I don't know any of them but I'd assume that gay marriage would have really challenged their Democrat credentials.

Last time they supported a non Phelps candidate was Al Jr. in 1988. Fred Phelps last ran as a Democrat in 1998.

Nah. They actually have a rather extensive pro civil rights record for black people. It used to be a way they could stir up Southerners. They only got really into hating gay people and the military later on. They actually got permission from Saddam Hussein to preach against America and Hillary Clinton during the Clinton Administration.

They're terrifying and baffling folks. I've stood on the opposite side of a picket from them. The best way to deal with them was to ignore them (they thrive on slapping lawsuits on people) and have a louder message.
