There's actually a rumour/conspiracy theory saying he joined to minimize damage to the nation as a whole (aka attack hard/fast with a regular army and conclude the war swiftly with the South's honor intact, hopefully). There were no allusions that the South lost before the first bullet was fired and he had intimate knowledge of what the US Army was capable of (having graduated from West Point and serving with most of it's officer corps).

In many ways, if I had to take a wild guess into the mind of Bobby Lee when he was contemplating doing the unthinkable in his Virginia mansion on that night in 1862; I think he was trying to pull a Jesus and sacrifice himself so that the bodycount stayed under a million. Or maybe I'm giving the man too much credit.

I don't envy the cops. Tough job. On one hand if they get involved it's OMG fascists restricting freedom. If they don't they get blamed for a bunch of knuckleheads causing trouble. They can't be everywhere at once the instant something happens. They would not have been able to predict or foresee that white supremacist plow his car into peaceful protesters and if they did what would they have been able to do to stop him? Hindsight is 20/20.

They would have kept the two groups apart like they typically do at protests that have counter protestors. At least when they're not ordered to stand down by mayors with political agendas.

It doesn't take hindsight to know what could happen with 2 opposing groups who are there for a fight.

If a mayor orders cops to stand down from a situation that they know beforehand is happening that is extremely likely to get violent without them there, how is he not at least partially responsible?

I'm not saying that's what happened here, though I wouldn't be at all surprised if that ends up being the case unless they're just really that dumb and incompetent, but it's happened at other recent protests/riots, has it not?

At its core the entire situation is the fault of people who were violent on both sides. All of it could have also been easily prevented by putting a buffer between violent retard team 1 and violent retard team 2.
