Guns being seized due to Irma

Kinda baffling.

The governor of the U.S. Virgin Islands has ordered the territory's national guard to begin seizing guns and ammunition from citizens in preparation for Hurricane Irma's landfall.

In an executive order signed Monday, Gov. Kenneth Mapp instructed Adjutant General Deborah Howell "to take whatever actions she considers necessary to carry out the assigned mission" of maintaining and restoring public order.

"The Adjutant General is authorized and directed to seize arms, ammunition, explosives, incendiary material and any other property that may be required by the military forces for the performance of this emergency mission," the governor said in the order.

The order went into effect Tuesday at 12:01 a.m.

Located about 40 miles east of Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands consist mainly of St. Croix, St. John and St. Thomas islands. The territory has a population of more than 100,000 residents.

As of midday Tuesday, the forecast track of Irma would take the powerful cyclone just north of the islands, with the most intense effects of the storm occurring early Wednesday morning. Irma's winds are forecast at that time to be about 175 m.p.h.

"This is not an opportunity to go outside and try to have fun with a hurricane," Mapp told ABC News. "It's not time to get on a surfboard."

There are still background checks done. I really don't think after they are finished with them it's all just thrown away. It's not exactly registration but I'm sure there's a database somewhere of who bought what. That's how it is in FL at least. Quick BG check for long guns (5-10 minutes) or a 3 day cooling off period if you don't have a concealed carry permit for pistols. Speaking of concealed carry, they have a list of who has one. Wouldn't be a stretch for them to be seen first.

The wait only comes if you are flagged. It means you are being further screened, can happen with any type of weapon.

In FL it's a 3 day wait without a concealed carry permit for any handgun. In 16 years, I've had to wait for the 3 day deal every time I've bought a pistol and that was more than a few times. The checks might be, but I'm willing to bet that little oh he bought what is in some sort of database. Actually, I know it is. I had a pistol stolen some years back and while we don't have gun registration, I filed a police report so if it was used in a crime I would not be found liable. There's a database of stolen guns which tells me there's a database of who bought which gun with what serial number.

Honestly, the 3 day wait for a pistol makes me laugh. "You might be mad at someone so we'll let ya chill out before giving you a pistol, but here take an AR-15 or AK-47 right now with a few 30 round mags." I get pistols are more concealable but seriously with that firepower...

To be fair though aren't most gun murders committed with hand guns? People only use AK-47s for deer hunting.
