Delias has a good idea there. It would suck in the winter but it's not impossible. Especially if your distant trips are 15-20min. The DUI guys that lost their license make it work.

College towns generally have a pretty decent bus system, because so many people use it. There's probably one going from a grocery store (not necessarily the one you use now, but does that matter?) to somewhere pretty close to your house. Worst case scenario, you make once-a-month cab trips for stuff like kitty litter that's heavy and bulky, but can be stored for a while before use.

The internship could be a problem though. No one to carpool with (aka, get rides and give some gas money to)?

How am I supposed to come home on Holidays on a fucking vespa? or move into my apartment? or bring my cats home for winter break? I'm not making someone in my family drive 5 hours round trip twice.

Really? You're reduced to the argument that you have to spend $5k on a car and short yourself $3k tuition money, so that you can drive home on holidays? For the 4-5 times a year you need that, rent a car. It's $35 a day if you don't bother looking around for deals - significantly cheaper if you take the time to get a good price.

Doesn't compute. Every 96 we got and I wasn't on duty I drove 1200 to see the girlfriend. Now it's not unusual for me to do a Michigan and back trip to go let the boys ride 4wheelers or go shooting, that's 6hrs and often.

I would discuss it with your folks first before writing it off as a viable option to be able to complete the important tasks at hand - some comfort and not cripple your finances.

Slight discomfort now saves you huge pain later.

My dad will only purchase a Honda, a Hyundai, a Dodge, a Kia or a Jeep.

We've called almost every dealership in the area and none of them have cars around 5k, which is all I can spend, and then I'm still 3k short for my school tuition. We've also looked through every auto-trader ad within 50 miles.

I want to drive into a tree or something and just have my insurance buy me a new car, even though that isn't how it works at all :|

That seems like a weird collection of brands. I found a brand new Audi Q5 for $1! lol @ autotrader. No but seriously, I found a barely suspicious at all 1997 Lincoln with 68k miles for $3k right down the street. Give him the sad puppy eyes!

No, I wouldn't be spending 5k on a car. The car would be listed at 5k which means I'd spend $3,800 on it, but I'd like to find a car for 4k if I can. My tuition is taken care of already by loans, its my apartment that I'd be short on--but I'll make enough during the year to cover it. I just have NOTHING in my savings account after this.

Regardless, not having a car is not an option. I was already going to work 2 jobs and an internship next year, so I'll be fine - It's just the fact that I have to drain my savings account now, because the mechanics who "fixed" my transmission on Friday for $500 now need to "fix" it again for another $2,500

My dad doesn't have money to give me. This is all money that I have earned or was given to my from my survivors benefits. I don't ask my family for ANYTHING. Thanks. I buy all my own food, even when I'm home, I buy all my own clothes, I've stopped using my gas card all together and only keep it on me for emergencies. The only thing my dad pays for is my phone bill which I offer every month to help pay for.

Because my mom died when I was 11 years old and I got money from the government until I was 18, I also didn't have a checking account until I was 18 so every paycheck I received from 15 to 18 went directly into a savings account which I can't withdraw from to this day.
