The attempt on Reagan's life was not shortly before an election. An assassination attempt three years before does not have the same weight in the minds of voters. And I thought it was interesting that both Roosevelt and Trump were former presidents running for election for a non-consecutive term.
On the other hand, there was no teevee in Roosevelt's time. For both Reagan and Trump, voters were able to see at least the aftermath of the event.
