They probably could have mentioned the gators on the signs in addition to no swimming/deep water, though their prevalence seems a reasonable thing for an adult to know about Florida.
Like I said, I think it's pretty reasonable for them to know about Florida and its alligators. They made a very idiotic mistake and will indeed have to live with it for the rest of their lives. Wishing that kind of pain on someone seems particularly cruel in its own right to me, however.
It depends on exactly where the child went in and where the family was, but where Disney may run in to a bit of liability is that it appears from an article and pictures is that it was a sandy "beach type" (my words) area that led directly up to the lagoon. Just because a zoo puts a bench in an area with tigers that isn't closed off to the public and puts a sign that says don't sit here does not absolve said zoo of any responsibility. Know what'm sayin.
Disney will offer a generous compensation, they're not going to fight this in court. Whether the family accepts that or decides now is their time to go double or nothing remains to be seen.
