US Army Staff Sergeant Robert Bales sentenced to life without parole
Staff Sergeant Robert Bales is the Army soldier who perpetrated the now named Khandahar Massacre on March 11, 2012. During the night, he went out and killed several civilians as they slept. The death toll was 16 killed, 6 wounded civilians. Due to a plea bargain, the death penalty was taken off the table. He was reduced to E1, dishonorably discharged, forfeited all pay and benefits, and will be placed in Leavenworth for the remainder of his life. His sentence can be knocked down to life with parole by the Commanding General of his unit. The families of the dead Afghans are upset with the sentencing, calling for the death penalty.
