Did anyone else climb up on the landing side but then have the spidersilk rope dump you in Pinefar? I thought it was a bit odd a polar bear was walking around Dragonsclaw until I noticed where I actually was.

I went up the EN side when that happened.. Such a long walk back..

Am I right to assume that doing so with a character below cap is certain death? Or can characters of any level help out, as it were, without being slaughtered?

Initially there were a few groups of enemies that showed up but there have been a few hours in between of those. I would think you would be fine
