My internship is 20 minutes away in the middle of the woods, there aren't any buses that go over there and walking it would be ridiculous, especially in winter. If I didn't have the internship, I could do without a car but it is impossible.

I also have two cats, and being a trex means I can't carry the bags of litter and food from the store to my apartment (which is 10 minutes off campus). Grocery shopping in general would be a huge pain in the ass, even though it would be possible.

Also trying to have two jobs next year, one is on campus, the other is probably going to be across the highway 15 minutes.

I'm not going to tell you to have a different mode of transport, with a hectic schedule you need a car. Have you checked craigslist? carmax? rental car company sales? If you're so limited in money, then you need to look at non-dealer sources

In 1998 a friend of mine bought me a beater car for 100 dollars for my birthday. It was totally ugly, stick shift that I had to learn to drive, only had AM radio, and... the thing never gave me a single problem for the two years I drove it while I saved for a nice car. Two years of driving it a half hour on the freeway to campus and back every weekday. Then once I got it, the nice car's transmission went out on me within a month of buying it and after that seemed to have a problem every time I got in the damn thing, meanwhile I gave my beater car to my grandparents and they continued driving it for several more years. So, maybe ugly stupid car isn't super glamorous but will end up being all good!

I haven't, but my dad won't let me buy from any private owners. I have no problem with the car being hideously ugly. I just want to be able to drive in it comfortably and not be fucked on gas. I get 32 MPG right now, and I'd like to stay above 30. My dad wouldn't let me even go look at the car I wanted to which got 35mpg because it was a chevy or a ford. (I forget which)

My dad doesn't have money to give me. This is all money that I have earned or was given to my from my survivors benefits. I don't ask my family for ANYTHING. Thanks. I buy all my own food, even when I'm home, I buy all my own clothes, I've stopped using my gas card all together and only keep it on me for emergencies. The only thing my dad pays for is my phone bill which I offer every month to help pay for.

Then why do you care what your dad says about the make and model:

My dad will only purchase a Honda, a Hyundai, a Dodge, a Kia or a Jeep.

We've called almost every dealership in the area and none of them have cars around 5k, which is all I can spend, and then I'm still 3k short for my school tuition. We've also looked through every auto-trader ad within 50 miles.

I want to drive into a tree or something and just have my insurance buy me a new car, even though that isn't how it works at all :|
