Edit: Also just want to point out... when someone came to me asking for advice about getting more involved, I think literally the second thing I said was a fair warning that if they wanted to be more visible, they needed to know that they'd be taking the bad with the good and should be prepared to either get killed, kidnapped, cursed, framed, or have any other number of other crazy things happen out of nowhere. That person was very enthusiastic about any of those things happening, which I think is the right attitude!

What exactly happened leading up to you getting thrown in the stocks and bolted? Be specific.

I'm going to guess what didn't happen was something like:

Hlendril says, "Hear ye, <insert a bunch of RP speak>"

GM NPC: OMG WUT A FAG LOLOLOLOL

Hlendril gets blasted by a bolt!

How would you react if you were a judge, I'm assuming in a courtroom, and some drunk asshole showed up and called you a fat kobold, and how was this judge's reaction not IC?

So basically everyone must accept your roleplay and the consequences therein, but any repercussions from other character's or NPC's must be deemed acceptable by you.

Not really. Deckits being fined for trying to bribe the jury makes sense, but having an unruly mob hang him outside the law was probably just Kenstrom messing around. When Hapenlok got tarred and feathered, all he did was Immolate himself for a laugh.

When Stonmel took time at the mayoral debate to accuse Renpaw of neglect for not investigating Leafi, Renpaw arrested him. When Hlendril mocked the Judge, he arrested him. When Hlendril kept talking over Town Councilwoman Alendrial's discussion after she asked him to respect the gathering, she arrested him.

All of these things are in character and necessary so the authorities have some authority.

He started involving me after like two months. (Since starting to show up to the stories, not just two months of being Leafi in the game.) It wasn't that long for you!

Also, after he started involving me, here's what happened: I got shot by a sniper, cursed by the witch Raznel, mistook the curse for some weird Jellybeard tattoo (he's a merchant) and ran off to the pavilion to get it erased and then came back and got cursed in an uglier way than before, kidnapped by acolytes, kidnapped by Raznel, and then when it came time to remove the curse, the cure made my face ripple and bubble in a horrifying mess while a room of a few dozen people stared.

All of that is 1) harsher than anything that's happened to Hlendril and 2) awesome and fun and meant to be taken that way.

Also, just to clarify, I was never specifically trying to get noticed. Some others would disagree and I understand how they could perceive it that way, but at the start I was only showing up for RPAs and figured I should at least pay attention and say a few things here and there. It was an "if I'm here anyway then I might as well not be a zombie" kind of thing, and that spiraled into following the logic of the story and the other characters.

To this day I suspect (and this is 100% speculation, so do not take this as fact) that the reason Kenstrom had Leafi get kidnapped for a solo scene was because he wanted to involve her since he kept seeing her show up to event after event after event, but the things she'd say were generic enough that he had no idea what kind of character she was and so didn't know how to properly work with her. So he had to put her in a dramatic situation that would show some reaction. (Again, others might disagree. I've told this to a couple friends who see things differently and say I was RPing well from the moment they met me, but I sure don't remember it that way. :P)


You're the opposite, where you're incredibly upfront about what kind of character Hlendril is. And that's where I think LadyGrey is right, in the post just below this, that you're maybe expecting too much. Since you already know what character you want to be, it seems like you're wanting immediate gratification.

And it's not really such a bad thing to step up and try to take the spotlight, but the problem is when someone tries to do it at every event. I'd suggest watching whichever characters you think are the best established and you'll probably find that almost all of them are rarely very chatty unless A) other PCs are talking to them first, or B) the situation is tailor-made for them, e.g. Shinann/Raelee/Irar will be a lot more talkative than normal when in contact with the militia/Hall/Church respectively.

Basically, pick your spots.
