I wouldn't know because its never been accurately measured that I know about. My point is that neither would you.

We must not confuse dissent with disloyalty. We must remember always that accusation is not proof and that conviction depends upon evidence and due process of law. We will not walk in fear, one of another. We will not be driven by fear into an age of unreason, if we dig deep in our history and our doctrine, and remember that we are not descended from fearful men. Edward R. Murrow

Or maybe people feel more comfortable or are more honest with themselves about this sort of thing.

If a survey was done in the US that found 15% of people were gay and a survey done in a deeply religious country like Iran found 5% of the people were gay would that prove Americans are inherently better interior designers?

It wasn't even worth mocking. It was clearly in the "hush, the grownups are talking" category. It relied on a pretty blatant strawman (strawkid?)

Oh okay. Well as long as there was a good reason for it.

    How many atheists are there?
It depends on your definition of the term. Only between 1.5 and 4 percent of Americans admit to so-called "hard atheism," the conviction that no higher power exists. But a much larger share of the American public (19 percent) spurns organized religion in favor of a nondefined skepticism about faith. This group, sometimes collectively labeled the "Nones," is growing faster than any religious faith in the U.S. About two thirds of Nones say they are former believers; 24 percent are lapsed Catholics and 29 percent once identified with other Christian denominations. David Silverman, president of American Atheists, claims these Nones as members of his tribe. "If you don't have a belief in God, you're an atheist," he said. "It doesn't matter what you call yourself."

I'd say that eventually the idea of being gay, bi or straight will no longer have meaning as people have more freedom to just BE. Same with religion. It may come to pass that homo sapiens don't exist long enough for the timeline to play out but we already see that in places where the people feel very secure they are turning away from faith. Conversely in areas of extreme poverty and low standard of living they are more religious. If this theory holds true then belief in a higher power will be dictated circumstance which doesn't bode well for anyone who argues that God exists.

The question of why economically developed countries turn to atheism has been batted around by anthropologists for about eighty years. Anthropologist James Fraser proposed that scientific prediction and control of nature supplants religion as a means of controlling uncertainty in our lives. This hunch is supported by data showing that the more educated countries have higher levels of non belief and there are strong correlations between atheism and intelligence (see my earlier post on this).

It seems that people turn to religion as a salve for the difficulties and uncertainties of their lives. In social democracies, there is less fear and uncertainty about the future because social welfare programs provide a safety net and better health care means that fewer people can expect to die young. People who are less vulnerable to the hostile forces of nature feel more in control of their lives and less in need of religion.

    A) This is the PC and I take very little I read here seriously

    and

    B) To equate believing god exists with believing Italy or Osama bin Laden exists (existed) is absolutely ridiculous. While I don't think you're stupid, I think that making that comparison should mean you automatically lose any debate on religion right then and there.

Someone should start a separate thread. It could be titled, "things that must be true because cwoolf believes/wishes they are true"

Why it is ridiculous? Because you say so?

Less than .001% of the entire human population (since the beginning of man) have ever claimed to have seen either one.

People have killed in both of their names without meeting either one of them.

People carried out both of what they claim was their will again without ever meeting either one of them.

Both have been vilified and looked upon as a savior/hero by people who have never met either of them.

But yet here you are willing to accept Osama bin Laden is real even though you never met the man but you think other people are stupid for believing in God because they never met him.

But it is easier to just say something is stupid when you disagree with it.
