Thread: Uncommon Rune teaching

    Hey everyone,

    So, I was trying to teach an uncommon rune to a fellow sorcerer, and received the message:

    "You do not feel confident enough in your knowledge of the lorae'tyr-abyran rune to try and teach anyone."

    Is this a matter of skill level? Something that I have to perform or create prior to teaching? Or is it a case where this rune just can't be taught?

    I believe I won the knowledge of this rune years ago in an auction, but I really can't be sure. If it was taught to me, would I be able to teach it to another?

    Thanks very much for any help that can be provided.

    This is what the wiki says about uncommon runes.

    Some may be taught indefinitely, others only once or twice, and some cannot be taught by players at all.

    if it was that far back perhaps you already have taught the limit. or it's one that cant be taught.

    Type "rune uncommon" to get a list of uncommon runes that you are able to draw on a runestone. Type "rune teach" to see which of them, if any, you can teach. To gain the ability to teach an uncommon rune, you must win a raffle of otherwise acquire it at a merchant event. Even then, you will usually have the ability to teach it only one to three times, and sometimes zero times.

    Knowledge of uncommon runes (by which I mean the ability to draw an uncommon rune on a runestone) is not nearly as valuable today as it was when the the minor summoning spell was initially released. Prior to HSN 2015, the only way to summon a particular type of demon was to use a drawn rune or to get lucky through random summoning attempts. During HSN 2015, the minor summoning spell was changed to give everybody a chance, based on skill, to summon a particular type of demon without the use of a runestone. Drawn runes are still useful because they greatly increase the chance of success.

    The way I read this reply is that teaching and/or learning uncommon runes isn’t something you *have* to do, but is optional. Is that a fair summary? Is this information (teaching/learning uncommon runes) now passed around more as an RP tool/opportunity than a necessity?

    I think I did understand that knowing the uncommon rune(s) increases the chance of summoning that particular demon associated with that particular rune successfully, but it isn’t absolutely necessary in order to simply attempt, right?

    Right. Having a runestone for a specific valence, archetype or demon just makes the summoning more likely to succeed.

    If you prep 725 and then type "summon" by itself, you'll get a list of every word you can use with the "summon" verb. That list is pasted below. I added the parentheses at the end of each word to match the table on the wiki page for spell 725. (As an aside, the word "archetype" has not always been used consistently. If you read GM posts from HSN 2015, you'll see some of them, contrary to the wiki but consistent with what I believe was the original intent, using "archetype" to refer to the general category, such as lorae'tyr-abyran, and the word "demon" to refer to a specific type, such as lorae'tyr-abyran'sa. That inconsistency sent me to my dictionary where I learned, to my dismay, that "archetype" can mean a specific example of something, or it can mean a general category from which specific examples can be drawn. In other words, it means two opposite things, so use it however you want.)

    Some examples of when you might want a specific demon:
    • If you are learning the illusions skill in the guild, then you need an igaesha demon to practice during the early demon illusion ranks.
    • Grik and Grantris are good are carrying coins.
    • Imps, IMO, are best when hunting with Balefire.
    • When I hunted in OTF, I always had an imp to prevent something there from casting sanctuary.
    • A few years ago at Ebon Gate, equipment was sold to capture igaesha demons to be used in divination. I haven't heard about anybody doing it in years. See https://gswiki.play.net/Igaeshian_Reader_Divining_Vial


    Another possible problem with the wiki is that it says summoning chambers add 25 to the chance of success. I believe the bonus was changed to 30 for all Sorcerer guild summoning chambers. The few summoning chambers outside guild halls may have better (for private chambers) or worse (for public chambers) bonuses.

    Think I have about 80 ranks of demonology and use "summon lorae" daily (bc I like verlok and get them pretty often that way). I don't use a chamber or runestone and have failed both minor and catastrophic very few times.
