So you are saying that Nintendo created an artificial shortage to drive up secondary reselling prices and that they were the secondary resellers and took advantage of that fact?
Because the alternative is "Nintendo had a cash cow and stopped making units because... they dont like money??"

Is this sarcasm? It's so hard to tell sometimes.

    100%

Nintendo either had a license to print money from nostalgia with the NES classic and just stopped for no apparent good reason or they fucked up on the manufacturing costs and weren't turning a profit per unit created. Creating artificial scarcity only helps you if you later benefit from that scarcity by increasing the price on the replacement of the first or ramping up production to meet the demand later on, while still keeping that feverish demand for the product. Just not producing any more doesn't make the company any money and leaves people pissed off that they can't get the product.

No, they don't give a fuck about the secondary market, they do know we love instant gratification and the feeling of exclusivity. Every game company does this with EVERY console since forever. Release small amounts so the hype stays up, they get sold out quick, then release another small batch and continue. People are stupid when they think there might not be anymore, so they go and buy when they may not have ever bought one at all. Nintendo doesn't care if you're buying 5 for yourself or to resale, they just know they sold 5 units. This is a marketing tactic that is proven time and time again.

Watch, they'll start this shit up again after the cut the SNES Classic. Nintendo knows exactly what they are doing.

Looks like you're pretty much right.

They're going to make more units than the NES Classic, but they are still finite. Meaning if enough are hoarded for resale, they'll still be hard to get at a reasonable price.

FOMO (scarcity) is a very powerful marketing tactic. Not really sure what the driving force to buying these are though. Anyone serious enough to play older games can just use an emulator or buy the games in one of the many Nintendo handhelds/consoles through their store.

SEGA Forever is doing it right.

Because people like lumps of plastic to sit in their homes.

I'm sure the one that's been sitting in my various garages and attics for the past 20 years still works.

I've seen plenty of cases where artificial scarcity is used to drum up interest (Every black friday sale, ever, most apple products, diamonds, etc.) What you don't see much is a scarcity that isn't exploited fully (Nintendo cutting off without making more with obvious demand).

I'm wondering if the reason is something stupid... like retooling the factory too soon and it would have been significantly more expensive to make more of them.

I think it's for people like me who loved these games, aren't planning to buy a Switch (my last system is a Wii), and aren't willing to monkey around with an emulator. I suspect that's a lot of people.

Shocked that Chrono Trigger isn't on the list though. Easily one of the best RPGs I've ever played. (hooray for Earthbound though - was irritated it was never released for Wii)
