Their economy is growing at the slowest rate in decades, their exports are down (they are an export economy so this is a big deal), they have been pumping money into the economy to boost their economy via consumer spending and this has had little impact, businesses are closing down because they can no longer afford to stay in business, citizens are doing bank runs which has led to several banks being closed down, some large companies are moving out of China and to other countries to avoid the US tariffs, and investments in China have slowed down dramatically because again of the US tariffs.

You ain't gonna give Hong Kong credit for all of that or even a large portion of that.

The trade war with the US is clearly having no effect on the US and certainly isn't helping their country. Of course it’s having a factor and a giant impact, the Chinese just aren’t able to hide their struggles like they were able to before... but the trade deal isn’t the cause of suffering. That’s the only point I’m getting at.
The Chinese economy has been suffering for about 10 years now.

Edited: They aren’t desperate for a trade deal because their economy isn’t suffering without one. It was suffering before, now and it will still suffer afterwards. A trade deal won’t change that.
