. Owl could add another 16, assuming 90 blessing lore ranks, plus 10 from a quartz orb = 504 or 505. Counting enhancives, you could get another 4 CS from +8 WIS (owl's +32 counts against the enhancive limit), bringing the grand total to 508 or 509 maximum ranger CS achievable by a player character. The greater spirit focus crystal does add 25 on top of that, but the bonus only counts for the first target of 635, not for the entire cast.

Originally, yes. I knew PT factored into a lot of other rolls, too, but it wasn't until recently that we found out that PT is the primary critter maneuver defense skill. I'm pretty untouchable by standard maneuvers these days.

The AP reductions are based on the RT threshold of the armor, not the maneuver or spell hindrance ones. The RT threshold for aug chain is 50 ranks, so you get the first AP reduction at 100.

Given what Coase has said about the SMR (Standard Maneuver Roll) I would say yes. Maybe not for going to 200 ranks (third reduction) but certainly at 100 ranks for the first reduction.

I'd say the first AP reduction is definitely worth it because you're only paying 1x costs for armor use. It was recently revealed that armor penalty is in fact a huge factor in maneuver defense. Each point of armor penalty is equivalent to 3 ranks of physical fitness, which is the primary maneuver defense skill. Once I get some more pressing training needs out of the way, I'll definitely be going to at least 150 ranks of armor.

EDIT: If you're not yet 2x PF, put your points into that first. Armor use is really only efficient once you've maxed out your PF.

What Dan said. You actually have better maneuver defense than ever. Mestys also recently revealed that 618 has an uncapped bonus to maneuver defense, meaning that folks like me and you who are very overtrained in the ranger circle are getting some serious benefits from 618.

There's a difference between the standard maneuver roll (SMR) and CMANs. Charge and tackle and bullrush are all CMANs, whereas things like the roa'ter burrow is an SMR. PF and 618 and armor penalty really only apply to the SMR, so they don't help much with CMAN defense, if that's what's getting you. I don't think the horn fear attacks in the temple are SMRs, though; they're probably more related to warcries than anything else.

You have to figure that stats and level factor into things too. Perhaps the defender's armor comes into play as well.

I almost feel bad responding to this, as clearly this person is as dumb as a chipped brick. One's level and Stats are both factors into the CMAN equation, both on the attacker and defender's end. Armor also plays a roll in the equation, likely on both ends. Exactly how these factors play a part, and to what extent is what is unknown. For further reading, I suggest you start by repeating the fourth grade.
