It is completely normal for mothers to be overbearing with their adul children. Nevertheless, I certainly understand your frustration and standing your ground. Hope everything works out.

Your mother sounds exactly like mine, except mine harasses my doctor to find out what my blood sugar and cholesterol are until they break down and give it to her. It's like she can't believe my levels are normal (both diabetes and hbp run in the family).

Do most mothers actually do this? If so, I think I'm going to have to migrate to the "things that blew your mind" folder. My mom is obviously concerned about my welfare and likes me to keep her updated about anything out of the ordinary, but I don't think she even knows where my doctor's office is. She has encouraged me to be independent since I first learned how to put my own socks on (not that it took much encouraging - I've always been the "I can do it myself, Mommy" type). If I need help with something she'd go to hell and back without a second thought, but if I don't involve her in it, my business is my business.

If you cancelled the apt because it fell on Friday the 13th then I sort of don't blame your mom, because that's a little silly. But any other reason yeah, she needs to back off.

I had an appointment with a doctor in a couple of days. My mother was going to fly down from NJ to attend with me for some reason. Whatever. I cancelled the appointment because a certain factor made me uncomfortable about having the appointment on that day. I would reschedule it for later this month when the certain factor was gone. I told my mother this so that she could cancel her flight and do that thing where they don't give you a refund, just the choice of what other date to use the tickets on so she could attend the doctor's visit in a couple of weeks like she wanted.

Oh no. No. Instead of respecting my opinions and actions as a free, thinking, sovereign adult, she called the doctor's office, reinstated the appointment and informed me through text message that the appointment was back on and she'd be arriving as scheduled. What. The. Fuck. I am fucking livid. I am a goddamn 31-year-old woman, for fuck's sake, and that shit is entirely unacceptable to me.

I left her an angry voicemail basically accusing her of thoughtless tyranny and turned my phone off. I wash my hands of it. If she turns up in town and goes to that appointment, it will be without me. It is her own goddamn problem.

It's really less of a frown and more of a gape at the sheer gall.

My mother doesn't always do this, thankfully. Mostly because she doesn't have the opportunity, being in another state. But she does it every once in a while and always seems shocked when I react badly to it. See, my mother raised me to be independent as well and I took to it in the "I'll do it myself" way too. But unlike your mother, Lia, my mother is not as happy with the result as she thought she would be. As a kid, whenever I had a loudly expressed opinion that was different from hers, she'd just tell me it was a phase (god, I grew to hate that word) and that when I got older, somehow I would magically agree with her.

Yeah, she wanted me to be independent and self-motivated but she seemed to assume that I would naturally turn out EXACTLY like her eventually. Even after repeatedly showing her that this is not the case, she still just assumes and acts surprised every goddamn time I react differently. It boggles my mind that an intelligent woman, a high-powered VP lawyer for an international media company, would have such trouble grasping this simple concept. I know she's not stupid but she is fucking blind.

Fortunately, BECAUSE I was raised that way, I have absolutely no problem telling her to fuck off. Having the need to tell her to fuck off is what makes me frown. Surely after thirty years of knowing someone, you'd actually KNOW them.

ETA: Oh, and she doesn't usually know who my doctors are. This was a special case because of my recent health issues. The doctor is a specialist helping me with those. My mother and my boyfriend's parents (who live in the same town as us) know who she is just in case of complications.
