Washington Redskins will NEVER change name

(Reuters) - The online magazine Slate.com and two other publications have said they will no longer refer to the National Football League's Washington, D.C., football team as the "Redskins," a name Native Americans have condemned as offensive.

The Washington franchise has long declined to change its name in spite of criticism from Native Americans and others. A group of Native Americans has gone to court to void the federal trademark protections of the team's name.

What will they call them now? Will other publications follow suit? And will the media pressure cause a name change? The owner of the team had an answer to that last question..

Representatives for the team declined to comment about the decisions by Slate and the other media organizations, but team owner Daniel Snyder recently told the newspaper USA Today, "We'll never change the name. It's that simple. Never. You can use all caps."

I don't know if anyone has brought this up in the 9 other discussions we've had about this, but in the very same town a team changed a criticized name (Bullets). It's not that implausible that this team would go the same route, owner blather notwithstanding.

Eh, they generally squander their money on stuff (look at most of the living conditions on the reservations) and most of the money is distributed to tribe members. If the owner doesn't want to change the name, I doubt he'll do it. I don't expect it to harm ticket or product sales for the brand either. It never has in the past.

generally speaking the tribes that own casinos arent tribes on reservations, the tribes generally dont share money with each other which is why theres squallor on many reservations even today, and tak foxwoods in Connecticut for example, theres something under 200 tribe members, I'd bet Mohegan Sun there is the same. they are not what you'd call poor at this point. I could care less about the name, not being native american, but the word redskin is on the same level as the N word to almost every sane person in the country, reading the teams comments about the issue are usually insulting at best to the people making the complaints and to native americans

Oh, I know the tribes don't share with other tribes not in their nation, but a lot of them have Reservations. Especially the ones in Oklahoma and such (which is closer to where I live)

I definitely wouldn't put redskin on the same level is the N word though. One of those two words definitely has a lot more... Power.

I wasnt implying political and media implications, I was talking on a level of insults, call a person of those cultures those things the reaction is going to be the same, except some african americans seem to enjoy calling each other theirs heh.
