Never before in history has a major national political party in the US nominated a presidential candidate as old as the candidate nominated today by the Republican Party. Last stand of the Baby Boomers.

Born near the beginning of the Baby Boomer era, Trump is nearly, if not, the Oldest Boomer. Does the most elite and Oldest Boomer share the characteristics of younger members of his generation? Is he mostly concerned about himself? We'll see as the Republican Convention progresses by noting its focus.

At the risk of feeding their narcissism, I believe it's time someone stated the simple truth: The Baby Boomers are the most self-centered, self-seeking, self-interested, self-absorbed, self-indulgent, self-aggrandizing generation in American history.

Of course, it is as unfair to demonize an entire generation as it is to characterize an entire gender or race or religion. And I don't literally mean that everyone born between 1946 and 1964 is a selfish pig. But generations can have a unique character that defines them, especially the elites of a generation—those lucky few who are blessed with the money or brains or looks or skills or education that typifies an era.

At nearly every critical juncture, they have preferred the present to the future; they've put themselves ahead of their parents, ahead of their country, ahead of their children—ahead of our future.

At the end of July, Senate candidate J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) introduced the newest Republican talking point, accusing Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), Vice President Kamala Harris and Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg of being “childless cat ladies.”

Since then, the same criticism has been made against many female or LGBTQ critics of former President Trump and his allies. This rhetoric is not just a catchy campaign phrase but rather the latest attempt in a long fight to define who counts as a real American or who is permitted to serve in high office.

Harris has two children. Buttigieg has children, though I'm not sure if he did in 2021. I have no idea about Ocasio-Cortez. If Vance had been correct about their childlessness, would and should it have mattered?

Since the ink dried on the Constitution in 1787, Americans have contested and debated who counts as a citizen.

During the first half of the 19th century, suffrage expanded to include all white men, regardless of their propertied status, but still excluded women and men of color. While there were growing voices calling for the end of slavery, those activists didn’t necessarily have the same concerns about citizenship. Even many abolitionists and ardent opponents of slavery remained convinced that Black Americans could not become equal citizens and supported colonization projects that would ship the newly-emancipated somewhere else.

Several decades later, advocates for women’s suffrage faced similar pushback to their demands for full citizenship.
