Some of the NFL’s most legendary, respected names are differing over whether to use the Washington Redskins name in television broadcasts this season
CBS’s Phil Simms and NBC’s Tony Dungy, who each spent more than a decade in the league as either players or coaches, recently said they will likely refrain from using “Redskins” moving forward.
More...If a team name is causing an opinion split among NFL's famous people, then it's time to change the name. But ESPN commentator Mike Ditka blasted critics and told them to “leave [the issue] alone.”
“This is so stupid it’s appalling, and I hope that owner keeps fighting for it and never changes it, because the Redskins are part of an American football history, and it should never be anything but the Washington Redskins,” he told the website redskinshistorian.com.
Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder has spent much of his offseason defending his team's controversial nickname and claiming it will never change. One thing Snyder is willing to change, however? His stadium—and possibly its location as well.
Snyder sat down with CSN Washington on Wednesday and unveiled the Redskins are in the planning stages for building a new stadium.
More...The team's name will affect taxpayer subsidies and corporate sponsorships for a new stadium. Most current NFL stadiums have corporate names, and most are built with taxpayer subsidies. The CEO of FedEx is already spending time defending his company's name on the current stadium, saying that the stadium is not just about hosting football games and FedEx is involved for those other events, and besides it's part of an old long-term contract. What corporation or elected official needs the headache of having to answer that question over and over?Snyder indicated D.C., Maryland and Virginia are all potential locations.
Is there anybody in this forum who still disagrees with me that the team would be better off if it changed its name? And that the team will change its name soon?
I don't recall anything else ever happening at FedEx field beyond potato games.
PB: One day you'll need this number: 988.
A new poll shows that since 1992, the number of Americans who think the "Redskins" should change their name has increased by a humongous 288%.
Seven in 10 Americans are in favor of the Washington NFL club keeping "Redskins" as its team name, according to a poll conducted for ESPN's Outside the Lines, which has a special on the name controversy tonight at 8 ET on ESPN2.
A poll conducted by Langer Research for tonight's special found 71% of respondents favor keeping the name and 23% think it should be changed, up from 8% who favored change in 1992. The poll of 1,019 Americans was conducted by phone last month.

Yawn...is this thread still going?
The Washington Redskins are not going to change their name. Deal with it, move on. Thank you.
Entertainingly enough, the U.S. Patent Office totally denied the Redskins. They DID, in fact, try to change their logo to a redskin potato. THAT, all in itself, shows that this is not really about racism, for the owner at least, as the owner knows everyone's just being a dildo, and tried to have some fun with the situation. I am now trying to find a black market Redskins t-shirt with the potato logo. I will wear it proudly if I find one.
