Yes, I wish someone had just done that and this guy would just be hung the fuck over right now and not dead.

I also wish he had the sense to know that if you know you are drunk, and the cops get you, you shut up, do what they say, go to jail and then fight it down to a reckless driving in court. It's really the lack of faith in the system and the little opportunity to get the fair chance to be heard that leads to these escalations. Putting your life on the line and committing multiple felonies to escape a misdemeanor DUI and at worst the weekend in jail seems utterly senseless, drunk or sober.

I don't want to call you a liar but we all know you don't have buddies.

Best version still around on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1eGj4YRwv_U

The guy was passed out drunk in a running car half-parked in the Wendy's drive thru. They performed a field sobriety test and breathalyzer which came back over .10. Tried to place him under arrest, and when putting cuffs on him he started to fight back.

The guy was then beating the hell out of the two cops, stole one's taser, but made the fatal mistake of turning back and pointing it at them, then fired it while running away. That's when he was shot, it's all on video. If he hadn't turned, raised the taser at them, and fired it, I'm certain they wouldn't have fired. This one will be justified and the city of Atlanta will be out a good chunk of cash in a wrongful termination lawsuit, I'd think. With the current climate, however, who knows.

Why the Wendy's had to be torched though, I mean, come on, man. Maybe they called the cops there in the first place?
So, he fired the taser and didn't hit anyone, making him... unarmed. Not to mention the white SUV that's downrange directly behind the fleeing suspect. These guys should never have been carrying badges and guns, they took a bad situation and escalated it into life and death.

From a distance it's ugly and tragic, agreed. If you check the video though, it appears the taser being fired and the cop discharging his firearm occur in the same second.

Yeah agree with Furry... don't run for a DUI, no clue what he hoped to gain there. If they have you, they have you. Just do your time and live another day.

But firing 3 shots in a crowded parking lot at someone with a taser in the back? Come on. Ever heard of a leg shot? Or even... one shot? This is where better training is needed. Our cops are not as prepared as they think they are for their jobs. Most never have to pull their guns, thankfully, but when they do, it's a crap shoot on whether or not they are going to do it right. Human emotion, adrenaline, all of it makes the situation unpredictable.

Both sides were wrong, but the dude didn't deserve to die. I think it was unnecessary force personally.

He had a deadly weapon (a taser is a deadly weapon in the hands of someone not trained to use one, that's why officers are trained to use one) and was getting ready to fire it, him being shot in the back means nothing in this situation.

You don't shoot the leg, this isn't a cop movie, just like you don't shot the gun out of their hands like this is some sort of Western movie. Typically people who suggest this have never even fired a gun in their life much less fired a gun in a dangerous situation.

Also 3 shots isn't that many really. People don't realize how incredibly difficult it is to shoot a moving target.

Now that all of the nonsensical options are out of the way, what do you people think the officers should have done?

They tried calmly arrested him and he not only resisted but was punching them in the face and stole one of their weapons.

They tried to tase him but that didn't work.

They tried to chase him down to tackle him but he was going to use the taser on them.

It's like you guys expect officers to just roll over and risk serious injury or death to themselves in the name of social justice or something.

OK, for those that obviously have no fucking clue about firearms discharge against other people. First, leg shots are harder than center mass. Second, there is absolutely no legal discharge of a firearm against another human that is not considered deadly force. Let me say it again, if you shoot at another person, it is deadly force, period. People die from leg shots, arm shots, being shot in the gun and every other possible way to get shot, someone has died from it.

The cop was not wrong. He was having deadly force applied against him (taser) and he returned fire. If you shoot at someone, it doesn't matter what your body position is, you are fair game to be shot. Period. This kind of mush headed thinking is a huge part of what is wrong with people and the world today.

Had the cop been hit and immobilized, then he could have been beaten to death, had his weapon stolen and then shot and on and on. The law is clear, the guy was at that point a felon and the cop did the right thing. OH, and just because someone is unarmed does keep them from being a deadly threat. In fact, hands, fists and blunt trauma kill more people in the US every year than are killed by rifles of any kind.

I'll concede those are valid points by both Rocktar and Tg0 on this, thanks for pointing those out. It was a bad situation and the dude really shouldn't have taken the taser or tried to run. I have fired plenty of firearms in my life, at targets and animals but never at people. Except paintball guns.

I feel bad for the cops here, agree that there's a fine line to walk and it's going to be tough, incredibly politicized, and not something I'd want to do. And I doubt those cops wanted to shoot that guy as I would agree they tried other alternatives available to them. Very different situation from Floyd without a doubt.

Same reason I wouldn't want to be a teacher... too much liability in that shit. Going to end up where no one wants to be a cop or teacher anymore, then we're kind of fucked as a society.
