A pit bull was in fact bred to be an aggressive fighting type dog. That is not to say they can't be great pets or live a life without a hostile incident, but certain precautions should be taken.
I have a doberman. It is the sweetest dog you will ever meet, but he does have natural guard dog instincts. Guests need to be properly introduced. As long as that happens, he is fine. If I failed to take that step, he could possibly bite someone's nuts off. That would in fact be my fault, as the dog was only doing his job.
In summary, people need to research the common temperament of breeds and be aware of those as part of responsible pet ownership.
