Trump's lawyers are trying to avoid having him being interviewed in person by Mueller's special counsel. This may be the smartest thing they do in this case.

They can't let him be interviewed. He's incapable of avoiding perjury. If they get him talking he'll hang himself for sure. It's shitty but they'll get it set up so that he can answer in writing then they will write his answers for him. He'll still attempt to sabotage it by tweeting but they should be able to protect him.
