Sharp to sell world's first 8K TV in October, for about $125,000

I can't even imagine how they would even get content out for that thing. They are just now ready to roll out blue-ray disks capable of 4k. There's no way they'll be able to fit 4 times the data on 1 disk. This isn't even mentioning streaming 8k content, or downloading it with any regularity.

Like the article says consumer versions won't be out until 2018.

Yeah, you caught me before I edited my post as the article states it's for commercial use, but the problems remain as the article states. Cameras can't even film in 8K HD, let alone have the means to get that content into the hands of the consumer.

Am I the odd one here that just watches TV/movies for, y'know, the story and whatnot?

I can't recall a single time sitting there thinking "Gosh, I bet this would look so cool in high-definition, or even SUPER hi-vision!"

I would much rather watch an action or Sci-fi movie on blue-ray as opposed to standard definition. It isn't that the movie is terrible if it isn't in high definition, but if it can be better, then why shouldn't it?

People typically have some aspect of life they spend more money order to have a higher quality product than is needed. For some its an expensive car, or clothes, etc. For others, it's electronics.

I don't begrudge people having their expensive TVs, I just mean how much better can it get though? :/

The next logical step to me seems like true 3D. Let's stop working on higher definitions and get this shit rolling out already!

This is actually a proven fact. Further increases of resolution have pretty extreme edge cases in order to have observable improvement. You either need to have a gigantic screen or be VERY close to it. So i'm with you there.

    This is the breakdown: http://img28.imageshack.us/img28/629/200ppdengleski.png

That being said, 8k resolutions and beyond are extremely important to VR. Even in the best headsets today, your eyes are so close to the screen that things still look pixelated. It will take 8x per eye resolutions in order for it to be indistinguishable from real life.

I'd appreciate less push-back on hi def tv's, please. Not sure why you feel the need to trash tv in such a caustic manner. While your 3D suggestion is good, I'm afraid we can't have you discouraging the hard work that the hi-def folks are doing in such an ungrateful fashion. As such, I'm banning you for 30 days so that you can think about what you've done. You're welcome.

    That's a pretty interesting chart.

So am I reading it right, there is no difference between a 720p and a 4320p if I have a 10 inch TV and am watching it from 10 feet away?
